No Icelake desktop until 2020 - proceed with new build?

Featured Replies

I was going to do a new build in January but with Ice lake rumors, I decided to hold off.

Now Intel is indicating that ice lake desktop chips won't be out until 2020. Some reports saying it could even be mid-2020 before they are out.

Opinions on proceeding with new build now?  The cycle is continuous but I figure I build now, then do an ice lake in about 2 years from now.

New build would be 9900K.

What do you have now? I've got a 6700k running @ 4.6. Upgraded my GPU to the 2080TI last year and other than having to keep a few CPU-intensive settings like autogen a little lower, I'm still happy with my performance and see no reason to upgrade at this time. I think I'll jump on Ice Lake next year. At that point my current CPU will be 5 years old and of course, I'll want the latest and greatest when FS2020 comes out.

P3D 4.3, Windows 10/64 bit, Intel 6700k @ 4.7 air-cooled, NVidia 2080 Ti Founders Edition, ASUS Rog Maximus VIII Ranger, 16GB G.Skill Ripjaws DDR4 @3200, Phanteks Anthoo Pro Series Case, Samsung 950 Pro M.2 500GB, Sandisk 1TB SATA, Seagate 2TB Hybrid Drive, Cooler Master 700W, 40-inch Samsung 4k TV

I've got a 6700k @ 4.5 with a GTX1080. I've had it for 3+ years now. Overall, it is a good build. Been really reliable. If I am going to spend anything, I am going to do a complete build and sell my existing to a friend so there would be an offset expense wise.

I have the same hardware and I'm getting good performance at 2560x1440 screen res. I see no reason to change at present - nothing I'm running on it is currently having any problems. Do you need a new system or just want one? I generally don't even consider a new build until my old system really starts to struggle with something I want to run.

Honestly I just want one. really enjoy the build process always nice to have a new look on my desk.

There will always be something mo'-faster-better on the drawing board for next year.

Moving from a quad-core 6700K at 4.5 to an 8-core 9900K at 5.0 is a good step up.  P3D makes good use of those extra cores.

Go for it.  I went from a 7700k at 5.2GHz to a 9900k at 5.0GHz.  In the vast majority of cases the 9900k has been superior.  Single-digit percentage performance difference in single-thread benchmarks doesn't really amount to much but the near 2x increase in multi-thread performance is observable.

Pulled the trigger. Will be building it this weekend.

The i9900KS due out soon will run all 8 cores at 5ghz Guru 3D shows a supposed 3D mark run, what it will OC to we will have to wait till the testers get them.
