Lockheed Releases P3D V2.1

Featured Replies

WOW, what a thread! Despite faults and errors still present in v2.1 I'd like to chime in and focus on the positives as well:

a)  LM did find time to implement new requested features in v2.1. despite all the major problems they needed to solve.

b) They reached out to Saitek (affordable hardware for almost any home simmer) to get their stuff working.

c) They have direct dialogue with a number of develoeprs to figure out problems and discuss features.

d) They are still on the ball and will continue to refine the product.

That said, at this point in time I do feel P3D is the swansong of the FSX platform. You can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig. LM might be dedicated, but there are many issues that might never get solved by simply editing the existing FSX code. The quality and complexity of addons have reached a level incompatible with a 32-bit environment, and once you have gotten used to immerive HD graphics, it's hard to go back to FS2004/early FSX standards.

I experienced MS Flight as a much more mature and futureproof platform. P3D v2 still feels more like a service pack than a next generation version of MS Flight Simulator. The amount of work that has gone into converting ESP to DX11 standards seems massive, and the new volumetric fog, shadow and dynamic lighting system is very nice. However, apart from a few new aircraft very little has been done to other major areas like graphical textures, updated airport and nav. data, accuracy of landclass system, sloped textures (Cliffs still looks like melted rubber or something), ATC, flight model, user friendly developer tools (look at Outerra's road builder for instance), scenery library (what a chaos when you have 100+ entries!), snow effect, weather system, AI system etc. If you've spent $400 on Prepar3D v1 and v2 there are areas where you have gotten very little for your money in terms of upgrades compared to FSX.

But what choice do we have? I enjoy this hobby and for the last few years P3D is the only platform that seems to be going somewhere. X-Plane just doesn't have the addons I need to enjoy what I have in P3D (Detailed freeware scenery of my home country for all seasons coupled with realistic Ai aircraft and ship traffic).

Definitely!  They're dressing out that pig as good as possible!

I hope non of the ex-Aces team read this, because it shows a complete lack of understanding and class my friend. Oink!

No no it shows I read simmerhead's post above my friend and like to at least try to give a plug to LM while trying not to highlight simmerhead's apparent complete lack of understanding and class.   Wuff Wuff!

haha, oops!

Speaking Saitek, I just recently picked up their Cessna Yoke ... it was a returned item at Fry's Electronic so I got it pretty cheap $140.  But I can't for the life of me figure what I can do with the three position switch (think it's button 23,24,25) ... P3DV2.1 only seems to see one button 23.  Anyone got some hints on how/what to map this 3 position switch to?

Rob.

With fsuipc and linda you can pretty much map each position to what you like. But of course you need action that are mutually exclusive. For instance in the duke piston vc, there is two lighting switches that are 3 positions so they coul be good candidates.

On the Duke turbine, I use the mag position selector on my Saitek switches panel as a three position switch. On the first position when selected, i activate the starter, then the ignition switch. On the second position, the ignition switch go to the auto position in the vc and the mag switch in the vc is put to the on position for 2 seconds ( to check for correct amp level) then mag off again as prescribed in the checklist. It makes starting the turbine much easier as the only action with the mouse in the vc is the fuel condition lever then i can concentrate at looking at the various gauges for proper temperature, torque, N1 speed, oil pressure in the green and correct amp during mag check.

You got the idea... Things that requires sequential actions....

Excellent suggestions, thank you.
