We need a boxed version of P3d v2.

Yes we have the down load to P3D but we always want our doors open to new users and that would be impossible if LM closed it's doors to this effort (which is not an unreasonable scenario).

I really can't understand your logic here. If LM were to close their doors, they would also stop production of the disk copies, so you would be in exactly the same position. Surely? And let's also be frank, this is NOT a consumer product for sale on Amazon, retail stores etc. We all need to move on from this mindset.

Comparing P3D to Microsoft Flight, is like comparing P3D to a dirty diaper.

Haven't we?

Well, I'll leave it as some of us use it as much as we can as a sim.

Maybe so.

I wasn't comparing the products but rather the situation.

I can't believe the hate for Microsoft Flight continues. Did you know that Microsoft Flight has more realistic flight dynamics than Prepar3D 2.0, because they are the same with FSX?

I know. I guess I should have worded it to include "Microsoft - as related to Flight" and "Lockheed-Martin - as related to P3D"...

Clearly, LM is investing quite a lot of resources into P3D, it surely won't just be "dumped" off all of a sudden with everyone pulled off of it. Possible, yes, but highly unlikely. Even so, it would be left (as-is even) in much better shape and a better overall product than Flight could ever have hoped to be.

To be fair Dillon, having a boxed version of P3D would make absolutely no difference at all.

Take a look at all the other major software packages like Office, Photoshop, etc. They can all be purchased on a disk in a box, but they all require online activation.

The days of major software products being supplied on a disk that can simply be installed and run are gone.

Boxed

If one insist on round things for storage

-Takes a week to get in the mail. Download a few hours

-Burn down load to R/W DVD then will always have latest updates

-Boxed are a b to update, update the download and burn to DVD

DVD/CD are a thing of the past. Flash memory is all I use.

I think one other thing that we all need to be mindful of here Dillon is that P3d's core target audience is the commercial sector. By that I mean, businesses. And I can assure you that the last thing any business wants, are retail boxes lying around on their shelves. They want digital distribution.

Us hobbyists are not P3d's core market. We are however, very lucky to be able to ride on the shirtales so to speak. But it will require a change of mindset and possibly a slight change of our expectations. Exciting isn't it?

The activation limit appears to be '1' anyway for the academic version, so if you're going to install that theoretical boxed copy on a new PC you're going to need to email LM to activate it anyway. If they're closed down you're going to be SOL whether you have a disc or not.

This is going to sound a bit harsh but I think its needs to be said and a few examples of how things are changing in the wider world. I suggest updating your thinking, physical copies of software in the commercial business world is going the way of the zip drive (Remember them bad boys?). The latest versions of MS Office are cloud based, the Adobe products are cloud based and most training sims are downloads, Chrome OS's are very much cloud based systems as are many other of the latest tablet/laptop cross overs.

As has been pointed out already, a lot here need to get out of the mindset of a standard consumer, thats not what is being offered here. Its a development sandbox tool for training use and for developers to develop on to offer there own training/simulation solutions. It will always lack the polish of an out of box sim you might have purchased in a store as this is not what commercial training simulators have ever or will ever be.

..and don't be surprised to find out that you may at some point in the future, be required to provide a Student ID from an accredited flight school, or that your front-end won't let you into the application because the EULA was re-worded. LM may simply regard the current flock of downloads as "Phase 2 of the P3D Beta Tests".

All speculation, and worst-case scenarios, I know, but read ANZ's post above....

Business and pleasure don't mix. Business is business.

FSX - DX10...? Yes, I think so - Steve's fix gives FSX some new life and excitement. When LM release a genuinely retail product for anyone to use as they wish - that's when I think I'll put out some shekels.

Why not just burn the .exe to a DVD?  If you don't have a DVD burner than go to your local Best Buy or Wal-Mart and buy a $5 20GB USB Stick and use that.

About 2 years ago I spent $40 and bought a 500GB second hard drive just to store random crap on and it is where I keep anything I think I need to back up, including games, movies, payware add-ons, etc.  It's a cheap investment if you're worried about things like that, which I am not but it's always nice to know you have back-ups.
