Come on, guys... don't you think we were a little harsh? I meant my post kindly. 5 posts isn't a lot in two years - he might not use the forum much. (Admittedly, my post count is not much higher here - but over the course of several bouts of server issues at SOH, I've gotten several thousand posts there!) This kind of ettiquite takes time to learn and I've made some pretty stupid mistakes in posts long since deleted back when I was new.

Hi again,

Let's see if I've got all the names that have posted a reply above this one to what I now

think; CORRECTION, now believe to be a 'LOUSY' question: - ematheson. wingZ. Daveo. gizmosellsbunnys. ViperPilot. mebull. C-JEAN. Jeff H. ANZ121. gwillmot. alderson57.

I was not trying to say that designers weren't up to scratch in any way as I interpreted the responses to be; so too each and everyone of you, and any other scenery designers that read this reply post I

humbly apologise for the question and its contents within!

To gwillmot, I accept your nomination with humility and remorse, and will gladly accept the award if I win.

At least then I can say that I've won a award, but for all the wrong reasons; be it for the 'Worst

Question Posted or wooden spoon 'Foot in the Mouth' award!

Good reply ire. I guess my reply was fuelled by the fact that it was freeware designers that gave so much, and were an integral part of building this hobby in its "golden years" to what we have now. Sadly, those days are disappearing and this hobby has become so commercial that freeware products are reducing in choice and availability.

Why? I suspect that this is in part fuelled by commercialism and "fanboyism" - that "art of loving without question" and accepting "that which it is" because the customer handed over hard earned money and because he or she did so, it has to be better (at least in the mind of the person that handed over their cash). Whilst in some cases this is true, in many it is not.

Regardless, it was the freeware designers that pushed this product to what it is today. Anybody remember Eric Ernst and the impact he had on this hobby?

If you do, add to this thread without demonstrating a culture of "fanboyism" - Today, his company gets slammed because PMDG products look a little more refined, yet they were light years behind what he started. And he started freeware.

Let's turn this into a thread to celebrate freeware designers.

Anybody remember Wagner Beskow and the amazing Piper Warrior II panel he did? That was in the days when we had to manually unzip the files and move the files into the correct folder. Many who read this forum can't do that today - because they expect it to be done for them.

Long live freeware!!! In many ways it was, and, although diminishing, it still continues to be better than a lot of the commercial crap that constantly gets shoved down our throats.

Bed time for me.

Well said, Ire. I must say that your gracious response has disqualified you from the "wooden spoon - Foot in the mouth" award. In my opinion there has been free ware such as scenery that was so poorly thought out or designed that it was actually harmful to install. I remember one from some time ago where the author had files that overwrote several stock files and literally ruined some peoples installation of their simulator to the point that even though the scenery was removed the damage was already done. So,  . . . . ,yes there are some stinkers out there. They deserve different mention and a different label than work that is just not as good as some might wish.

Best regards,

Mel

Ire,

I sincerely apologize if my initial Reply was disparaging in any way. My comments were about Freeware designers in general, and how they're sharing their add ons for the enjoyrment of our hobby.

I'll be honest; I have very few large Add on Airports, with the exception of maybe Anchorage (PANC) and Ketchikan (PAKT). Those came from the assorted FS File Libraries, but the majority of my add on 'airports' are small backcountry strips spread out all over, and I randomly picked those out, too. If they show up on the GPS, that's all I care about! :P

Hi and WOW,

After a sleepless with 'the worry beads' night I open the Avimsim Forum to find these replies.

I did learn about etiquette in my early days way before Flight Simulators were invented, but in this case (The post I wrote about) I had a memory lapse.

A lesson from a good friend of mine in learning to loose and show dignity in doing so when I fist took up Tenpin Bowling in the early sixties set me on the right path and you guys reminded me of that lesson!

To WingZ, I agree; there are a lot of great freeware downloads to be had here at Avsim and I've downloaded many of them.

To ematherson, Correct on the amount of posts I've submitted. I've tried to ask pertinent questions, but in this case I guess it was one that the Avsim Board should have removed and 'flushed down the toilet'!

To ANZ121, I'm no scenery designer, re-painter or any other thing, but I would still like to think that airport/s that were designed in the earlier years of the flight simulator can be improved (with the aid of the newer editing Tools) to the standards that are achieved today and re-loaded to the freeware websites; first of course would have to be the Avsim website!

You mentioned in your reply about manually unzipping downloaded files and putting them in the correct folders. I still do it today if having to copy and paste a cfg file, (which I had no idea what that was until I was shown how to open it) or put Scenery and Texture files into the correct folders, effects files into the right folder, etc, and doing similar for the PMDG re-paints or any files that don't have an auto installer. Does that qualify?

To mebull, and to everyone who were quick to respond to my apology thanks for your kind words, which I never expected, but are appreciated.

I will chose my topics and words within a lot better in the future.

And don't delete me from those awards nominations. God, I'm and 'Old carrot' and I don't win zip anymore, not even a Lotto prize!

Regards, ire.

Tbh I was surprised to see the thread title without a padlock beside it, but well handled by all I see :)

Few thoughts on freeware/criticism. First and foremost, infantile ranting and abuse is intolerable - period.

Among reasonable people, some say 'if you can't do better be totally quiet', but I think if I submit something for public consumption, even freely, then I ought to also be 'entitled' to criticism of the kind displayed (and graciously received) in this very thread. That is, mature, respectful pointing out of how I might improve, especially from those who either :  A. know the particular paint, model, airport etc etc better than I do and/or B. DO in fact know better than me how to build what I submitted. Is that not how we learn and grow? I've seen many freeware authors improve this way over the years. We just need to be respectful, and appreciative - always.

Regards,

Mark

Time to lock the thread, methinks. The point has been made, Ire has apologized, and now we're beating a dead horse. Ire doesn't deserve that, neither do we.
