Hi all,

It's that time for me, upgrade time.  My current specs and my planned upgrade specs are below.  I’m looking for any advice on things I’m missing or things that would make more sense.  I’m planning on using the cooler, power,  and case from my last build on this new one.  Thanks for any ideas/advice, appreciate the help on this.  This is being built for use with P3D.

CURRENT BUILD:

            Windows 7 Professional Edition (64-Bit)

            Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6800K CPU @ 3.40GHz

            8GB RAM

            NVIDIA GeForce 1070

            Hydro Series™ H100 Extreme Performance Liquid CPU Cooler

            950 watt Power Supply (can’t remember the manufacturer)

 

PROPOSED BUILD:

         Windows 10 Professional Edition (64-Bit) ---  $50.00

·         Gigabyte Aorus Z390 Ultra, LGA 1151 ---  $180

·         Intel 9th Gen Core i9 9900K (5.0GHz Turbo) Eight Core  -- $500

Looks like a nice build. 

The only thing I'd change is the amount of RAM.  64GB is way, way more than most people would need, unless of course you're using applications that require loading huge files into memory.  The water cooling IMO is unnecessary as well unless you intend to do some really extreme overclocking.

I'm getting the same video card as you.  I'm upgrading from a GTX 970 so should see a big performance increase.

I'm curious, where did you find Windows 10 Pro for $50?

Thnx for the response.  This will be a simming only rig.  I go the Windows 10 pricing from a google search, i got a bunch of results and just picked one.  Once i'm ready for the build, I'll start looking for actual vendor pricing.  What would you suggest on the RAM? 16 or 32?

I went with 32GB.  I've been using 16GB for years with no problems, but want to have 32GB for "future-proofing".

I don't plan to overclock as the i7 9700K can automatically reach 4.9GHz which is good enough for me, so I went with a Noctua 120mm cpu cooler with fan.

I agree, I'd drop to 32GB and put that toward a RTX2080ti -- you will /want/ the extra video memory on those cards.  That's good future-proofing right there, moreso than 64GB system memory is.  I know they're super-expensive, but I really think if I were building today that's what I'd go with.

Remember to buy mem sticks that are on your motherboard's QVL (Qualified Vendor List) -- which may be ASUS terminology, but I'm sure Gigabyte has something similar.  You can go with unverified sticks but I usually try to play it safe and go for tested ram.

You can still use the media creation tool and get Win10 for free.  It will be a digital license

I agree that 32GB of fast RAM is a better choice than 64GB.  The memory speed (3200MHz) does not tell the story as to whether it's fast or not.  Speed and CAS latency must both be considered...3000 MHz CAS 14 RAM is actually faster than consumer-grade 3200MHz CAS 16 sticks, for example.  There's a fair bit already written in the forum about this.

I do not restrict myself to QVL-listed RAM, because all it lists is a relatively few select memory DIMMs that the mobo manufacturer has tested...memory with the same model number using RAM ICs from a different batch of chips isn't any more likely to work just because it's on the QVL.  Buy RAM from a vendor and/or manufacturer with a good reputation and return policy, and make sure that a good long error-free run of MemTest 86+ or similar is among the first operational tests you run during the build.

I agree with this and I would cut the 950W PSU and go for 750W

just wanted to come back and post an update.  the new rig is built and working!!!  I ended up going with 32GB RAM, a 280mm EVGA AIO cooler, and the GTX 2070 Super, couldn't bring myself to fork over $700 just yet for the 2080.  The only issues i've run into is I am using my old alienware area 51 R1 case, so in going from the 240mm H-100i AIO to the 280mm EVGA cooler, i had to cut part of the internal frame to mount the EVGA cooler.  Also having trouble getting the Alierware command center to install, but that's not significant, and I think i'll be able to fix that over time.  Now to the hardest part, the reinstallation of all the good stuff, ORBX, PMDG, A2A, etc. etc.  -- just wanted to say thanks to all for your ideas and help!!  Happy New Year to all!!!
