Multiple Display settings for P3D v2.4?

Featured Replies

For some reason I have not yet nailed down, I do get some OOM in V2.4 when flying tubeliners (even default), but not so much flying GA aircraft.

OK now, granted, that is generally while using AS Next (undocked on a second display) and running an undocked instrument panel on a third display. The main P3D VC is on my main display. The other two displays are 23" touch screens. All have the same resolution, 1920 x 1080.

I also use Track IR some, but not always. I don't think that is what the cause is, in any case.

Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 16.0 GB

Name NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770

Win 7 64-bit

I have never tried to OC.

I do run MyTraffic 5.4C and a lot of addon scenery, but I am doing my testing right now with default aircraft. We all understand that A318/A319, and A320/A320, and QWE and Majestic Dash 8 Q400 and the rest are awesome but they have some effect on VAS.

Runnning Rob's settings as shown here: http://www.robainscough.com/P3D_V2.php

I have taken out some HIMEMFIX and AFFINITY MASK settings from prepar3d.cfg file.

Also I have the current FSUIPC running as well as simconnect.

Questions:

V SYNC -- should this be set ON? Does it have any effect on me using multiple displays?

Single Monitor Display in NVIDIA Inspector -- should I set this to multiple?

Windowed Mode or Full Screen Mode? Or does it even matter in P3D 2.4?

Hoping for some guidance to help me narrow down the settings.

V Sync was my OOM problem. Since I stopped having it on ; no more OOM.  I would run and do run my sim at 40 fps.  The movies use 24 FPS and I don't notice any flicker at that speed so why stress your machine for no reason.

I would also try turning off all ground shadows. When I did, my FPS in Orbx went from average 15 FPS to 50 FPS. Shadows are the real killer in P3D. I currently have a stable, smooth, 40+ FPS experience in P3D with everything maxed, no ground shadows, with VC shadows enabled. Turning on vegetation shadows drops me to about 25-30 FPS, adding building shadows drops below 10. Not even touching cloud shadows at this point.

Good luck.

Thanks Jim, I appreciate it. Will test that both ways.

Do you run any secondary monitors, or panels or whatever?

Turning off tree and autogen shadows only gives me a few extra fps. Terrain shadows a bit heavier, but I've never seen anything close to a 35fps difference. One thing with P3D is that there appears no single fps killer. Every slider makes a few fps difference, but none doubles or halves  the fps.

You may have misunderstood my post - I dropped from about 40 to 25-30 with buildings shadows. That option had created the most significant drop in frames on my rig.

Yes I use two monitors.  The second is for Flight Sim Commander and chat when using Multiplayer.

BTW turning off ground shadows for 'other stuff' like vegetation and buildings and all that DID help with the FPS. But I don't know that it helped at all with VAS usage. Need more testing.

I also use 3 monitors with NVIDIA Surround (3x1920x1080) and a fourth monitor to display undocked windows (mostly PFD and ND in airliners). If I dial down the settings (autogen normal, only VC and cloud shadows, limited AI, low water details, no reflections, etc.) then I get ok performance (25-30 fps on large airports in the Aerosoft A320/321).

OOMs are an issue. I usually start P3D, select the aircraft and departure location, set the aircraft to Cold and Dark and then save the flight. Then I exit and load the saved flight (this was suggest by Rob). Helps with the VAS. Doing so, I can start most flights with 1-1.2 GB of free VAS which is sufficient to go from one add-on airport to the next. However, this strongly depends on the airports.

I've never flown with ground shadows as they don't appear to make much difference visually using Global/Vector/OpenLC.

Couldn't live without cloud or VC shadowing though. If I had to I'd go back to FSX DX10.

Carlo,

I can usually do this and get going with about 2.5 GB of VAS, sometimes even less, and so I can usually take off, at least, and get on my way with 1.5 GB of VAS left over. But I would not say that is enough to get me to the next airport in my case.

Maybe the fact that I am doing my testing at FlyTampa Cogenhagen is influencing this.

Absolutely, I'm with you there.

That's interesting. What airliner are you using? Because when I can manage to takeoff with 1+ GB of free VAS then I usually make it to the next add-on airport without problems (even no OOMs after arrival). Seems odd that your systems consumes that much of VAS during the flight that not even 1.5 GB of free VAS is enough. I only get problems when I takeoff with less than 1 GB of free VAS. Do you disable all other airports except for the departure and arrival airport?

No I do not, but I am seriously considering it.

I have taken out some HIMEMFIX and AFFINITY MASK settings from prepar3d.cfg file.

Highmem fix hasn't been needed in Prepar3d was fixed long ago in 1.x versions

Affinity masks shouldn't be needed since like v 2.3 but some people still use it anyways

Also I have the current FSUIPC running as well as simconnect.

Questions:

V SYNC -- should this be set ON? Does it have any effect on me using multiple displays?

User prefrence, use it if you have tearing, otherwise just leave it off, shouldn't have any effect on multiple displays. Make sure you have windows aero enabled though or you will have problems.

Single Monitor Display in NVIDIA Inspector -- should I set this to multiple?

I see this wrong info posted in tweak guides all the time - the "Multiple-displat/mixed GPU" setting does absolutely nothing in Direct X - only valid for Open GL per the Nvidia control panel -  just hold your mouse over it and read the info on the bottom of the window.

Windowed Mode or Full Screen Mode? Or does it even matter in P3D 2.4?

Doesn't matter in P3D - It's using a Pseudo full screen mode ( just a window the the border removed, they had to remove the real full screen mode due to compatibility issues)

Another tip...Don't turn off tesselation it will lead to other kinds of crashes
