January 4, 201511 yr I have been running an increased scale since LM reduced the size, finding .65 to be a good balance between size and performance. I have also lightened the clouds slightly by increasing another value below to 1.00f First of all thanks to everyone who is posting results and test. I did run some too just for myself. Here is what i did: I stated first with the distance. I went down to 500 -no like- opening door effect. I stay now @ 3000. Second i did a rescaling to 0.7 -light to moderate performance impact. When flying in PNW with extreme overcast conditions having cloud textures touching the ground i disabled the "Enhance Overcast Conditions" within ASN and reduced cloud coverage from Max to High AND reduced the cloud shadows from 512 down to 256. Now im back on a performance level that suits my flying. Furthermore i reduced the cloud size to .63. Anyway i still have the spinning clouds as im using wide view+EZDOK+TrackIR. The spinning cloud effect can be reduce by NOT using TrackIR or at least it is more subtle. Im happy that the vertical clouds are gone. The solution what i have now is good and i like it. I think it is also a thing of what one is flying. I like to fly low and slow/fast and im staying always well below FL200. So spinning clouds are not that big of a deal. When it comes to video making then it is a different story when filming from the outside views. Thanks guys for your help and support. PS: im using ASN+REX4 (Soft Clouds too) OpusFSI EZDOK TrackIR in v2.4 Greetz MJ My youtube blog________________________Prepar3D v2.5/v3
January 4, 201511 yr Incredible : we're now working on Cloud Simulator after we had Wave Simulator. If someone only visits the P3D forum once a week he will miss all these tweaks. Hopefully LM will read this too and use some of them in v2.5 , instead us tweaking and tweaking and tweaking....pffff 5950x3d 5.4-5.7 GHz - Asus ROG 870 Crosshair Apex - GSkill Neo 2x 24 Gb 6000 mhz / cas 26 - MSI RTX 5090 Gaming Trio OC - 1x SSD M2 6000 2TB - 1x SSD M2 2800/1800 1Tb - Corsair 5400 case - Corsair 360 liquid cooling set - 3x 75’ TCL tv. 13600 6 cores @ 5.1 GHz / 8 cores @ 4.0 GHz (hypterthreading on) - Asus ROG Strix Gaming D - GSkill Trident 4x Gb 3200 MHz cas 15 - Asus TUF RTX 4080 16 Gb - 1x SSD M2 2800/1800 2TB - 2x Sata 600 SSD 500 Mb - Corsair D4000 Airflow case - NXT Krajen Z63 AIO liquide cooling - FOV : 200 degrees My flightsim vids : https://www.youtube.com/user/fswidesim/videos?shelf_id=0&sort=dd&view=0
January 4, 201511 yr Hopefully LM will read this too and use some of them in v2.5 , instead us tweaking and tweaking and tweaking....pffff As you can see Gerard, there is a wide opinion of what looks good and doesn't look good. So if LM made these "tweaks" available in the user interface so folks can adjust to meet their desires/performance goals ... aren't they still just "tweaks" with the only difference being one edits a file and the other one moves slider in the P3D user interface ... both still "tweaks" and accomplish the same task? IMHO (and mine only), I'd like to see all these adjustments made available in the user interface (reduces possibility of end user errors) ... HDR, Waves, Clouds, etc. ... just too much variance in opinion of what looks good. Cheers, Rob.

January 5, 201511 yr Any modification that is based on changing shader source code couldn't be done on the fly within P3D unless the app was substantially rewritten.
January 5, 201511 yr Any modification that is based on changing shader source code couldn't be done on the fly within P3D unless the app was substantially rewritten. Actually I think it can, just need to trigger a rebuild and "I think" this already happens in certain situations (options changes). Tess is the only one I know that I think requires an application restart. Cheers, Rob.
January 5, 201511 yr I was going to create a similar topic a couple of weeks ago, but holiday family time had priority so thanks to the OP for raising the issue and posting photos. I, too, run ASN and REX4 in P3D, and have been extremely disappointed in the cotton-ball clouds. My clouds were STUNNING in FSX, so it was a real let-down when I moved to P3D. I will perform some of the tweaks provided in this thread and report back. In the meantime, I hope that LM can find a solution to easily recreate the glorious cloud coverage rendered in FSX with REX4 + ASN. Thanks everyone! Aaron Aaron Thacker
January 5, 201511 yr Actually I think it can, just need to trigger a rebuild In that case, they should add an Advanced Settings dialog box.
January 5, 201511 yr (and mine only) Not yours only. I for one would welcome the ability to make these types of graphical adjustments from within the application. Testing (or fine tuning to personal taste) could be done much quicker/easier and on the fly so to speak. Ryan
January 5, 201511 yr In that case, they should add an Advanced Settings dialog box. Yes agree with this and what has been said by Rob etc. The more control the better as far as I'm concerned. I actually like to tweak my sim, though I would rather not have to do it via text files, with trial and error. If LM can't or won't then maybe others can create apps like FSWC SHADE etc. to give users more control, with a more intuitive interface. I don't have an issue with having to restart the sim to affect changes; there are some things that can't be done on the fly.
January 6, 201511 yr Hi, Here are some nice screenies: Norway somewhere near Tromso, Spring, Midday REX4 Tx Direct: Community Theme MCA_January_Winter_1 (1/1/2015) REX Soft Clouds: Set 16 P3D: ORBX Weather 6 0.7 Tweak in cloud.fx Mike
January 6, 201511 yr FYI, I did mention something similar to Wes B. (LM) some time ago, but I believe they were reluctant to provide so much "easy" flexibility ... something along the lines of those that turn all the sliders to max and then go "how come ..." (I run out of memory, I get 2 fps, etc. ... ) I know we can already do this "as is", but I can understand LM's view to not make it even more of an issue. Cheers, Rob. EDIT: nice shots Mike ... do you get any strange "thinning" of clouds the more north one travels? For some reason as I get closer to Tromso my clouds (cumulus) get thinner and taller. This is specific to v2.4 or recent cloud fix ... I've had this odd behavior in prior versions of P3D.

Hi Rob, Thanks very much. When you say "thinning" do you mean less dense or physically thinner? Do you have to fly through or above the clouds to notice this effect? I'll investigate and report back later today. Regards, Mike
January 6, 201511 yr Moderator Rob - can't find the link but IIRC,. Kostas of HiFiTechnologies mentioned that it's specific to how the FSX/P3D engine handles clouds as you approach the poles. Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
