October 31, 201312 yr I have theJ41, NGX and, 777 but I love the 747-400 in the RW. How does the VC quality and FPS stack up against the newer jets. I know the PMDG 747-400 is pretty old and had performance issues. Should I just wait till the 747V2 comes out? ATP MEL,CFI,CFII,MEI. Type Ratings B-737, ERJ-190,ERJ-170
October 31, 201312 yr It's probably gonna be more than 6 months before the v2 comes out, likely more. That's because it's a full rebuild of the entire 747-400. IF you're interested in flying the B747-400... I'd grab it now. Regards, Jeremy Chesney

October 31, 201312 yr Moderator Just wondering if anyone has made an HD upgrade for the cockpit textures? Yes, but it was pulled from the Avsim library since it violated the EULA. Jim Burke Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
October 31, 201312 yr Author Yes, but it was pulled from the Avsim library since it violated the EULA. Jim Burke That was dumb of PMDG to not allow the hd vc textures as they just lost a sale on the 747v1. Its not like having an HD v1 would have kept me from buying V2 ATP MEL,CFI,CFII,MEI. October 31, 201312 yr If I were you, I'd wait for V2. It's going to be even better than the 777 (Sounds impossible, I know). Thanks, Kevin L
October 31, 201312 yr If you're really aching to fly a 747, the 747-400X (v1) is the way to go. However, v2 shouldn't be that far off. Knowing PMDG, this could mean any time period starting tomorrow and ending... Well, only they have even the slightest idea. In the end, it really is a matter of priorities. I haven't bought the 747-400X myself either. There's still so much to do and learn in the NGX and 777 for me, that I probably won't even be ready with those two when the 747v2 is released. October 31, 201312 yr If you're texture-minded, maybe you should wait for v2.0. Otherwise the v1.0 is just fine (performance issues are related to hardware which has improved considerably since v1.0 release). For the HD textures, IIRC, they were not withdrawn because PMDG didn't allow, but because the author(?) hadn't asked before he uploaded them ... What happened to AVSIM
October 31, 201312 yr The PMDG 747-400X is dated but is still holds up well to the newest offerings.I don't know of anyone that runs their NGX at a 4096X2160 screen resolution. I run everything at the default native 1024X768 and its perfectly fine. I'll evaluate the v2 based on its features and systems improvements over the v1, not any visual improvements gained by higher textures. I'm also not a fan of the download only option. I want the bloody box if I'm shelling out 80+ dollars.I guess I'm just old fashioned LOL!
October 31, 201312 yr For the HD textures, IIRC, they were not withdrawn because PMDG didn't allow, but because the author(?) hadn't asked before he uploaded them ... The author did ask if he was allowed to distribute them. Ryan (Tabs) told him that he was not, as per the EULA. The author decided to blatantly ignore this, and released them anyway. I mean what does somone making better textures hurt? ATP MEL,CFI,CFII,MEI. Type Ratings B-737, ERJ-190,ERJ-170
October 31, 201312 yr I know you said you're a fan of the 747, but if you want to grow your PMDG collection you might want to consider the MD-11 instead of the 747X. In my opinion it's far superior to the 747X as a product. The 747X is the only PMDG add-on for FSX that feels very old to me now, and the only one I've permanently retired. Systems are great of course, but modelling and texturing is 2006 standard, as you'd expect (especially the overhead; a real weak area). The MD-11 is a different standard altogether. Not quite NGX but has a lot to offer and still reeks quality.
October 31, 201312 yr David: I have no idea as to why they decided he wasn't allowed to distribute them. However, the intellectual property is still theirs, not ours. We only buy a license to use the software, we don't own the software itself. So when they decide certain areas of their property may not be altered, it's simply their decision. They have every right to do so. We may not see it the same way, we may feel they're taking something away from us. I'm sure they have their reasons for doing so. I'm pretty sure the same decision would be made if someone decided to make an MD-11 update. For whatever reason, he or she would not be allowed to distribute it, even though the MD-11 is all but dead in the water. At least, that's my take on the matter. Name available upon request
October 31, 201312 yr The PMDG 747 V1 is the best aircraft in my fleet. Yes, the 777 has few system better and the VC of the 747 is a tad dated (Its actually not too bad) compared to the 777 or the 737 NGX. It also does not have Terrain feature. Which is nice in the new 777. The external graphics and textures are awesome.. and hand flying the 747 is a dream.. and It's totally bug free and stable matured product (I am pretty sure of this) Just yesterday I was flying the 747 instead of the 777. I don't think (Just my opinion) PMDG is going to release the 747 V2 in another 8 months at least. (Don't sue me if PMDG surprises us..Tsk tsk) So if you are a fan of the 747 get it today. When the 747 V2 comes out, it would be a cherry on top. And also check out the McPhat HD textures (payware) for the PMDG 747..if you are not running into OOMs, this would add value. If you are fighting OOM (Out of memory issues) avoid McPhat. I use them around areas where I don't have too many complex addon sceneries. I love their Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa HD textures for the 747. Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
