ATI Shimmer

Featured Replies

I'm with JR... I dropped the 2 files into the fs9 folder and the shimmering on autogen trees and buildings stopped with no change in settings - really nice! The reason I took the files out of the fs9 folder is because in 2D view only, the water textures looked terrible.X 850 XT PETried Cat 5.8, Cat 5.9 & Omega 5.9 - no changeUse Ultimate Terrain which changes the water texturesAny ideas would be appreciated.JR - let me and others know if you find a fixThanks,Paul

Hi Paul, water textures also change in default water textures. I took the 2 files out for the same reason. Only with 2D panels. For me also no difference between 5.8 and 5.9 drivers on my ATI X800 videocard. Does nobody has idea how to fix this?Herman

These dlls caused endless CTDs for me with ntdll.dll errors :(FS9 is all good now that I have gotten rid of them. Also I did not notice any shimmer reduction....wot a pity!

okay fellow simmers, before you jump to conclusions;the new X1K from ATI supports HW Super Sampling, which was implemented in the new Catalyst 5.9 drivers, however not visible in the control center menu as an option YET.IF you wan to enable that option all you have to do is open the registry and search for "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentcontrolsetcontrolvideo{197E6108-6DA7-408C-9239-D4FD85D664A9}0000" then set the DWORD "ASTT_NA" to 0(there may be multiple entries because of past driver installs, but only one is active, to be sure set them all)This will enable the option "Adaptive anti-aliasing" in the Catalyst Control Panel, under "Temporal anti-aliasing".You may have to add the DWORD "ASTT" and set its string to 1, but in my case it was done automatically (ASTT with binary data set to "31 00", which corresponds to 1.This will drastically improve your screen quality and remove shimmers completely, however there is an impact on fps, so use wisely.See the screenshot below and read the black help-balloon.Mind you, this is my mum's computer i'm currently on, so i can say for sure that it works on a radeon 9800 pro, and up, cause I have an X800XT PE ,but again - beware - there is a fps loss!cheers,Anthonyhttp://members.home.nl/vos69/ss.jpg

Me too!The shimmers went away almost completely, but water textures were impossible so I also removed them.Happy Flying:RTH

Ummmmm Interesting Anthony:Unfortunately, useing regedit under:"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentcontrolsetcontrolvideo"I do not find the line item: "{197E6108-6DA7-408C-9239-D4FD85D664A9}0000" then set the DWORD "ASTT_NA" to 0" listed.I am useing the 5.9 Catalyst on a 9800 Pro with the Control Center.Any idea why I do not have {197E6108-6DA7-408C-9239-D4FD85D664A9}Thanks:RTH

A huge thank you for this little gem. It works like dream on my machine......I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro.My eyes can at last enjoy FS9.Kindest regardsAlan

Sorry i didn't specify, but that key is specific for your system. There may be several there. Check them all, and find the DWORD "ASTT_NA", set them all to "0"best of luckAnthony

Thanks loads Anthony:Works like a charm and I see no strange modification to water at all. Everything looks normal. Increased my MipMap Quality to 8 and still see no shimmering with the exception of one single Alaskan AI Aircraft at KSEA. Don't know what its' problem was. I so far see little effect on frame rates too.I am surprised that there is no comment by others on this mod.Again Thanks for the info.RTH

So are you saying that you can add the reg hack and enable the adaptive AA instead of the adding the .dll to the FS9 folder, or in addition to adding the .dll?

Neil, get rid of the DXOverride files and use the reg hack as descibed. It works with the CCC and the Control Panel only version of the 5.9 drivers, however the ability to easily select Adaptive AA from the GUI is only available in the CCC version of the drivers.

Definitely! Please forgive me for butting in and making a reply, but it works great for me and does not have the water problems the dll files did.See my replies if that helps at all under rhodges. My thanks again to Anthony!Good luck and I hope you find something here that pleases you.RTH

Well, it was great as long as it lasted:KLWB is my home airport which is relatively remote. Shimmering was very near non-existant in that area. Water textures out of KSEA also remained good. With the registry mods recommended by Anthony, trees and other items definitely lost the shimmers, however; I am having increased shimmering in skylines with high rise buildings in the center of Seattle. Will make additional observations for a few days, but the perfect solution still seems to be hidding. I wonder if there is another, or more editing needed.Respectfully:RTH

wow, the registry tweak to enable that special Anti-aliasing did wonders!! Thank you! I can't set the mip map to 8 still, but at 4 it looks amazing!!!!
