The latest OrbX reaction to FS20 (hint : quite positive)

I expect there will be no backward compatibility, any more than there was with Microsoft Flight.

A great deal of FSX Scenery is compatible with MS Flight. And much can be translated to work.

At least Google covers a LOT more cities with photogrammetry, hell, even most cities/towns in Italy (at least the famous ones) are covered. With Bing Maps i can count them with one hand.

You must have a lot of fingers. I'm looking at the Windows 10 map app and there are a lot more than ten 3D cities. You comparing Google to MS doesn't really fit in with your argument. MS and Google are enormous giants in competition with each other on every front. Who is more likely to catch up or be closer to Google's map technology? MS or FTX? How long would it take for MS to add new cities? How long does it take OrbX to do the same thing?

Right now OrbX seems be spending a lot of time on even small and simple geographical areas (the Netherlands is tiny and flat) through with their new technology. And that's before taking integration with new sim and the likelihood that MS will stream most if not all of the globe through the sim into account.

Anyway, maybe you're right. That wouldn't be a bad thing; the more products the merrier. I've really enjoyed FTX on FSX. They capture the feel for different areas. But that doesn't mean MS can't come in and do the same thing via automation.

I believe this is due to Stonelance's efforts after Flight was cancelled.  I haven't kept up with it.

By what we have seen so far it's actually very likely it will become the number one sim.

Well you are incorrect on a number of factors.

For full resolution Ortho, it will be subscription based.

It will have to be. That stuff costs a fortune to license and to stream.

I have 10 states in the U.S of ZL16 (very low rez) and it takes up 600 GB of SSD space. Thats around one third of the U.S. So a very small section of the world ! And that's without overlays.

SSDs are expensive. My 870 Evo Plus nvme drives even more so.

It will either be expensive to store, or to stream.... whichever model you choose.

As for 'some way of doing seasons'.... yeah you can hope. As I said the only way is to process (see SimTiles) or use a filter.... even worse. It is not a great solution and is the main reason XP exclusive users are less rhan 20 percent of total simmers.

Also, this amount of graphical fidelity needs monster hardware to run well. Add in a PMDG 747m Ai traffic, a decent weather engine, and it will be a killer.

Hell, 20 percent of simmers still run FS2004 or FSX..   not everyone can spend 1509 quid on a PC.

You will hope and pray, but it will not become the No. 1 used sim for at least 5 or 6 years.

Look back in a couple of years, and check back with what I said in OP.

Don't worry, Ill remind you !

Anyhow, say, time will tell.

We know almost nothing about FS20 as a sim (wishful thinking from some teasers is not knowledge) and nothing at all about P3Dv5.  Predicting market shares at that point is certainly an interesting proposition...

Please don't post supposition as fact! If I'm wrong, please post the actual evidence for this in the new sim.

Ortho4Xp is a nasty hack. You are essentially flying over a giant jpeg file that is always loaded. These days 3D software loads the details you need at that moment. You get closer to an area and more detail is loaded.

I don't think you understood my message much.

Both Google Maps and Bing Maps have been with us by now for years. (Bing actually just turned 10 years old in June 2019). It's a matter of how much money they invested into those projects and what they focused on. If you check the Bing Maps blog also you'll see that their focus is still on american cities for the most part.
As for Italy, sure, some big italian cities are there. Others, while being decently big, are still missing. The smaller ones of course are missing. On Google Maps not only are the big cities covered, but even the middle ones are too.

This gap is exactly why Orbx will be able to still make sceneries for airports and regions or cities. Because Bing Maps data, which is apparently used by this new simulator, is inferior to what Google Maps offered and gives Orbx a chance which was much similar to what FSX/P3D had (some big cities are better represented, but airports and other areas are not).
Orbx coudn't cover the lack of details in FSX, nor P3D, and surely won't be able to in this new MSFS2020. However they will still manage to make products for it.

I hope you understood what i meant with my previous post now.

Well you are incorrect on a number of factors.

For full resolution Ortho, it will be subscription based. No it won’t, as previously discussed

It will have to be. That stuff costs a fortune to license and to stream. Why? How much does it cost you to stream google, apple or bing maps at the moment?

I have 10 states in the U.S of ZL16 (very low rez) and it takes up 600 GB of SSD space. Thats around one third of the U.S. So a very small section of the world ! And that's without overlays. Not relevant if it’s streaming it all.

SSDs are expensive. My 870 Evo Plus nvme drives even more so. Ibid

It will either be expensive to store, or to stream.... whichever model you choose. Again, why is it expensive for a small flight sim community to stream this stuff when it is free for the millions and millions of people who stream it for other reasons?

As for 'some way of doing seasons'.... yeah you can hope. As I said the only way is to process (see SimTiles) or use a filter.... even worse. It is not a great solution and is the main reason XP exclusive users are less rhan 20 percent of total simmers. No these aren the only ways to do it - even on this forum several modern techniques have been discussed including the use of advanced shaders, which seems the most likely. However, I am still unsure about this too until they actually confirm seasons are in the game.

Also, this amount of graphical fidelity needs monster hardware to run well. Add in a PMDG 747m Ai traffic, a decent weather engine, and it will be a killer. I disagree. In fact, I wouldn’t have thought this would need anything more powerful than other modern, aaa type games. Obviously there still needs to be a balance between realistic performance and user expectations, but that isn’t the sim’s fault.

Hell, 20 percent of simmers still run FS2004 or FSX..   not everyone can spend 1509 quid on a PC. What are you basing this on?

You will hope and pray, but it will not become the No. 1 used sim for at least 5 or 6 years. I don’t hope or pray for anything, but anyway I have zero interest in whether this is the leading sim or destroys other sims because I’m not 13.

Look back in a couple of years, and check back with what I said in OP.ok

Don't worry, Ill remind you ! Thanks
