Actually the compressed earth size might be just the thing for some projects: Euro Truck Simulator World!!

Someone asked if the same process could be applied the other way, and it seems to work. Brano managed to get a planet earth 16 times larger than the original one. Obviously, like the 16 times smaller version, the global topography is changed, but the terrain is not broken. In the following screenshot, you can see how the terrain look flatten and how the earth curvature seems different, even at this altitude :

Hard to assess the size from the screenshots alone, other than from where the haze occurs (at 100km) and the curvature not visible until much higher than usually. It can be felt in motion, even at high altitude it's like you were flying over a huge plane and not a sphere. Its surface is 256 times larger than current Earth's landmass.

Interestingly, the size of this world is now bigger than the surface area of Minecraft up to its usable limit (~30,000km until you hit precision problems).

Some more news:

We are aiming for a summer release a new version with completely reworked sandbox editor, making it much more usable and extensible. Pasto is promising a video for this week showing the upcoming sandbox functionality. Also including a better object browser.

Apart from that various functionality bits in vehicles and aircraft, including a way to attach and fire rockets and projectiles. Hopefully also a new configuration UI for controls will be completed with that, allowing us to finally release the extended controls.

First demo of the new editor (by pasto):

Basically what has been done so far:

- new UI framework to render dialogs (Javascript)
- sketch API to draw lines, images (C++)
- new 3D scene widget framework (Javascript)
- new camera controller to better suite the editing needs (non-linear zoom, smooth transition between different panning modes for different zoom levels, automatic / manual focus point)
- basic select / multiselect
- cursor showing elevation, distance, current axes
- camera / environment / time settings
- new entity / object browser with possibility to place objects
- object move operation with basic snapping (protractor / compass), cloning
- 3 different operating modes (copy terrain elevation / keep the sea level / align with object axis)

We have also migrated some of the dialogs to the new UI framework:

- location browser (already released)
- fbx importer
- object browser
- key binding editor

As there is still quite some work to be done to have all the functionality of the old UI, we will release the new sand box as a WIP in parallel to the old sand box. We would like to do it as soon as we have it stable, hopefully within next 1-2 weeks.

I don't need to explain how much it is an improvement compared to the old one. More scenery fun soon :D

All very cool stuff!
