May 6, 201610 yr Do 3rd party addons not 'break' when you install incremental versions of XP10? Sometimes. It depends on what the update contains and how it effects each addon. It's usually not a major issue.

May 6, 201610 yr When they do break, how quick is the community to respond with patching it? Erich, it's usually pretty quick. I can't remember the last time an update broke an addon. Maybe someone else can jump in.

I had to do that only once, due to a new bug introduced in the beta. You can even run the two versions next to each other, just copy the complete directory, and for Scenery, you just make a hotlink to the Custom Scenery folder, to avoid waisting disk space (and copy time).
May 6, 201610 yr I love X-plane backup and restore as everything is self contained in the X-plane Folder. No hidden registry entries, none of that DRM - Black Gauges alot of AC makers use. Just copy/move the folder to wherever you decide. Oh god, I hope PMDG won't try and use any of their screwy DRM methods and break the flow of things. Most payware aircraft and utilities are a simple copy/paste to transfer to a new computer, but there are a few add-on companies that use DRM. Mainly X-Aviation and a couple of others. When I transferred X-Plane to a new computer a few months ago, I had to re-authorize a few things with username and password, like SkyMaxx Pro, the LES DC-3, the X-Aviation MU-2, and RW Designs Twin Otter. All excellent models and utilities, where I didn't mind having to go through the process if helps those developers stay in business. I know it's a contentious subject. I don't know what PMDG plans to do, but I guess we'll see soon when they roll out the DC-6. I wouldn't be too surprised if it's a DRM installer. May 6, 201610 yr Commercial Member Do 3rd party addons not 'break' when you install incremental versions of XP10? When they do break, how quick is the community to respond with patching it? The existence of a lengthy (and optional*) public beta process, along with good communication between addon developers and the XP development team tends to mitigate issues before they become serious problems. People get a chance to try out the public betas and report serious bugs, and addon developers get a chance to address potential required changes, before anything hits official release. In addition, there is a lot of openness into what features and changes are coming in an imminent release, so by the time the betas arrive everyone pretty much knows what to expect, and addon devs know if something's coming that's even going to impact them. I personally found it to be a refreshing difference from the P3D ecosystem. * The option to opt into any public betas are not available if you use/own X-Plane through Steam. I'm a Steam advocate, and I appreciate being able to one-click install and manage my games (100's of 'em) through Steam. The unavailability of the betas don't bother me in the least, but it would for some and needs to be pointed out. Jim Stewart Milviz Person.
May 9, 201610 yr Wow, as a new XP user, I must say, that XPlane is getting more and more interesting, I love the approach it is heading. May 9, 201610 yr Probably features like seasonal textures and a more comprehensive weather model will have to wait for X-Plane 11. In the list of fixes / upgrades are also better ground physics, better modeling of prop effects... Creating a good aircraft model for X-plane will nonetheless always be a much more complx task, in as far as flight dynamics goes, than for FSX ( if good flight data is available ). I used a very nice add-on recently, a Bf109 G-2. Got interested in the approach followed by the author, suggested some fine tuning and fixes which actually made it's way into the first patch, and I was continuing to "work" on that model, having as a base of comparison the K-4 in DCS and the G-2 in il-2 BoS. It proved to me, at least, that with carefull work, even using just Plane Maker, a plausible FDM can be built. Of course for systems modelling beyond what is available ( already a lot of things can be done from there ) through Plane-Maker, some sort of scripting or C programming is required, It was a good exercise :-) Flying gliders since 1980 Flightsimming since 1992 AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)
