Concern about delivery platform for MSFS2020

Another pet-peeve of mine with Windows store apps is the lack of ability to choose the installation directory. I have a games folder in the root of my drive, and given that the Alpha 1 is 80+ GBs in size, with the final game being even more, I would definitely like to choose where I store my games.

This is already possible.

This only allows you to choose the drive, but not which specific folder you want to store the game in. I have a few games on my desktop for example (not a desktop shortcut, but a folder with the whole game)

I feel more and more away from MFS to be true... and that's sad, or..., maybe not!

At least I have a very good and a lot simpler to use amd mod at my own will alternative...

I'm concerned about these concerned threads.

Microsoft announced many months ago that they were launching games on Steam again going forward, in addition to their own store.  I don't expect MSFS to be any different.

The alpha is very likely only on their store because it's a process they completely control, and the entitlement is tried to your Windows/Xbox account, whereas something like Steam is not.  Same reason the "Play Anywhere" program only applies to Windows Store versions of games - because the entitlement is attached to your account, and they have no control or integration with accounts on other platforms (for obvious reasons).

I have no concern for this.

Should we speculate on some concerns or be concerned by some speculations ?

It already happened. Halo was released on Steam.

Steam logo was also on the official page from the moment the new release was announced.

The steam logo is not on any MSFS2020 material I have seen, only Gamepass, which at this point means PC and XBOX2020.

Other versions (such as current gen XBOX and steam) will likely/maybe come later - much much later, I would expect not until its growth in use on gamepass has stopped, and even then only if there is still a large user base of current gen xbox, and this release is a success.

To put numbers on "much later", it took 9 years for Halo reach to get from XBOX360 to PC.

We already know you'll always push the more unfavorable scenario 🙂

Every Alpha tester is also getting a unique version of the sim that inserts an animated watermark in the render with their login name (to discourage breaking the NDA).

So I wouldn't be making any assumptions about the final delivery method from how they're running the Tech Alpha, or any future closed Beta.

I'm not in the Alpha, but I doubt it's literally a unique version of the software for each person - it's probably just designed to automatically display your username as a watermark, whatever it happens to be.  Closed alphas and betas of videogames do this all the time.

I can 95% guarantee you they are running the alpha through their own delivery method, because it gives them control over granting the entitlement to the alpha download on an account level.  They also probably don't want to waste time figuring out a way to put it elsewhere - it's just an alpha.

Trolling the MSFS forum again?

- They announced all of their games would be coming to Steam months ago, and every single first-party game since that announcement has (Halo MCC, Gears 5, Age of Empires 2 DE).  Ori 2 and Falconeer - two upcoming first-party games this year, are also confirmed already for Steam.  As is Halo Infinite. There's literally no evidence (or reason) MSFS would be different - particularly if they are bringing heavy hitters like Halo and Gears to Steam.

- The only logos on the official website for MSFS, are Windows 10, and Xbox Game Studios - meaning there's no stores listed at all.  The Steam logo was on Halo's official page, because the announcement of the MCC coming to PC was literally combined with the announcement that Microsoft games were coming to Steam going forward, and it was obviously a big deal.  Conversely, they don't even have a price for MSFS yet.

- Halo took years to come to PC, because it wasn't designed or developed for PC (or mouse and keyboard), and Microsoft saw the franchise for years as a way to sell consoles exclusively.  That thinking has changed in the past few years, as they've started bringing all of their games to PC. Though for the record, Halo 2 actually DID get a PC port ages ago, and it was awful.

- Game Pass would have no bearing whatsoever on their platform plans, and hasn't thus far.

There's like a 1% chance that MSFS doesn't come to Steam at release like everything else, and even that 1% chance would essentially be Phil Spencer suddenly pulling an about-face and completely changing their strategy between now and when it comes out.

source?

afaik they said "more" not "all".

Gears 5 was also announced to be steam when it was announced.

must be some mistake then that Forza Street isn't on steam?
