Thank you again!

That is a lot of number to crunch. Maybe I am wrong but it seems that 8086K is like buying i7 that wins a silicon lottery, no?! I used to own i7 2700K and that beast I could overclock to 4.5 or even more with no penalty. This 6600K of mine is struggling to keep on 4.5, I have to play a lot with vcore.

I don't think I can justify getting 8086K at the moment, the price is just insane. Now, I am leaning more on 9700K and hopefully winning another silicon lottery.

Either cpu will run p3d like a charm.  The guys that claim that eight cores is of no benefit have not done a valid comparison.

I just built an ASUS Z390 TUF with 9700k and this thing is rock solid stable at 5.1Ghz.  I also updated my video card as well to a 2080.  This is coming from a 5820K with 1070.  My FPS stay constant in the 40-50 range using all Orbx regions with A2A, Rex Skyforce and AS16.  Bare in mind I am running 3x24 inch monitors at 5760x1080 with vsync enabled with most sliders set to max along with running 4SSG and 16AF.  Sim has never run better.  Thanks

5.1 on all cores? Temp and cooling?

My 9700K at 5.1 on all cores runs mid to high 70’s with a h110 AIO cooler.  This is in P3D under the highest loads I can create within the sim.

Yes on all cores using a Noctua DH-U14S and thermal grizzly Kryonaut compound.  I used AI Suite software by ASUS to over clock all cores.  I will let it record the temps while on full load running P3D, but it has been rock solid stable.  I am very impressed with this build so far.

Rob

Highest temps were at 72 when initially loading of scenario and then stayed in the 62-68 range during flight.  This was flying through Seattle in A2A C185 at 3000ft with 4096 textures and Skyforce with AS16 in very overcast weather.  My FPS did drop in the mid 20s, but I never adjusted any of my sliders to include traffic which is at 50%.  I also own every Orbx product for North America as well.  This scenario would have dropped my frames into single digits on my previous system.  Very impressed so far.  Thanks

Good old Noctua. 🙂 In fact there's a new version of the NH-D15 on the way that cools even better. Nice to see them still competing with AIO's.

I use Kryonaut too, and Conductonaut between die and IHS on my 8700K.

I've used Ai Suite in the past to overclock and found it pretty good. That was Five Way Optimisation. 5WO overclocks and stress tests multiple times, gradually increasing the overclock incrementally, the same way an experienced overclocker would..

In your case for Z390, that would be the new auto overclock version, called Ai Overclock. Different approach than 5WO. I believe you run a stress test prior, and the Ai Overclock estimates your max overclock.  It also monitors in real time and clocks back if the cooler becomes clogged with dust or the ambient temp changes. Smart prediction and thermal telemetry Asus call it.

Glad you are pleased with your build Rob. 🙂

Nice result Matt. Seems like a great CPU the 9700K. No HT which helps keep the temps down.

9700K hands down over the 8700K.  In complex scenery the 8 core processors will have better scenery loading.  I could easily saturate the cores of a 9600K in ORBX regions with complex airports.  I see no point going with a 6 core cpu.

That is absolutely right.  I see my own old 3930K w/ HT enabled getting fully slammed all 10 core the sim plays with.  If you're talking main thread 'fps' then not necessarily, but if you look at total performance including scenery loading (and with it reduction in microstutters) then absolutely 9700K looks better.  In fact, w/o testing I'm not sure if 9900K wouldn't be best by a slim margin, i.e. hyperthreaded.

Great thread.  I was looking at both processors for an upgrade.  So 9700K it is for me too.    Good post Hendrick

Edit:  for those overclocking the 9700K to 4.9...is it air cooled or water cooled?

I'm looking to upgrade to this board too

I went for 9700K and OC'ed to 5Ghz with Asus Strix Z390 F. 16Gb DDR4 2666 C15. I am using Corsair H100i.

I set my vcore to 1.325

my 9700K @ 4.9 is air cooled with a Noctua DH-U14S

I have build a P3D PC for a friend he was lucky 9700k AIO  5.2ghz 1.34v

retired my 8700k find one really good 9900k  first test 5ghz ht on with noctua D15 mid 50C vcore 1.10v then 1.28v 5.3ghz high 70C, shall put it on custom loop and HT off at 1.37-1.4v probaly 5.5ghz

@TrentXWBI got the 9700K (will  overclock to 4.9) and a Auros Z390 Pro Mobo.  I also got the H100.

In terms of software post the upgrade.  I have my P3D on a dedicated SSD, separate to my W10 boot /OS disk.  If I was to use the Microsoft Creators Edition installer to reinstall the core Windows 10 files and leave my apps (particularly P3D)and docs alone - would this work?

That way W10 can configure itself for the new hardware, without the fuss of me having to reinstall everything else.
