Poll: Glass or Steam?

Featured Replies

I wonder how many of you prefer automatics and glass cockpits over traditional hand flying and radio navigation on 'steam gauges'.Maybe some of you are so kind to answer these questions:1. I use modern glass cockpit avionics (YES|NO)2. I use the autopilot extensively (YES|NO)3. I do autolands (YES|NO)4. I follow the magenta route by hand (GPS or FMS generated) (YES|NO)Note: please answer YES if the phrase is true in more than 75% of all cases.Thank you.Andreas

No to all four. My Stearman and Cub didn't come with a FMC :(

No to all 4, which is opposite from what I have done in the past. It was the purchase of Misty Fjords and flying VFR again, that got me out of the "automated flying" style.

I'll take a Garmin 1000 glass panel --- over steam gaugesNothing beats a two-axis auto pilot coupled to the GPS to fly the 400 miles enroute to the scenic area for "hand flying" (GA airplanes). This is real life, but it's run over into the sim also. L.Adamson

1. NO2. NO3. NO4. NO:)Mike

i use the A/P in cruise, and navigate by VOR or INS,no magenta lines in my cockpit :)i do sometimes fly the PSS airbus, then it's yes to 1-3 and no to 4.tataJP.

NYNNR-

1) no2) yes3) no4) noI do fly the PMDG 737 with these features when I get a chance. Most of my time is spent flying either GA aircraft, the DF 727, or the PMDG 1900 C & D. I do use autopilot extensively during cruise, but climb, descent and landings are almost always manually flown.

YYNNBut I have to say I like what I personally call "digilogue" glass displays - where the display is digital but still uses analogue representation. For example I like to see needles move on the altimeter & airspeed instead of a scrolling-tape display.Best shown by pics!I prefer this:http://www.simpits.org/database/graphics/7...737_cap_pfd.jpgBut not this:http://www.b737.org.uk/pfd.jpg

No to all 4 for me!Scott

No to all 4

1) No2) No3) No4) NoOn 2, I use it occasionally, but not more than 75%.In Real Life, It's hard to follow the magenta line on the sectional, as I always seem to be just outside the airspace. :-lolRegards,Joeaopa.gif" border="0" alt="Grab My FREEWARE Voice recognition Profiles here:[a href=http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=fs2004misc&DLID=58334]Cessna 172 Voice Profile[/a][a href=http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=fs2004misc&DLID=60740]FSD Avanti Voice Profile[/a].You will need the main FREEWARE Flight Assistant program to use it, get it here:[a href=http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=genutils&DLID=39661]Flight Assistant 2.2[/a]
