Back to FS9

Recommended Posts

No, I'm not giving up P3Dv4.  I love it!  And two or three times a week I take my Quest Kodiak out for a stroll somewhere in the Orbx world.

But the lack of military aviation, aircraft and military AI, for P3D leaves an empty spot in my flight simming world.  As a retired Air Force member having worked on or been around everything from F-86s and B-57s to F-4s and F-105s I want the chance to fly them too.

So I opened the bottom drawer of my desk and dusted off and installed FS9 which will be the platform for all the wonderful military AI and military air bases available at MAIW.

I assume that eventually military aviation will catch up with P3D (in addition to the default fighters they have with no real bases to fly from or ai aircraft to keep them company) but I can't wait that long.  Last week, on Christmas day, I turned 85 and I really don't have the patience or time left to wait around for military aviation to catch up with P3D.

For those who have read some of my Marine Corps stories here let me clarify.  I was a Marine for 4 years before I switched over the Air Force for the next 22.

Hey, Noel...…didn't you pick up Rob Richarson's new Seafire for P3D?  Nice warbird!

Until I lost my old computer last year, which had FSX running well and FS9 running well, I enjoyed FS9 because I could flood the skies with real AI without any hit in performance and fps.  I had all the real AI I could muster for the US, Canada, Europe and Asia.  It was beautiful to be flying in the flight levels watching the contrails criss crossing under and above my flightpath on their way to exotic and not so exotic ports of call.  And I'd fly realtime to Europe out of JFK with AI just ahead and behind me hopping the ocean, with their lights to look at over the moonlit night reflecting on the Atlantic below, with light cumulus underneath.  My first real flight across the Atlantic was in 1977, almost exactly 50 years to the day that Lindburgh crossed.  My birthday shares Lindburgh's transatlantic crossing, we are birds of a feather, I have crossed the Atlantic eight times, last just after my birthday, last year, 90 years after Lindburgh's crossing and 40 years after my first crossing.

AI breathes life into FS9 and I envy those who still have it.  I was on the FS9 beta and my contribution was Soft Horizons, and I had help from Microsoft's team in making it.

A lot of FSX military aircraft work in P3D too Charlie.  The Virtavia C-17 comes to mind.  There are several others.  But P3D has no infrastructure to support them.  No detailed air bases and no military AI.  That's what I missed.

John, I have everything maxed out on my installation except mipmaps which I brought down to 4 to stop the shimmering.  I installed   My Traffic and set the traffic to 85% .  Taxing down the ramp at KSEA with 3/4th of the gates hosting airliners and a half dozen taxiing for tkeoff my framerate is a steady 60.

I'm still in the installation stage.  I have it set up and installed My Traffic and FSUIPC3 and little else so far.  Looking forward to a week of installing my aircraft and then  heading over to MAIW for the air bases and aircraft.

I went higher than you when I had my FS9, to 100 pct AI after I installed WOAI.  I deactivated the default AI, because I wanted to see real airlines in their proper places, it was so immersive and real even if FS9 was not as feature rich as FSX.

Have either of you guys tried out MAIW's new Matrix installer for P3d v4? They have done a ton of amazing work converting military AI models as well as creating new ones. The installer is awesome, it installs models, paints, plans and everything for you including some updated air bases.

Ever thought about trying DCS? Especially now that most modules are on sales. That is the go-to simulator regarding military planes.

Although I will probably not reinstall FS9 when I have to replace my computer, I still have FS9, together with a large amount of addons for it, installed on my system and I still enjoy using it from time to time.  As you say it is great to be able to fly smoothly even using some high demand addons with features like AI maxed out.

I know Flight simulation has now moved on but FS9, which arguably brought Flight simulation into a new era, still remains a very capable and thoroughly enjoyable flight simulator in its own right. Indeed the continued activity on the FS9 forum and the regular release of new freeware addons for that platform suggest that plenty of other simflyers continue to enjoy it.

It was definitely a classic!

1.) Happy Birthday, Noel

2.) thank you for your lifetime of service

3.) I had a very similar thought not too many days ago. I flip in and out of the need to do military flying, I go through moods with it but I agree. I fly the VRS Superbug and it just does not have the same vibe. I too hope that P3D catches up to the absolutely stable and amazing world that FS9 had.

Cheers out!

Ryan

I second this. I like what they've done with it.

Having been on its beta it is so great to still hear these things!

Thank you Ryan.

Someday P3D will catchup with military aviation.  But how long that will be is anyone's guess.

I drive a Toyota Prius, but if I could have an old MG-TD (I once had an MG) or Austin-Healy (I only dreamed of owning one) to tool around in from time to time I'd be delighted.  Why do we discard the old for the new?  Sometimes the old is worth keeping alongside the new just for fun.

If it weren't for all TV those stations that play old sitcoms like M*A*S*H and Andy Griffith I's spend a lot less time being entertained by my TV set.

I wish I had the old Ford Probe, just because of its looks.  My father rented one once on a business trip, he usually went for more basic cars but they upgraded him to the Probe.  He said he just loved it.  I was upgraded to a Dodge sports car once and loved it, and my company rented a Ford Mustang for my colleague and I so we could drive from Phoenix to Yuma and back on a business trip.  My colleague drove it and he zoomed us back home to Phoenix on I-8 in the desert winter.  One night in Yuma we crossed the Colorado to an Indian gaming casino and I won money for both of us, he said he was so happy he talked me in to tagging along.

Sue, Highway 30 is a popular route for Texans to take to Ruidoso.  Through Roswell it is also 2nf Street.  Several times I have seen a black Austin-Healy with Texas plates cruising up 2bd Street.  I always admire it.

Remember the Auto Crosses and sport car rallies of the 50s?  What ever happen to them?  And what ever happened to sport cars?  My brother had a Triumph and used to drive in Auto Crosses.  Back then shopping centers closed on Sunday the Auto Crosses were held in the parking lots.  Bygone days!
