September 8, 20196 yr Hey there, I'm learning to be familiar with different airspaces and I was wondering. On a commercial flight does the pilot have to check in with the new regions Control/ Center and say his altitude or does he not have to do that? P.S. I'm talking about long haul flights. Thanks, ~Taylor Edited September 8, 20196 yr by ribbyjon
September 8, 20196 yr All flights in controlled airspace (not just long haul), yes, you need to establish two way comms with the controlling sector. HTH Ian
September 9, 20196 yr Montreal Center, American Flight 643, with you, flight level Tree-Fife-Zero 😁 Good post OP. Gives me a chance to ask this question...Is "Tree" correct, or should one simply say "Three"? Do they still use "Niner", instead of "Nine"? September 10, 20196 yr Sorry if I have to make my font a bit bigger, have had vision issues since I just got out of the hospital recently. If you really want to get a great picture of ATC coms, both GA and otherwise, I highly recommend this site: https://www.liveatc.net/ I use it especially with AeroflyFS2 when I am not using P3D or Xplane, since AeroflyFS2 has no ATC comms. Not only does this site allow you to listen to tower feeds, you can also listen to ground, approach and departure, and especially Oceanic. The best time to enjoy Oceanic is about 0:00 UTC, also you can listen to airline maint to the pilots in command as well. I use this site to practice for a real training flight whenever I take one, because I have a very slow drawl, mix of many accents, and it has always caused me challenges with ATC. That is why I prefer my lessons in uncontrolled Airspace since I fly Microlight Fixed wing and ultralight trikes. Unicom is especially fun to listen to for that reason. Regards, John

I think the "with you" is a Flight Sim thing - maybe a real controller or more experienced pilot could weigh in ? I typically just use callsign and altitude when checking in... September 10, 20196 yr I'm not a controller or a pilot but I listen to LiveATC.net and I can give a couple of examples from this morning for commercial airline pilots and controllers in the Toronto FIR: Envoy 3470 with you, we're at one zero thousand four hundred for one five thousand. Envoy 3470, Toronto Centre, Roger, climb level two three zero. This is Delta 1796 with you level three seven oh. Delta 1796, Toronto Centre, flight level three seven zero. Good afternoon. I don't listen that often and the transmissions are not always clear but I don't think I have ever heard “tree” and I may have heard “niner” only a handful of times. Maybe they are more common among private pilots. I focus more on the big jets like the 747, 777 and 787 because I have them in FSX. Dugald Walker
September 10, 20196 yr Taylor, not sure if you've seen these sites but they may help: https://www.aopa.org/training-and-safety/students/presolo/special/new-pilots-guide-to-atc-communication https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/publications/ Have a look at TBL 4-2-2 in the AIM. Randy
September 12, 20196 yr "With you" has been with us for a while. While it is not part of the standard ATC phraseology (at least in the US), it is certainly one of the more benign "violations" handed out by the phraseology police. Now the real question is, did all these commercial pilots using "with you" come up on MSFS ATC? 🤔 Edit: Oh, and just to make sure I'm not misunderstood, phraseology police exists primarily on internet forums, and thankfully they have no regulatory authority to hand out actual violations 😉 Edited September 12, 20196 yr by snglecoil Chris
September 12, 20196 yr Hi Chris, Hah - the chicken or the egg - I’ve thought the same myself... Yeah - LOL - I’ve heard “hasta la vista” plenty of times on the radio - doesn’t mean it’s correct or proper... Regards, Scott
September 12, 20196 yr The real world has the guard police , when anyone intentionally or otherwise transmits on 121.5 they are instantly met with a barrage of “ GAURD !’ or “YOU’RE ON GAURD” Edited September 12, 20196 yr by jon b 787 captain. I only occasionally hear someone use "tree" or "fife". I'm guilty of not using them...however I may make an effort to do so going forward. Yesterday I was shooting practice approaches and heard the pilot ahead of me call inbound for runway "fife." It caught my attention. And this guy's coms were flawless, very confident and professional. Chris

September 12, 20196 yr Niner is definitely being used almost always. Tree is roughly used by 100% of the pilots who don't have English as their native language, and almost never for the 'real' English native speakers. Talking about the usual Airlines-ATC com. Edited September 12, 20196 yr by FDEdev
