June 13, 20196 yr I'm considering upgrading to Windows 10. But it seems like it will wipe my C drive....which has a lot of P3D/addon related files. I will backup some of my other misc data but it seems like I'll need to do a clean reinstall of P3D. P3D is installed on another physical drive but has all those little "feelers" on the OS drive. If those are gone won't I need a complete reinstall? | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
June 13, 20196 yr Author Blah I'm just going to commit to the Win10 upgrade and maybe P3D needs a fresh install anyway (haven't done one in years)....here goes 10 hours of reinstalls lol | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
June 13, 20196 yr I've recently gone through a massive install following the purchase of a new PC. I do not envy you, best of luck. Paul Edwards
June 13, 20196 yr Microsoft strongly recommends a clean install or buying a new computer instead. That's exactly what they told me early this morning after turning my desktop PC on. June 13, 20196 yr IMO the best option is to do a clean install. But Ryan, you must know that older processors and other components might not be fully "compatible" with the latest Windows10 update. One of my older PC's (the one I'm using to write this post) cannot update to the latest windows 10 version. (A message pops up stating that this PC is not yet fully compatible with the latest Win10 update) Here are its specs. OS Name Microsoft Windows 10 Enterprise Version 10.0.17763 Build 17763 System Type x64-based PC Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770K CPU @ 3.50GHz, 3501 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s) BaseBoard Product DZ77GAL-70K As far as I can tell, this PC's is running some kind of "hybrid" OS as it has some features I have seen on later versions . My newer PC's are all on newer versions 1809 and 1903 Take that into consideration. Edited June 13, 20196 yr by RamonB Ramón. Time, is the one thing no one can buy.
June 13, 20196 yr To be brutally honest, I would go ugly early and rebuild Rome from scratch. You can easily spend far more than the time of a rebuild trying to sort out problems arising from an "upgrade" install, like Win 10 assigning different GUIDs to your control devices and screwing up your control assignments, or file system permission issues that prevent some software from being able to write or read files that it needs, or new network security protocols that interfere with networked apps, etc...all of which I've wrestled with before. I don't say that lightly, either...a complete system reinstall on my dedicated flight sim box takes me 60-80 man-hours as a minimum. June 13, 20196 yr Yup, I was forced to reinstall Win10 for a different game (Forza). I haven't flight sim'ed since; I'm not motivated enough to waste a whole weekend installing and configuring addons.
June 13, 20196 yr Author Ugh...back to reality ha! Maybe I don't have the time to commit to this right now. You guys brought up some point I didn't even think about so thanks! I did setup a win 10 USB stick for future though. June 30, 20196 yr I have avoided W10 for as long as I could this. week. With the end of 7 support fast approaching, I found a way to upgrade to W10 for free. I just ran the free upgrade program from MS, and everything works. I am also on the latest version of W10 with a 5 year old desktop. The only issue I had was I needed to reinstall the Majestic Q400, the controls were messed up after installing W10. I ran the install, and have 5 flawless flights with all my add on's running, and everything works perfectly. I am really surprised that I like W 10 now. Rather than rebuild the HD, clean install W10 and all my add ons, I would rather have surgery with no anesthetic. 😜
