December 25, 201411 yr Hi all I have always wondered does locking FPS need to be internal or external for fsx to run smooth ? Also does it make a difference running locked fps as opposed to unlimited FPS Thanks
December 25, 201411 yr I always believed in a locked 30FPS but I recently moved it to unlimited (in FSX) and find it works better in low GA flight with Orbx sceneries. But like everyone says.... every system is different.
December 25, 201411 yr Try both locked and unlimited frame rates and also try both full and windowed screens; then go with the combination that works best with your computer. On my system it just happens to be "locked in FSX at 30 with a windowed screen"; your system could be the exact opposite, so take a few minutes and find out what works best with your setup. Mike Mann
December 25, 201411 yr Commercial Member In my system setting FPS to "unlimited" from FSX settings and then locking it to 30 using an external FPS limiter works the best. Some people report exactly the opposite, try different options and see what works the best for you.
December 25, 201411 yr For sure, if you can keep CPU temperatures under control, overclocking your CPU buys you real FSX performance. Bert
December 25, 201411 yr I go back and forth depending on what I am flying. Currently I am using the PMDG NGX a lot so I've locked it down to 20 FPS. If I was using Carenado low and slow aircraft over ORBX scenery I would set it to unlimited. I would OC as well....biggest bang for your buck. I am using Intel Liquid Cooling on my CPU for that extra piece of mind, they are not too expensive as I paid under $100 for it Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
December 25, 201411 yr Author I tried overlcocking my I5 4670k to 4.2 but my £50 water cooling was giving me CPU temps of 70 degrees. Should I upgrade to double fan water cooling ?
December 25, 201411 yr I tried overlcocking my I5 4670k to 4.2 but my £50 water cooling was giving me CPU temps of 70 degrees. Should I upgrade to double fan water cooling ? It wouldn't hurt... But to be honest, 70 degrees isn't too bad. I prefer not to approach 80+. What voltage are you running?
December 26, 201411 yr After a lot of trial and error with unlimited framerates, external limiter and internal limiter, I settled on 30 fps using the internal limiter. That has served me well. As for overclocking, you want the highest overclock you can get before you lose stability and not so fast that you have overheating. With my chip, 3.7 to 3.8 GHz is about as far as I can go on both counts. All systems are different and your mileage may vary. As a rule of thumb, x% increase in clock speed = broadly x% increase in performance. December 26, 201411 yr 30 fps using internal limiter in fullscreen mode with 1/2 vsync.----> best smoothness here. Unlimited in FSX and externally limited by Nvidia Inspector or other limiters gave me to much stutter, also well illustrated by a high level of variance in fps display. December 26, 201411 yr You might want to test it for various scenarios. For some secenarious locked works best, for others unlimited works best. Usually it is the # auogen buildings and # cloud layers that will yield different behaviour from the FSX terrain engine. Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
