 Oooh.  That sounds so much easier,  i went all out and got 4 drives each with there own specific job, OS, Sim drive, storage and so on 

 

Here comes the Newby Question:

 

By running your OS and flight Sim on the same drive, is it not very taxing for the drive. as in does it put the drive under a lot of pressure doing all them tasks together.   In my very amature way i thought to have dedicated drives to easy the traffic.

Ssd saves time when loading.

 

Also, with allot of 3rd party addons your install may grow larger than you think. If u have limited space initially, you can easily grow without having to fully reinstall. Just transfer files from old to new.

 

On a totally different physical, FAST drive than your boot directory. Mine....on an SSD I:\P3dV2

Not an issue with the SSD. Technically could be an issue with an HDD especially if the OS gets busy doing background tasks. Then the heads are moving all over the place and this could affect performance, how much would depend on a lot of factors. Usually can show up as stutters when drive is busy.

 

Would your HDD dies sooner? Probably but so will your CPU when you overclock it.

Not really that big of a deal.

Becomes more of an issue with SSD if you're recording 4K content and have a lot of 3rd party content ... need some fast SSDs and/or M.2 or NVMe SSDs dedicated.

 

P3D does A LOT of it's own scenery file disk trashing looking at files that seem completely unrelated to one's flight and location.  I hope LM optimize this in V3.0 as it's crazy how much file IO is currently happening in P3D when you start adding screnery, airports, and aircraft.

Oops! Fixed that boo-boo. It's 2TB of course! :blush:

Should work in any folder you listed, some add-ons don't like it being located under C:\Program Files (x86) because of security restriction associated with the folder.

Leave it to install to the default location, and before installing addons set the required permissions...

What? I didn't understand

As Rob quite rightly points out, some addons install files in the simulator program files folder. If the simulator is installed in the default location, those files will be read-only. Some addons need to write to files located there when the sim is running.

 

When we log into Windows we become a member of the Users group.

 

If we only have a drive C, the easiest way to install P3D is to let it install where the manufacturer intended, which will be in the program files folder for security purposes.

 

However we want to ensure those addons can write to their files, so we very simply add Write and Modify permissions to the Users Group on the folder properties. See the image I posted above.

No. If we make a new folder for the installation, we find that inherits the permissions of the User (us), the Users group does not have access, we also add Write and Modify permissions for the Users group on that new folder. If we change users or create a new profile or log in from a network PC we can get problems leading to taking ownership, running as admin, etc.

Good idea, nothing wrong with that. Same goes for the folders we allocate on those drives, make sure they belong to the Users group by adding those permissions.

Indeed. Same as the best place to locate FSX or any other sim:  On a totally, physically, different drive.  And if the SSD price is prohibitive for you get an HDD with as big a cache as you can afford.
