Hello, thank-you for taking the time to read this.  I have a Gigabyte Z87X-UD5H motherboard and the i7.

I've spent a considerable amount of time exploring the net, trying to understand how to overclock my i7; I'm confused and

have been unsuccessful thus far.

There is an auto-clock feature in the Bios and I've set it to 4.3.  I have a H80i Corsair liquid CPU cooler.

I would really be greatful, if someone could please tell me what values to plug in.

The default values under Home/Performance in the Bios...

Host Clock Value                                             100.00MHz

CPU Base Clock                                              Auto

Processor Base Clock (Gear Ratio)                 1.00x

CPU clock ratio                                                 35

CPU frequency                                                  3.50GHz

CPU Vcore                                                        1.084V (Auto)

System Memory Multiplier                                 13.33 (Auto)

Memory Frequency                                             1333MHz

Processor Graphics Clock                                  1250 (Auto)

I play FSX with REX4, Orbx global, Genesis; on 3 monitors with Surround off a Nvidia 760.  I'm happy with the performance, but still shimmering((

Frustrated because I read that people are overclocking to 4.5 comfortably...

Thank-you.

Am I correct that the only values I play with are the VCore and the CPU Frequency and I'm to leave the other values alone???

I read that disabling Hyper Threading will reduce the temperature by 5 degrees...???

Adjust the cpu clock ratio which will in turn adjust the frequency - ie: clock ratio of 43 = 43x100mhz = 4.3Ghz.  To accomplish this try raising the CPU Vcore to 1.275, but I wouldn't recommend going over 1.30v.  Your ability to overclock will also depend on the cpu cooler.  I'd try to keep temperatures at or below 70C while running fsx.  If you are using a stock cooler I wouldn't bother overclocking as the 4770K will automatically step up to 3.9GHz under load anyway.

Yep, slowly bump up the multiplier and the vcore in the smallest increments your board offers.

On mine I had 44x and auto vcore otherwise the thing wouldn't pass a stability test. I wouldn't recommend auto vcore. Set yours up manually. Mine ran 3 years at 1.325v then a month ago decided to stop working at 4.4 GHz. I pulled back to 42x and it runs 1.288v stable. I had a poor CPU to begin with. I imagine it will keep slowly failing (over clock shortens CPU life).

HT off will save you more like 10 degrees actually.

I know you say you have dome research on the net, but it doesn't sound like you have, given that it's basic questions you are asking.

If I were you, I would have a look on Youtube, for the videos by Asus technical guru JJ. I know you don't have an Asus board, but some of his tips will be useful.  In addition, Google for i7 4770K overclocking.

You say you are overclocking to 4.3, with the motherboards software, but you also say you have been unsuccessful. 4.3 is a reasonable overclock, some chips won't exceed that.

So in what way do you regard your endeavors as unsuccessful? Do you expect higher frequency? Or is your system unstable at 4.3?

WARNING: If you're using an adaptive voltage, and you will be with your motherboards automatic overclocking feature, be careful running synthetic stress tests, or you temperatures will be excessive.

CPU Cooler: You haven't told us which CPU cooler you are using.

Ryan above suggested that overclocking shortens the CPU's lifespan.Yes it does, but then on the other hand CPU lifespan is measured in thousands of hours. Any noticeable desegregation is unlikely at reasonable voltage, within the time span we ordinarily replace our CPU's.

Thank you all for the help.

I have a H80i Corsair liquid CPU cooler. Do you feel it is

good enough, or do I need a new one??

My measurement for failure: I tried to overclock

to 4.5 and what I found was I started getting screen tearing and

Large black shapes started appearing on the screen: leading to the

Blue screen of death approximately 15 minutes

into my flight. "A problem has been detected and

windows has been shutdown to prevent damage

to your computer"

I am running fsx on an Nvidia card GTX 760 with

Surround. I'm trying to OC because I'm not happy with the default clock speed. I continue to see choppiness (even when performing a 10 degree bank) :objects

rendering (even in rural areas). With that said,

It seems quite smooth during straight and level flight. The only

addons I use are : rex4, orbx global and vector, genesis for mesh.

The honest truth is that there is a ton of info. On the net, and

a good amount is conflicting, so with contradictory information, I have

become confused. I did use the ******* tweak, so I'm wondering if

perhaps I should manually delete my .cfg file and

regenerate a fresh one, with minimal manual tweaks??

Thank- you all

J-e-s-u-s tweak.......

I did watch froogle's videos and he mentioned

that he only enters two .cfg tweaks (highmem and

buffer pool )

Lockig at your dafault vore should be no problem to run 4.5-4.6 around 1.3v.

What type of mems do you run? You seems not to run XMP on the GA board.

My quest , your goal and have you experianced with the gigabyte bios? Its differnt to asus

Do you want to run all manual OC with all multis and voltages tuned manually , if that i can help you sort out your OC run My 1150 , 1155 systems on GA MoBo:s .

You don't a pile of .cfg tweaks with a newer system.

I  just use the highmem without the bufferpools and under [MAIN] FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.15

I do find that I only get smooth results with the frames locked to 30 inside the sim.  With unlimited it is a stuttery mess and if I lock at 20 I get a  consistent fine stutter, esp. in side views, due to the low frame rate.  30 FPS is very smooth even through all kinds of turns and maneuvers.  If I find I can't consistently maintain 30 fps with a given aircraft/scenery combination I just lower my settings via a saved profile that will get the FPS back up to a steady 30 (usually I get rid of vehicle traffic first).

Hope this helps.

CPU magazine had a series of articles on system build a while back that may be of help. I believe they are available online.

Thank you so much for all the information, Inreally appreciate everyone's assistance. Someone asked me about my Ram: it's Trident (4 sticks) each stick: ddr3 -2400C10D-8GTX (4gx2 XMP ready)

I think I will delete my cfg and do the suggested minimum tweaks. I will also look into XMP, as of this moment, I have no idea what it is or how to set it up in the bios

Thx guys!!

Well, it's certainly not the best out there. So what core temperature  was your CPU at 4.3, with the automatic overclocking utility?

You say you went for 4.5 but had issues, did you realise that in terms of frame rate, the difference between 4.3 and 4.5 is absolutely minimal. It's also true that 4.3 to 4.5 GHz is pretty average for most i7 4770K's.

I'm not happy with the default clock speed. I continue to see choppiness (even when performing a 10 degree bank) :objects

Pushing your overclock from 4.3 to 4.5 won't make any noticeable difference in that respect, it's only a 3% increase. I would say get rid of all the J e s u s tweaks. Delete the FSX cfg and allow FSX to rebuild it. Just add HIGHMEMFIX, [it's not a tweak it's a fix] and also, if you have a graphics card with greater than 1 gig of memory, add the BP=0 tweak.

That's' it, that's all I run with.

In addition, set sensible slider settings. Even with a 4770K overclocked, it's still not wise to go insane with slider settings.

In my opinion, 4.3 GHz should have been perfect for you, and the reason for your dissatisfaction with FSX performance lies elsewhere. Sliders, AA settings, look to these. Also add the bufferpools zero tweak.

And if you do revert to 4.3 Ghz, and it's stable, tell us what CPU temperature that generates. If a CPU overheats, it will throttle back to avoid damage, thus reducing performance.

It is possible to have overclocking restrictions with 2400 RAM. There is a great deal of variability in terms of the capability of the Haswell CPU's IMC. Using a different divider to drop your memory down  may enable you to run at 4.5.

XMP will set you RAM automatically in terms of timings, frequency and voltage.

4 sticks, all slots populated, can make it harder to overclock.

If you are still oblivious as to even start, or even set ram to XMP, do look at the Asus Z87 videos. Not your board, but it will give you an idea as to what it's all about.
