Are “Professional” v4 only Airports really that different?

Hi Ray, when installing the JustSim scenery's I opted not to let the installer monkey with my scenery cfg file, and I just added it manually. Just a different way to skin the same cat I suppose...

I don't have Rhodes, but I do have EBBR, EDDL, and EDDH. I agree, not "breathtaking", but miles better than the default scenery, and they have SODE jetways, which you don't always find in 15 Euro scenery. All things considered, they are decent scenery's for the price IMHO.

FWIW, the dev is located in Montenegro, not that it matters, it's just not one of the usual geographical locations for developers that I associate with most of the add on's we use in P3D.

It created a single entry at the top of the list. Standard procedure really. They'll always be better than the default of course. Rhodes is one for the summer really but Brussels will be handy for quick hops across the North Sea. Maybe I should get the Vulcan and do some dry runs over EU HQ.

Can't take advantage of SODE at present as I patiently wait for Concorde. My Learjet isn't big enough for a gate to fit.

Just out of curiosity....does it actually matter if an entry is placed in the scenery.cfg file if the addon is installed outside the Lockheed Martin/Prepar3d v4 folder? If a reinstall is required, can't we just make a backup copy of the scenery.cfg file?

Something tells me that won't endear you to the anti brexit crowd down there...

I'm primarily a Tubeliner kind of guy, so the SODE jetways are a nice addition, and yeah, it's safe to say your Learjet aint' gonna fit...😁

In comparison Gary Summons of UK2000 gives you the choice of addon or scenery.cfg.

There should be no choice for P3D V4.x, Add-On method only should be used ... why give a user a choice without the user really understanding what that choice means.  Less is more when it comes to user interaction.

We'll only really know if an airport is truly P3D V4.4+ when we start to see PBR enabled airports and material scripting.  It will become VERY apparent the difference ... some of the previews I've seen are mind boggling good and without an FPS hit ... and I think people will start to appreciate the power of material scripting in V4.4+ ... i.e. taxi-ways and runways that will be truly look "wet" and then dry over time as the sun comes out and weather changes.  Watching snow accumulate on terminals, taxi-ways, runways, having GSX salt/snow truckers running up and down the runway and actually seeing the runway surface change.  ALL this can be done in V4.4+ and developers are working on exactly that ... and the work is NOT trivial ... it will really distinguish a "Pro" version of an airport and further distance P3D from any other platform.

Just wait a few months (March/April/May) and you'll see what I mean when products get released.  You'll happily pay whatever price the dev is asking for when you see the difference ... and no FPS overhead with material scripting as you would get from shader based processing.  Have patience and be "Prepar3d" ... hehe ... 2019 is gonna knock your socks off.

Cheers, Rob.

I believe that Flightbeam/Bill Womack's just released KPDX is using material scripting to simulate things like wet surfaces during wx events.  Haven't picked it up yet, but looking forward to seeing this.

Yep, I posted a video with it in action ... but that's just scratching the "surface" ... pun intended.  🙂

Thanks Rob.  I'll have to take a look.  Nice to know there's even more to come.

@Rob Ainscough, that sounds wonderful and more in line with what I would hope 64-bit would give us. Thanks for sharing that info. Exciting times. 😁👍

With regard to Addon versus scenery.cfg I agree but whilst it is fine for most airports I don’t see how it works when a strict layer rule needs using such as 3rd party global mesh which needs placing very precisely.

Or will we always have a scenery.cfg for those products with airports only using the Addon rule.

If every scenery were added using the Addon rules, the layering can be adjusted in addons.cfg similarly to how scenery.cfg works.

Aerosoft are charging a reasonable €7 for owners of Heathrow Xtreme to upgrade to Heathrow Professional.

Has anyone seen a decent boost in performance with the update or is it just a way of extracting money for very little?

I think you have answered to your own question.

Yes, but that area around EGLL even without any airport is a poor performer so don't expect miracles ... too many unique buildings in a single hot spot makes for many draw calls which = low FPS.

Thanks Rob. I think I may just setup a different profile in SimStarterNG for EGLL with lower settings and another with higher ones for all other airports.

It remains the worst performing area in P3D. Is Gary Summons UK2000 Heathrow any better?

No offense to Gary since I love his work, but the latest offerings from Aerosoft Heathrow performs better than Gary's version on my setup.

Cheers, Rob.
