ORBX Global

This subject has previously generated an enormous amount of heat.  You are entitled to form your own opinion as are the rest of us and it seems to me the following are questions you might ask yourself.

1) Where do you fly?  As indicated above and elsewhere, this add-on gives the greatest benefit in areas NOT covered by existing add-ons such as GEX.  Do you fly all over the world or in selected regions?

2) Given your answer to 1), do you already own GEX for the areas you fly in?  If you do, then consider that FTX Global is quite an expensive product and you will only get any incremental benefit FTXG gives over GEX, not the full benefit of FTXG over the default FSX

3) Do you really want world wide coverage given the absence of mesh/landclass data for remote areas etc or would you be better buying FTXG regional products for the areas you do fly in?

Lastly, be aware that most of the previous discussion about this product revolved around the fact that when first released, it made significant changes to core FSX files that couldn't easily be reversed if you wanted to un-install it.  It was intended to provide an un-installer to resolve this issue.  I don't know whether that ever happened but make sure you do before you make a decision just in case you ever want it.

OpenLC will remedy this by completely rearranging all textures plús also adding more new textures.

I really hope this is the case but I'll believe it when I see it. :P

Your post gave me an idea. Has anybody tried installing GEX over top of FTX Global? I feel GEX NA textures are actually a little better than FTXG, at least in North America and when used with UTX. I'm wondering if I can slap GEX back on and treat FTXG as an improved 'default' world but with the benefit of it's night lighting and autogen improvements. Best of both worlds?

For serious IFR simmers out there: FTX Global lights look nice, however they remain visible during low-vis operations, ruining approaches to minimums.

Out of all non-Orbx stuff you've purchased, what would you recommend for a change of scenery out of those listed. What is your favorite non-Orbx scenery?

Hard to say really as I like them all and they are located different places around the world so they all serve their purpose. If I had to choose favorites I maybe would say Earth Simulations channel Islands and 29 Palms greek islands, but I also enjoy Aerosofts US Cities sceneries and also most of Aerosofts airports.... Hmmm, no, I can't pick any favorites, I like them all and it all depends on the mood where I fly ^_^

@Kaboki

Thank you for the info, I will give one or two of those products a try out.

You keep hearing that because it is true. ;) FTX Global replaces default textures but does nothing with the land class which takes care of where the textures are placed so that means that where default textures show repetitive scenery, FTX Global will also show repetitive scenery. You only get to see different textures, that's all. OpenLC will remedy this by completely rearranging all textures plús also adding more new textures. Vector will also take care of some more variation but OpenLC is the main add-on to look at for this.

Landclass generally cannot fully eliminate repetetive textures (though it does help in providing a bit more variety), but texturing by its very nature is a repetetive process. That said, Orbx has come up with some innovative processes in the past, so I'm willing to see what they can do to combat the issue. It is theoretically possible to eliminate a lot of texture repetetiveness, but the reason it is so hard is due to the different blends and shaders you have to apply. Hence, applying the shaders and blending zones is very difficult to do without it looking wrong, because there are too many different combinations of density, color variations, and contrast.

The upcoming LC and vector products should almost completely eliminate the repeating textures so visible at altitude. I'm pleased with FTXG so far and have tested it in a wide variety of areas. I have an assorted mix of 3rd party airports and they don't conflict with FTXG as far as I can tell so far. As has been stated, I'm very pleased with the enhanced autogen and night lighting improvements over default. The Iceland demo is just icing on the cake. Regards

I typically fly NGX and Q400 - and love what FTXGlobal has done for my Sim. For me it is a fresh start, and just what I was looking for.

I've followed the settings in the guide, added DX10 Fixer, LOD 6.5 and 2048 bit textures... Just sweet.

Cheers,

Billy
