9900K/9700K Overclock performance review

Multi-core is important for P3D but Cinebench R15 single/multithread isn't a great emulation of how P3D works … what cause long frames (aka stutters) isn't entirely CPU based, it's overall system throughput from CPU to RAM to GPU to VRAM.  It's always about balance.

I see the 7900X has dropped in price $896 … but I'm hoping the "man from the west" is correct and I can get 5.5Ghz HT off on my setup … and I'm assuming that's 5.5, 5.5, 5.3, 5.3, 5.2, 5.2, 5.2, 5.2  where my current 7900X on water only is 5.0, 5.0, 4.8, 4.9, 5.0, 4.8, 4.8, 4.9, 5.0, 4.9.

Cheers, Rob.

I'm still trying to wrap my little mind around the juice needed to power P3d on a 9900k at 5.5 Ghz.

As far as secret sauce with this 5.2 over my previous 5.2, it was all about current ...and lots of it. "Slamm'n" just slammed the vrm with his bios settings, but I like the results and will keep it. 🙂.

So yesterday I dumped the 24 hr 7 day a week 5.0GHz BIOS preset (made by de8auer, a well-known German competitive benchmarking/overclocking champ), and got rid of my 4133 MHz RAM configuration.  Looking to try something new, I switched to Slamm's (a well-known Russian competitive benchmarking/overclocking champ) 5.1 GHz preset (these presets come programmed in the BIOS of the Asus Maximus Apex motherboards).  I'm smashing all my previous bench records, by a good margin. And the most relevant and important note ....The LAX approach feels like the SFO approach now ...pictures are coming.  Interesting thing here is the 5.2 GHz (52 core multiplier and 4700 MHz Cache/Uncore) config based on the de8auer 5.0 preset I used prior doesn't even close to the performance I'm getting at 5.2 GHz with Slamm's 5.1 GHz preset with a core mult of 52, cache speed 4800 MHz with RAM running at 3866 MHz and CAS 16 timings.  It's clear to me that Slamm magic comes from the VRM page in his bios setting .....the guy appears to be the electricity wizzard at the ROG lab.

Thanks for that - I read it three times and only had 1/2 an idea what he was talking about!

what i'm suggesting here is just enough juice may not be enough with P3D 4.3 ...especially in heavy power draw situations such as LAX with the PMDG and dynamic lighting.

Just had a bash with my 8700K after the latest BIOS update. Cinebench stable, all cores at 5.2 GHz at 1.40 volts. HT off. 79 degrees with an NH-D15S. Delided with Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut.

5.3 was no dice. Even at very high voltage. Tried 1.49 volts, but was too scared to try 1.5 volts. 😀

Real men operate a 1.7V … still waiting for someone to come up with a sustainable LN2 loop for the masses, that's the only way to really get Intel/AMD CPUs out of the stone age. 🙂

Cheers, Rob.

@FunknNastySo what's special/different in Slamm's VRM config?

Ha... I guess I'm a girly man. 1.52 is max recommended according to Intel, but when my BIOS goes that scary red colour I run and hide. 😊Pleased with 5.2 GHz on air cooling though.

Now you've got me thinking, I might man up, pluck up courage and try up to 1.52 tomorrow and see if I can hit 5.3 GHz. Just for fun. I might need some kind of chemical courage booster first though.

I had a bash with Asus 5WO first. When I tried it a while back with an early BIOS for the code, it wasn't too hot. Barely reached 4.8 on all cores. But I'd experienced that before with five way optimisation, so was expecting something better with the latest BIOS. It did very well, 1 to 4 cores at 5 GHz and when the other two cores are active 4.7 with HT on. Low temps. Weird it overclocked per core when I'd set it to sync all cores but there you go. Nipped into the BIOS and synced all cores at 5 GHz with the other settings the same and all was well.

How big is the benefit from 6 Cores to 8 Cores with 5,2 Ghz?

As far as i read in most of the reviews 5,1 to 5,2 is the MAX for most of the 9900 CPU`s.  And even then they are somwere in the 90 - 100 Degrees range.

I´m currently surprised that with "normal" settings my old Compnay HP Elite Desk with a 4770 non K at 3,7 Ghz with 32 GB DDR3 and a GTX 1070 can keep up with 4K and delivers in the air 30 FPS steady and on the ground depending on where i am about  20  - 25 FPS. Even with addons like FlyTampa EHAM, GEP3D, Ultimate Traffic Live (60 %) UTX Europe, UTX USA, ....

Only when DL and heavy clouds are on the screen i have about 12 - 15 FPS but that should be solved with the 2080TI 🙂

I have a 9900K and a maximus XI Formula ( Watercooled VRM) and a 2080TI Sea Hawk in my shopping cart as soon as they are available.

But what i´m thinking about currently is: When a 5 Year old 4770 can keep up 30 FPS with reasonable frames and settings, does it make more sense to get a AMD 2950X with 16 Cores 32 Threads which are operating with 700 Mhz more and have more IPC then my old 4770, can use Quad Channel RAM has more CPU Lanes, more CPU Cache and costs nearly the same. hmmmmm

I`m ussing Intel since i´m flight simming ( about 15 Years) but maybee it`s time for change i don`t know.

So any input is welcome 🙂

Here you go:

Got one on order … as pointed out CO2 would probably be a better option, but dang that's a nice loop.  LN2 tanks are about $4000, didn't see what they are using to recover … where's the compressor and the like?  Cost of LN2 is pretty cheap anywhere from $0.50 to $2.00 gallon … but even in the best containment/recovery setups you lose about 2% per day.

Great idea, now if they could just make it more "for the masses".

Cheers, Rob.

I'm just wondering How de8auer is doing with his AIO Novec cooler.

Novec isn't sub-zero and thus doesn't really factor into this discussion, it just has a low (above-ambient) boiling point.
