Outerra development news

Featured Replies

So, hopefully in the next update we have dynamic weather (rain, etc) and global rivers and streams. (Youtube compression makes it very hard to see the rain)

Meanwhile, as the developers tweak the update, even they find some interesting surprises in how Outerra handles the data. The look of a small stream imported from OSM, for instance.

Incredible!

Flying gliders since 1980

Flightsimming since 1992

AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)

Looks very cool! I hope they can find a way to have updated nvidia drivers without making those purple textures shows up :(

Nvidia have acknowledged the issue with their drivers and have promised a fix.

That stream looks great. Have there been any recent, concrete moves towards a commercial-level sim? I've seen lots of what look like exciting baby-steps but...

It's not really a yes or no answer. Outerra is creating an engine that can be used for a lot of things including a flight sim. I believe they would like to make one, with a partner, but will end up making their own only (I suspect) as a result of related requests by their commercial partners.

For instance, their various military partners would want the ability to simulate aircraft, and so Outerra would provide that capability and its supporting systems. That would also of necessity include airports, navaids and on and on. This is already happening, and the devs are also actively working with independent modders within the Outerra community in providing asked for features to push things forward.

It's an organic process that could probably be helped by more energetic support by simmers and programmers. For instance, I can't wait to see what Tonywob might be able to do with their Osm.

Right now, perhaps the biggest ongoing aviation themed project is the Apache helicopter and its related systems. Look for that as a significant milestone. http://forum.outerra.com/index.php?topic=3253.0

Once the detailed systems become available, I see the floodgates opening for more Flightgear alumni to work in detail on Outerra as it uses the same open source JSBSIM flight model as that sim.

Thanks for the updates. That shot with the stream is fantastic and shows how good this engine will be (I just wish it was moving forward more quickly).

I see what you mean. This is not to denigrate the work which has been done so far and your own good (and potentially important) work in spreading the word, but given that eight years into development Outerra still only has a small team serving a handful of military contractors, and any movement towards wider development still needs "more energetic support by [volunteer] simmers and programmers", I would be inclined to take your answer to my question as more no than yes.

Having said that I know one small improvement has the potential to be a tipping point creating real momentum, and wouldn't be at all surprised if Tony's OSM work became that tipping point.

Fair enough. From my own perspective I think that of all the things Outerra might become, the highest impetus by far is towards some type of flight sim.

I suspect it will be the finalization of the api for glass cockpit displays (which they are working on) as well as clickable cockpits (in active development) and extended controls (completed)

This is what the developers have said:

Right now it's mostly a matter of getting the sufficient funds for the development of a simulator, to create a dedicated team for it. Classic investors are avoiding it, possibly for the same reasons Microsoft pulled out - low gains, and in case of other smaller teams without much marketing power also high risks, relatively small and conservative user base that already invested a lot into addons for old FS and will wait with support, and so on.

Crowd funding is an option, but the same problems remain. It's generally understood that an unproven developer can't get over 400k on Kickstarter, but that's just a fraction of the development costs, while the user expectations are high. A barebone simulator that needs lots of extra addons probably won't get even there. On the other hand, there seems to be a lot of smaller indie developers willing to work with us, providing the content, so that may be the way for the project.

In any case, with few other options I guess we can only try, but it's clear that the presentation for the crowdfunding campaign must be prepared extremely well. That's what we are doing, or going towards - developing the necessary functionality so that we can show something working for all major areas, but not going into much specifics that would be subject of post-funding development.

And we are going to aim for a combined aircraft/rails/trucks/watercraft/spacecraft simulator platform, not just to widen the potential user base but also because it's possible to do with OT and will be great smiley.gif

As mentioned before, Nvidia was aware that their drivers were broken, and today they released a fix. Outerra is no longer purple!

Which fix? Where?

I got the latest 362.00 now, according to GeForce Experience

  • separate river editor tab, working road/river node selector
  • updated terrain textures
  • fractalized rock slope, grass distribution
  • added crater rim erosion, adjusted forest depth removal
