FANTASTIC CPU Cooler!

Featured Replies

My bad I have the SilverArrow SB-E Extreme

Ha, that explains it then. Good cooler though the Silver Arrow. Noisy I would think though, with those mega powerful high RPM fans? I bet they don't usually need to rev up to max though do they?

Well they are noise but with the crap clocked out of every part of the system every fan in there is cranked up full blast but I cant hear a thing since the system is remote from game room.

Here you go, this what I bought with my work xmas bonus...shame the gf wanted an engagement ring...simplest decesion I ever made !!

Love this cooler! This blows away the Hyper 212 Evo that it replaced. Even with the fans running full speed, it's extremely quiet and much cooler! I've been running a 2700K Sandy Bridge system at 5.0 GHz for a couple of years now with no temperature problems. I plan on sticking with this cooler when I upgrade later this year to a Devil's Canyon CPU. Should perform well since the new CPU should be a much cooler performer than the current Haswell CPU (due to the new TIM that intel will be using - shouldn't have to be delidded to get decent cooling).

Good call Ted, basic thermal dynamics. I get a good, stable OC of 4.6GHz at 60 degrees C on my i7 2600K with the Corsair H100, running FSX. Hard core benchmarking and stress testing runs a smidge hotter. I chose the H100 for it's fit inside my case and because it is less obstructive to air flow around the GPU.

I also invested in the ASUS Sabertooth Z77 MOBO for the same reason. The Sabertooth is shrouded and matched with the Corsair Carbide 500R case. All PSU and data wiring is back mounted resulting in a very clean build. I'm sure that the top line air coolers would work well, it's just that the Corsair case and cooler are designed as a system which gave me a great looking build with outstanding performance.

If you're starting from scratch, consider the case, motherboard, CPU, GPU and PSU as a system and you'll end up with a great looking and performing build.

Good luck with your build,

My NHD-14 has been running every day on top of my 2600k @4.5ghz for 2 years nearly.

My PC is on for at least 12hrs a day usually and it has not batted an eyelid.  Temps are the same running prime95 as they were the day I built the machine and setup my overclock.

Just a pity I got a poor overclcocker with my chip as it wont go past 4.6 unless I stick crazy voltage into it.

Doogie

I noticed you're specifying eight cores in your system description. Do you have hyper threading enabled? If so, turn it off and retest your voltages. Hyper threading adds considerable overhead to the processor and at the same clocking or ratio setting, causes an increase in junction temperatures. Unless you're running 64 bit apps that can use it, I'd suggest turning it off.

Well no. Corsair cases aren't designed to function specifically with their AIO water coolers. It's not a system. Air coolers cam be fitted just as easily to Corsair cases. In fact Corsair cases are designed for all cooler types. Precisely why there's a big cut-out in the motherboard tray for fitting air cooler back plates.

Corsair may give you features that increase AIO compatibility, but then so do all of the latest cases these days.

You don't get outstanding performance just because you have installed a Corsair cooler in a Corsair case. No more so that installing an equally performing air cooler in a Corsair case.

I wouldn't want people to think they should be lean toward Corsair coolers, just because they have a Corsair case.

Uh Martin,

Did I somehow give you the impression that I was pimping for Corsair? All I said was that the Corsair 500R case and the Corsair H100 cooler perform well and look well. This opinion is offered freely and I'm sure that it's worth the price:). The point I was trying to make was that for some of us, the layout and appearance of a system has some importance also. If you read the whole post you'd note that I AGREED with Ted regarding the thermal transfer characteristics of high end air coolers and like priced closed loop liquid coolers like the H100. I chose the H100 because 1- it does it's job, ie cooling the CPU, 2- it looks great and 3- it allows for good circulation around the video card.

Most of the observations made in these forums are anecdotal at best and hardly rise to the level of scientific inquiry so if you agree with what I say then I'm "well versed" or "wise". If you don't agree then I'm "out of touch" or "poorly informed". Either way beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Just make sure you order the CORRECT version. There's at least two types

Hi Phil. I only see Socket 2011 on Scan's website. As I have a Socket 1150 i5-4670K, is the other version available for this particular CPU. Just ordered an Asus Z87 A MoBo, and was contemplating a Corsair AIO Liquid Cooler, which I may have to revert to if I cannot lay my hands on this particular cooler. Your advice would be welcome. Thanks.

Apologies Rick, didn't mean to be pedantic.

It was just that when you said... "Corsair case and cooler are designed as a system" I interpreted that in terms of the dictionary definition of "system". Namely, "a group of related parts that work together". And "designed" as created to be that way by the manufacturer.

Easy to get confused on a forum, thanks for the clarification.

I wouldn't agree in regrd to greater air flow around the video card, coolers like the D14 don't restrict airflow around the video card. They can around the motherboard VRM's of course, but Noctua thought of that and designed the centrally mounted 140 fan to overlap the heat sink and direct a considerable quantity of air across the motherboard.

Aesthetically, yes, some prefer the minimalistic look of AIO coolers.

Got mine from 'scan pc'

after first ordering the wrong one from eBuyer

Windows 10 (x64) - X-Plane 11 - M/B: Asus ROG Maximus IX Hero - CPU: i7 7700k (@5.0GHz) - RAM: 32Gb Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 @ 3200MHz - Video: GTX1080ti - Cooling: Custom water loop (EK 140 Revo D5 pump/res combo, EK EVO CPU block, EK XE360 Rad)

Thanks for that.Phil. Sadly, it seems that Scan are only stocking the NH-D14 in the Socket 2011,1155-56, 775 flavours, but my LGA1150 for the i5-4670K Haswell. Will try e-Buyer.

Sorry to confuse but I'm another Phil. However, I purchased a Noctua NH-U14S Ultra-Quiet Slim CPU 1 £59.59 from Scan UK 2 weeks back and that is socket 1150 and is used with my z87 Asus mobo.

No need to be confused or to confuse. In fact it is most helpful. Because that is the motherboard I'm opting for, the Asus X87 A. I'll take a peek at Scan's website again seeing it was only a mere 2 weeks ago you got this Noctua NH-U14S Ultra-Quiet CPU air cooler, because I'd like to retain my current Antec 900/2 case.

Rick Almeida

I've just sent you a PM with my order details, hope it helps!

Phil
