January 6, 201511 yr do you get any strange "thinning" of clouds the more north one travels? Yes, this is very noticeable, and has been there since FSX (maybe FS9 too?) I wonder if this could be addressed by LM as it does give the clouds an odd look, and with FTX NOR I'm am spending a lot of time in the far north.
January 6, 201511 yr Kostas of HiFiTechnologies mentioned that it's specific to how the FSX/P3D engine handles clouds as you approach the poles. Thanks Vic, that makes sense ... I had a hunch it wasn't something I'd done but "by design" I'm guessing is a world precision issue. Cheers, Rob.
January 6, 201511 yr Mike ... do you get any strange "thinning" of clouds the more north one travels? For some reason as I get closer to Tromso my clouds (cumulus) get thinner and taller. This is specific to v2.4 or recent cloud fix ... I've had this odd behavior in prior versions of P3D. Okay, I've had a chance to look around: P3D: Fair Weather ORBX Norway North 69 degrees North 71 degrees Mike
January 6, 201511 yr Thanks Mike, confirmed what I see in that Northern region ... I didn't fly northern regions much in FSX so never noticed. Cheers, Rob.
January 7, 201511 yr I performed the ".7" edit, and .8, and dialed back the cloud density. Better, but just slightly. Lots of tiles. Lots of popcorn. Not anywhere close to the beautiful cloud formations in FSX with REX+ASN. I know it has been stated that everyone has different opinions on what looks best, but I don't think anyone can justifiably argue that tiled popcorn looks good. I'd be very pleased if LM could get the default to behave like FSX, then we can tweak from there. At that point... feel free to make all the popcorn you wish! Thanks Aaron Aaron Thacker
January 7, 201511 yr Aaron, Try FSGRW at 100% realism ... far less "popcorn" as it favors stratus cloud layers not cumulus. Also REX Soft Clouds works VERY well. But just so you are aware, real world clouds can and do look like popcorn sometimes: Not my images (public domain) ... however, you might want to check out REX Weather Architect when it comes out. Cheers, Rob.
January 7, 201511 yr Aaron, Try FSGRW at 100% realism ... far less "popcorn" as it favors stratus cloud layers not cumulus. Also REX Soft Clouds works VERY well. I have never heard of FSGRW. Will look in to this for sure, thanks for the heads-up. I am not too picky in general, but after flying countless hours with REX+ASN in FSX, it's been difficult to immerse myself in P3Dv2 thus far, as the cloud formations stand out like a sore thumb against an otherwise splendid rendering of nature. Much appreciated. Aaron Aaron Thacker
January 7, 201511 yr ... however, you might want to check out REX Weather Architect when it comes out. I have been waiting for this for a long time. This will greatly please weather architects like me, but it won't rid us of thin clouds in the north, or popcorn if Cumulus is placed at high altitude. Stratus layers use the same Cumulus texture, but render them horizontally, which for the most part looks rubbish.. though I must say that image looks very nice [actually looking 3D]. I do however accept compromises have to be made until true volumetric clouds can be created without taking our PC's into single figure fps.. and those volumetric clouds can actually look good, unlike XP's horrible attempts... it seems we are years away.
January 8, 201511 yr Made a quick video of P3D v2.4 (with cloud fix) using REX Soft Clouds with both ASN and default P3D Thunderstorm weather theme ... both look exceptional to me. I'm actually pretty amazed I can get even this good a frame rate considering how well volumized (I know that's not a word) they look and with my graphics settings. Cheers, Rob.
January 8, 201511 yr Made a quick video of P3D v2.4 (with cloud fix) using REX Soft Clouds with both ASN and default P3D Thunderstorm weather theme ... both look exceptional to me. Indeed that looks fantastic. You sold me on the soft clouds. If you don't mind me asking, what is... Cloud density setting in P3D? # cloud layers set in ASN? tweak to cloud file? .7? Thanks for the video Rob! Aaron Aaron Thacker
January 8, 201511 yr Hi Aaron, Settings are here: http://www.robainscough.com/P3D_4K_Long_Haul.html ASN cloud layers = 3 ASN draw distance min 91 mi, max 100 mi cloud.fx multiplier = 0.61 Cheers, Rob.
January 8, 201511 yr Thanks Rob, after my tests I as well can confirm soft clouds have helped. NO repetitive tile effect to report on my sim either until getting high around FL290 and up George Kyriazis | www.georgekonline.com
January 8, 201511 yr Nice vid Rob did you guys ever tried width .6 and height .5 i did it reduces the popcorn effect a little. Greetz MJ My youtube blog________________________Prepar3D v2.5/v3
