Microsoft voices in P2A

Featured Replies

Yeah, I reckon I'll go back to the original voices for a while and add them gradually, cheers Dave

Indeed, and it's actually quite simple:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5KKop0TVnI&t=407s

I installed a few voice using this method.

That's a video by Bob Black.  Here's Bob's solution, in text form.  I've had the same partial success as others:  the voices work great in P2A, but not in the random pool.  Non-English voices do speak English, with an appropriate accent, adds realism for flights outside the USA.

In brief: Install a new voice.  Copy the voice's registry key,
from  HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Speech_OneCore\Voices\Tokens\
to  HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Speech\Voices\Tokens\.
Restart P2A.

Bob's procedure:

  1. Windows 10: Start>Settings>Time & Language>Language: Add a language.
  2. Type the name of a language.  (If you type something other than English, the controller will still speak English, but with an accent.)
  3. Choose a language that has a speech balloon icon (text-to-speech), and install it.  (Bob's video says you need the microphone icon (speech recognition).  That doesn't seem to be the case; it's the speech balloon you need.)
  4. Get the voice's nationality and name from the registryyou should know how to use the registry editor if you're going to do this. If you don't know yet, it's worth learning.  The risks are over-stated, but do be careful!
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Speech_OneCore\Voices\Tokens\
    Names like, e.g., MSTTS_V110_frCA_
    ClaudeM for French Canadian.
  5. Export the MSTTS… key to, e.g., frCAClaude.reg, in some handy folder.
  6. Open that folder in File Explorer.  Right-click and edit the .reg file in Notepad, Notepad++, or your favorite code editor.  (Double-clicking will by default re-import it, don't do that yet.)
  7. In the text editor, change the key name to remove the "_OneCore" string. Should be two places, change'em both.  Save the file.
  8. Doubleclick the file (or Open With: Regedit), and approve merging it into the registry.
  9. Restart Pilot2ATC (since this takes a while, do several at a time, once you get the first one working.)
  10. P2A: Config, Voices tab, assign the new voices to controllers.  Haven't figured out how to make them work as members of the random pool.

Does anyone know of the x-atc chatter works with Pilot2ATC for MSFS 2020? I only see references to X-Plane.

Thanks

Woodstock327, Thanks a bunch. Just got it installed. Looking forward to using the it.

Hi,

in case you are (like I was) struggling with deploying more of those mobile voices into the registry I have created a small script to aid in this.

It will just browse through the ones that are installed (and can be converted into a voice that works with P2ATC) and create the registry keys accordingly.

You can find it here: CopyTTSVoices.ps1 (github.com)

Have fun! 🙂

I have same issue. Did you find out what went wrong? I fallowed the guide step by step...

Solution: Make sure to access text to speech settings via control panel vs start menu. Apparently they have a different set of settings...

It's actually for the voices that come with additional Windows language packs; I have no idea if it will work for Polly 🙂

I tested Amazon POLLY and voices are compatible with P2A.

If others are interrested, I have "just" follow the next procedure :

https://docs.aws.amazon.com/polly/latest/dg/install-voice-plugin2.html

It is not free :https://aws.amazon.com/fr/polly/pricing/

4$ by million character

I was able to install Polly voices through the guide provided - thank you for that. I am also able to verify that they are installed properly, as they're reading the sample text in the Control Panel window. However, when i select these voices via P2A i get nothing. No sound, no error, just nothing. All other Microsoft voices are reading sample text fine in the application, but the AWS ones just return no sound whatsoever (at full volume and all that). Any ideas on what i'm doing wrong?

For some reason, Polly voices only work <50% of the time. I have tried to find out why but there is nothing shown in the P2A or Windows logs - maybe @Dave-Pilot2ATC could shed some light on it?

The good news is, if you restart P2A (multiple times, if required) it will eventually work - and will then stay working for the whole session. Therefore, the first thing I do when I start P2A is go to Config>Voices and click Test on one of the POlly assigned controllers. If it works, I carry on as usual. If not, I restart P2A and repeat until it works. (Note: I only test with the manually assigned controllers. I do NOT test with the randomly assigned ones at the bottom of the panel, as they require an active connection to the sim).

I can also confirm that Polly voices won’t always load. Multiple tries required… probably software needs an update or Polly can’t be reliably used with this software. Once loaded sometimes they’re good for a whole flight, others they just stop talking or won’t indicate TOD. Sometimes I’ll get an error during cruise, that usually will freeze p2a as well. I was forced to restart the process few times. Very buggy. Luckily, I experienced all this on my trail period. I will definitely get a license once this is sorted out and working smooth.
