November 30, 201411 yr Well, the show was about a Colgan Q400 that did indeed fall out of the sky at an alarmingly high rate. And it was an accident that those of us in the business were expecting. How many more would be required before you would consider it 'alarming'? Anyways, the fares aren't really the issue. The issue is the squeezing of the regional subcontractors by the network carriers for low costs in the manner that walmart squeezes their suppliers for low costs. A lot more to consider it alarming. Capitalism happens to airlines as well. The big bully the small. Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
December 1, 201411 yr For one, the larger airlines use their power to make subcontractors compete fiercely for contracts by underbidding eachother. Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
December 1, 201411 yr This is just sensational journalism. The video tries to blame discount airline practices as being the cause of the accident. I wonder what the passengers of AF447 were thinking as they plunged to their deaths! Super VC10 into LOWI with PF3 at a cinema near you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=298UDyNmgUA
December 1, 201411 yr For one, the larger airlines use their power to make subcontractors compete fiercely for contracts by underbidding eachother. That's how the market works. As a passenger, I use my power to get airlines to compete fiercely for for my flights my underbid by underbidding each other.. Gerry Howard
December 1, 201411 yr Author Many folks seem to commenting without watching the video... It looks like. The issue is not about competing... the issue is, regional airlines do not seem to have the same or similar requirements for their pilots as qualification. At 600 hrs becoming a captain. Even I should qualify...with a little bit more training.. maybe an additional 3-4 months? I believe those young pilots telling like it is..over that sleazy looking lawyer fellow representing the regional airliners. It's Just me. Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter

The issue is most certainly about competition, because in an effort to cut costs junior personell is hired because they are cheaper. Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
December 1, 201411 yr I saw this documentary a couple of years ago and can't say that I was all that surprised, although I did find that the salaries for some of these guys was absurdly low and much lower than I would have imagined. Like most things in life, you get what you pay for. Cheap flights mean that the airline has to cut costs somewhere within their operation - one just has to hope and pray that safety, maintenance, and personnel competence and experience aren't included in the cost-cutting. I no longer worry about airline safety, though, as I decided a couple of years ago that I was through with flying. I just got tired of paying hundreds of hard-earned dollars and then being unappreciated and treated with disrespect all the way from the ticketing counter to the destination airport. The only way I'd fly again would be in an emergency situation where I urgently needed to be somewhere fast. December 1, 201411 yr This reminds me of the Ryanair CEO making a statement that co-pilots are not truly needed and only 1 pilot would be sufficient for a save flight. Forcing savings means cutting corners that can't be good. ryan jerry
December 1, 201411 yr Does that mean they are also unsafe pilots? No, but personally I'd rather fly with an experienced crew, than a fresh one. Because if things start to go wrong I'm pretty sure the experienced pilots (on average) are better at handeling the situation. That said, pilots are people, and people are different. Statistics will only help you in theory. When you crash, it really doesn't matter that airline travel is safe statistically. Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
December 1, 201411 yr I referred to safe pilots rather than experienced pilots. Does a pilot have really 10 years experience or only 1 years experience 10 times over - there is a difference. Gerry Howard
December 1, 201411 yr Wow, 16 hour days, getting paid for flying 2 hours and staying in an over crowed crash pad ???? I like my sim pit more & more........
