Is this the dumbest idea of all time for aviation?

Featured Replies

Spring Airlines, a budget carrier in China, wants to offer fares to passengers who agree to stand. Fair enough, if it's a short hop. I wouldn't want to stand for 15 hours, but that's just me. I think Michael O'Leary from Ryan Air takes the cake with what is quite possibly the most mind-numbingly stupid idea ever for aviation. O'Leary said that seat belts aren't necessary because - according to him - they won't save you in a crash. He wants to get rid of them, apparently. I guess he must have been dropped on his head as an infant more than once, because he should've realised seat belts WILL save you when the aircraft encounters turbulence - something buses and trains don't deal with. Also, it'll stop you being thrown out of your seat on landing when the pilot hits the brakes and thrust reversers! Back to running Ryan Air badly, Michael...

I think you give the story way too much weight. It is just an advertising gimmick or perhaps a way to draw attention to one's brand, no aviation agency is about to approve such idea. If you read for example Spring Airlines statement they even say - we will offer it provided aircraft manufacturer approves it, regulatory agency approves it, public demands it, etc.,etc.,etc.

+ 1 , it's always been a tactic of RyanAir to promote something like this.

In their eyes, no news is bad news, so anything that gets the media attention (apart from crashes), is good.

Beech Baron: Uh, Tower, verify you want me to taxi in front of the 747?
ATC: Yeah, it's OK. He's not hungry.

You can safely transport people standing on aircraft by using the same technology used on Stand-Up Rollercoasters, but yes extremely uncomfortable as a Rollercoaster only lasts under 5 minutes

I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me

The words "won't save you in a crash" should never escape the lips of an airline CEO.

Just remember that idiots like this Ryan Air guy are also making critical decisions on maintenance policies, crew training and hiring policies, aircraft rental policies, and on and on. Takes me back to the tragic loss of an MD 80 near LAX when the horizontal stabilizer actuation system failed due to poor/unaccomplished maintenance by an out sourced company. These idiots make decisions every day that may threaten the lives of passengers and crew alike.

Except that he seems to be running it very well, and is a master at generating publicity.

> The Irish airline said traffic for the three months to 30 March was expected to rise by 25%, while falling oil prices would cut costs by 5%.

It increased guidance for full-year net profits from between €810m and €830m to a range of €840m to €850m.

Seems like they have quite a nice fleet, probably younger aircraft than most carriers. nice livery too.
