4770K to 6700K?

I'm running a 4770k @ 4.2 with a 780gtx 3gig and it's still handling everything great. For me this combination is still fine.

What are your settings at? I guess with autogen turned down and low traffic it isn't much of an issue. But my cpu seemed to run better with 2.5 than with 3.

  • I went from an i2600k to a i6700k without changing the graphics card. It goes something like this for processing power: Raw overclock gain = 4.7/4.2 = 12% Design level CPU improvements = 10% DD4 RA

Not worth it.   Too much money for not enough benefit; hold off another 6-12 months. You can spend the same amount of money and get a bigger performance increase.   For reference, I went from a 46

Definitely agree with this. Price vs performance gains are negligible as far as I can tell. I'm sticking with my 4770K until it croaks.

Well I guess there's no harm in saying. It's from Malaysia. Not sure if it's known worldwide but nearly everyone in my country knows this quite well. Fortunately we now also get stock from coasta rica which is said to be much better.

Yes my temps reach a Max of 90+C at less than 1.20V and LLC 5. Thankfully though I get 4.2 ghz at 1.19V.

My 6700K is from Malaysia too. Batch L5378206.

I'll let you know how I get on when I build. But to be honest, I don't expect to have the issues you have. If you're getting 90+ at only a miniscule 1.20 volts, it sounds to me that you have other issues, not necessarily the IHS/die interface.

What sort of cooling do you have? Have you checked your cooler is mounted properly, proper application of thermal compound etc. Have you tried with LLC at auto?

I have played around with all the settings in the bios, checked the cooler and remounted it a 100 times. I am using a custom water cooling setup with a dual radiator and high static pressure fans attached. Reapplied mx4 a number of times as well. The only other factor I'm unsure about is the cooler itself. It was a LGA 775 socket cooler but it still fits perfectly on the 1150 socket with a adapter. I am still 80% sure it's the IHS though.

Nevertheless I just purchased the 6700K too and it's also from Malaysia. Maybe we can compare our results and see if it may really be something else like you say.

Also I will post the results from jumping from the 4770K if anyone is interested, although I do not expect it to be great either.

Here's my 4770K running at 4.5Ghz with no manual voltage tinkering running on the cheapest MB/Case combo I have ever built I ever built. Would like to see other models to see if mine is not one of the more common ones. No idea why I've had such luck!

it's a CPU-Z  snip. How do you embed pics again? I know I've done it before!

Thanks

You have a decent chip. The average for the 4770Ks seem to be around 4.4ghz. I think you may be able to get it to 4.6 with voltage at 1.3V

I see what you mean. I that case I too would be wondering about the IHS/Die TIM. But as you infer... maybe the adapter is dodgy?

Yes it will be great if we can compare results. It'll be a week or two before I can build though, still refurbishing my room.

I have to say, there are thousands of Malaysia chips out there, the vast majority seem okay. I'll do some research later regarding that.

Was offered a stupid deal on a 6700k, so have ordered the CPU, an MSI Z170A G43 Plus, and 8gb of Geil 3000mhz cl14 DDR4.  Should be here by the end of the week.

Don't like Asus boards, so was stuck between this and the Gigabyte Gaming K3

Re: my 4770k, NVidia 780gtx 3 gig.....Most all the sliders are near the full right. I tweak it sometimes depending on location. Max frames are set at 30. FPS ranges from mid to high teens in busy areas(but very smooth) to up against the 30 limit. With the smoothness I'm totally happy with these numbers. This is with p3dV3.1 on Win7-64. I've had this hardware since it hit the market a few years ago. I've found buying the most horsepower you can at the time gives the longest useful life. As good as the 4770k is I'd suggest the 6700k if it fits your budget. You'll be happier, longer.

It could be the case, I'll find out soon enough. In the process of upgrading but unfortunately I made the mistake of upgrading to Windows 10 and I don't want to get stuck with an inactivated windows after the upgrade.

I find it really hard to enjoy the game when fps drops to mid teens or high teens. Lowest I feel its smooth to me is maybe 20 fps. And even with sliders configured for complex aircraft I can't seem to get it to stay above that. Well anyway I have already made the purchase so I guess we will see how the 6700K performs.

Good choice. I just bought an MSI laptop with a 6820 and it works great.

I'm seldom in the teens with the 4770k but I'm fine with it as overall performance is so smooth. Do post your experiences with the 6700k.

Just got the system up and running. Will start with overclocking soon and try out P3D thereafter.

What don't you like about Asus boards? I was considering one for my next build as they seem to do particularly well in reviews.

I'm the exact opposite. Anything but MSI. Owned 4 MSI items and had to RMA each item at least twice within the warranty period.

Moral of the story is one man's meat is another man's poison.

That being said I have finally completed the entire "silicon valley" cycle (except for the lower cost/tier brands) with the newest addition being Asus. So far no problems and easy to use. Will let you know how the overclocking goes if you're interested.

Never had good luck with them in the past, only 2 DOA boards I've ever had were Asus.  TBH I swear by Gigabyte usually, but found the G43 at a stupidly cheap price and read an excellent review on it on overclockers
