  1. I think the r9 290 is the best price/ performance card there is right now
  2. i've just bought an r9 290 so will let you know how that performs (my cpu is an i5 3570k running at 4.2ghz) - most benchmarks put it slightly ahead of the gtx 780 (not the ti version!), which is pretty amazing considering it's about £100 cheaper.
  3. PMDG is an outlier though. By all accounts the flight simulation genre is on its arse, I won't blame developers for wanting to release things to market when they are good enough to start making them some money.
  4. I'm not angry with them in the slightest, they can do what they want. I am massively keen to throw my wallet at them at the next available opportunity though, I've not looked forward this much to something on a flight sim since x plane went 64bit
  5. I'm going to set fire to my computer if there's no news today
  6. I'd love that to be honest. Something that I don't already (roughly) know how to fly
  7. I don't have the ff777 but yeah fair enough if it doesn't have the electronic checklists. I love the whole start up sequence in the pmdg one
  8. I have the 737ngx and 777 but only the ff on x-plane. I can see the pmdg products are more polished (unsurprisingly) but I'm not able to tell the difference in the quality of systems modelling. I'm just not expert enough, which is why I was asking how people tell the difference, using examples.
  9. I read this EVERYWHERE, I'm even sure I saw it written on a toilet cubicle wall once. What is that makes people conclude that pmdg system modelling is slightly better than the other top tier type stuff? How do you even know? The main things I like about pmdg products are how well integrated everything is (e.g. Fuel and payload via the FMS) and it's brilliant failure system. I sure appreciate the systems modelling but you can paint me in red and call me Susan before I could tell you why it's better than the ff 757
  10. You can already buy a very good 777, and a 747-8i
  11. Really sticking your neck out with that one
  12. Quick VFR (ish) flight to Innsbruck using the newly released skymaxx pro v2
  13. It will automatically update to 10.30 when it's out of beta, if it's like the 100% of other games I have on there
  14. I think something anantech did showed that win7 has stronger dx9 performance than 8, about the same dx10 and win 8 has faster performance for dx11 (and probably for everything coming hence). I went from xp to OS X and then to win 8 a few years later so have no idea!
  15. I'm checking this page two or three times a day now :( need help
  16. Cool, I look forward to it. ASN made me (virtually) scared to go into clouds in a light aircraft because you never quite know what it's going to be like in there. The other main things I like about it are completely smooth transitions when the weather changes, no cloud popping, the ability to uplink winds aloft data to FMCs that support it and also the ability to tune to set radio frequencies to get en route live weather information as well as weather at your destination airport. If skymaxx v2 can get some of that in and isn't about making pretty skies (ASN comes with zero cloud textures after all!) I'll buy it. Oh one more useful thing I like about ASN is being able to 'search' live weather and fly somewhere with specific conditions. I've never used the historical data thing to be honest.
  17. It won't, pretty much. I think the only thing that has any effect in ccc is the supersampling setting - this comes with a reasonably hefty performance impact. Have you heard of radeon pro before? It's like a ccc on steroids and does actually have an effect on most games, including p3d. Use that to override aa settings and force v synch etc
  18. Good mesh does make a big difference, but I've only used it in the 'other' sim where pretty much the whole world is covered for free. I can't bring myself to spend the amount it costs for fsx/p3d. It makes a nice difference, but not 2-4 times the original cost of the game difference. IMHO
  19. You aren't looking properly then Seriously though, the question has a very wide scope. Flying with simheaven scenery and v2 mesh around Switzerland and with lua Raleigh scattering scripts and osm Europe buildings far surpasses anything you can achieve in fsx/ p3d. It's actual real Switzerland apart from anything else! The thing that's good about the orbx stuff is that the whole world is upgraded to a very good standard - if you did that with simheaven et al the xplane folder would probably be over a terabyte big
  20. Not really convinced by anything I've seen yet to be honest. Though I think my mind is being warped by spending a lot more time in xp10 at the moment where the level of graphics you can get for $0 (or whatever you want to donate) makes fsx and it's brethren look crap in comparison to be brutally honest. Makes me much more critical of things like this than I was in the past. Orbx are one of the few companies where I do think the money is just about worth it though to be fair.
  21. I don't know whether stock fsx does, but ASN does. Wake turbulence as well. Good question re whether x-plane is capable.
