Disappointed With My New I7 4790K System!

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I've just built my new PC just for FSX. The following is my pc specification:

1-CPU 4790K

2-16GB Ram 1866

3-H100i 240mm Corsair liquid cooler

4-Video card: Gigabyte R9 290

5- Mobo: Ga-Sniper-G1 Z97

Cost me so far about $1650

Before I started the FSX I was soo excited! Also installed Aerosoft Airbus X Extended

I started my first test flight with max display settings, then I became so disappointed!

Fps was great locked at 30 FPS in small cities, but it dropped to 15-20 when I fly over LAX Or EGLL!

Any ideas?

#1 FSX and AMD are not great friends.

#2 You aren't providing near enough information. You locked it at 30fps how? You can't jack everything up and expect miracles.

If you look at my system specs, I stay at 30 fps in just about every scenario. DX10.  ASN major storms, you name it.  On landing though? Not always the case. That came from serious trial and error.

Well, the first thing I noticed is that the Video card is not good enough, even though, it costed me about $400. I think I must return it back and get the EVGA 780 or 780Ti depends on what you guys will recommend for me.

When I said locked at @30 Fps, I meant that the display settings tap I've adjusted the Frame rate to 30 not unlimited.

Sounds more that you ar CPU bound , in Dazz Cloud tests the R9 290 performing like my Titan bet it have noting to do with the GPU.

Problay you kill your CPU with the sliders all to the right.

Why would the AMD R9 290 not be good enough for FSX? Comparison benchmarks indicate that this card is somewhere between the GTX 770 and GTX 780, which sounds easily good enough to me.

Then back off the sliders. I have a powerful rig too, but I never run with everything set to max. Too many think that just because they have a powerful system that everything will run great at max. Not necessarily so.

Not surprised if you've gone crazy with sliders.

Try no frame rate limiter at all. No internal limiter and no external limiter. Many of us find it to be a revelation. But do it with sensible slider settings, sliders don't have to be at max for the sim to look good.

15-20 FPS sounds about normal in those areas, no system is going to give you 30FPS with high settings in every situation especially if you have complex addon scenery &  aircraft around.

Your video card seems to be good, FSX just happens to be a horribly optimized program that prefers Nvidia cards for some reason.

refers Nvidia cards for some reason.

The way Nvidia handles shaders.

I average 25-30 FPS or so says the Shift+Z which is inaccurate, but my game runs smooth even with 2048-4096 textures. Your I7 4970 is very capable when Overclocked correctly to handle FSX with very high settings. Just remember that FSX is a game that is not all about maxing out sliders, it takes a careful balance and some .cfg tweaks to get it to run right even if you are using a PC built specifically for FSX.

Have you locked your frames to 1/2 refresh rate of your monitor?

Have you placed the correct Affinity Mask in your .cfg?

Have you disabled bufferpools?

Are you using the in game anti-aliasing or Catalyst anti-aliasing?

What is your Fiber Frame Time Fraction set to in your .cfg?

there are a few others but these are come critical ones to consider when looking for smoothness in FSX. To my knowledge no one runs FSX at 60 frames with total smoothness with sliders maxed and everything checked in high detailed scenery using HD Payware aircraft.

My System at a glance:

AMD FX 8350 @ 4.0 GHz (no overclock, not even AUTO)

EVGA GTX 560Ti 448 FTW

16Gb (4x4) G.Skill Sniper DDR3 1866 RAM (CAS of 9)

Western Digital Velociraptor 500GB HDD (SATA-6, for FSX/P3D Only)

ASUS Sabertooth R2.0 Motherboard

Zalmann CNPS9900ALED CPU Cooler /w Arctic Silver 5

Can you please explain what are the tweeks to be adjusted?

I already have Highmemfis=1 and bufferpools=0

Thats all what I have

Here is what my config looks like for some of my tweaks.....

[Display]
BLOOM_EFFECTS=0
TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=40
UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT=30
WideViewAspect=True

[Main]
DisablePreload=1
FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.15

[DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti  .0]
Mode=1920x1080x32
Anisotropic=1

[GRAPHICS]
HIGHMEMFIX=1
TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=4096

[TERRAIN]
LOD_RADIUS=5.500000
MESH_COMPLEXITY=100
MESH_RESOLUTION=25
TEXTURE_RESOLUTION=29
AUTOGEN_DENSITY=4
DETAIL_TEXTURE=1
WATER_EFFECTS=5

[BUFFERPOOLS]
PoolSize=0

[JOBSCHEDULER]
AffinityMask=254

My Affinity mask is set to have the first core or Core 0 on my 8 Core CPU run background tasks, all 7 other cores are running in FSX. I also prefer to use Mid 2x for water animations as it will reflect the Sun/Moon, Stars, Your Aircraft, and Clouds but not any of the terrain, this helps keep frames up and still simulate a "living environment". As for Max Texture Load being at 4096 which is the highest FSX can go, I use REX4 and their airport textures can be set to either 1024 or 4096, so I like my HD airport textures, if you are running default you could just use 2048 as most HD aircraft are set to use 2048 textures. I also like to use DXT1 and DXT 5 textures in the game as they greatly improve performance and they still look great. I also prefer to use a LOD radius of 5.5, some people like to use 6.5 but using that in some really detailed environments can cause OOM's and I have never really heard of anyone getting OOM's at 5.5 or less.

Pay attention here....

I use an Nvidia Card, so I use Nvidia Inspector to change my graphics profile for FSX. I use Nvidia Inspector to handle to Anti-Aliasing and the SuperSampling as well as locking my VSync to 1/2 refresh rate which is 30 because my monitor is a standard 60Hz monitor. So with my VSync locked to 30Hz and FSX set to 30 Frames I get good performance, now for you using AMD Catalyst I have no clue how to set that up, someone might though.

So, what do you guys suggest me to do? Should I return the R9 290 GPU card and get the EVGA Nvidia GTX 280?

The 280 is frankly, pretty weak. While it wont make a huge difference, there is a noticeable difference if you get yourself a 760 or better yet 780TI. Much better.

Why your GRAPHICS section has only two lines? Where is the rest of it?

You mean the one I have now which is the R9 290 is good enough?
