October 13, 200619 yr FSX runs pretty well for me -- stutters are rare, and it runs pretty smoothly even when the FPS dips, but i do have one odd and really irritating issue: textures and scenery that flash. the biggest problems are ground textures around runways, but it will occasionally happen with aircraft surfaces and clouds. for instance, the crossbar on the ultralight blinks like mad in VC mode. it looks a lot like a problmem i used to have in FS9, which I got rid of by unchecking "transform and lighting." obviously that's gone in FSX.my video card (Radeon 9800XT) should able to handle this... i have the latest driver. my processor's not a brand new dual core, but it's not exactly a slowpoke either (athlon 64 FX-51). does anyone have any idea what the problem is, or how i might be able to fix it?
October 13, 200619 yr Author Same here, but it is intermittent with a 9800 Pro.I had this same problem with FS9 with the latest drivers. Went back to an earlier version and it cured the problem with FS9.RTH
December 15, 200619 yr If you are talking about the flashing light of the ground and sky textures - kind of like lightning - every 8-10 seconds or so, I found this problem only happen when there was a low layer of stratus or fog and you were flying either in it or within 1000' of it vertically on top. Over and above that, the flashing disappears.duttonhttp://dutton.fsblogger.com/

ATI Radeon X1600 Pro AGP. This problem appears to be ATI-card related. As someone in the thread noted it is also "weather-dependant". Paul
December 15, 200619 yr x800xl pcie 256 here. Does the same thing but usually only about 100ft. or lower on final. Runways and taxiways flash and look torn. I posted about this a couple of weeks ago, and there seems to be no fix so far. And it does seem to be ATI card related. I have tried several driver versions to no avail. At least it appears to be random, or weather associated, as it happens in the evening, when there is partial cloud cover. Strange things.....maybe someone will be able to shed some light on a possible fix, but I am not holding my breath.danon - -
December 15, 200619 yr Author For what it is worth, I had a Radeon 9800 Pro that had similar problems. In FSX with only some planes, I would get spiking of scenery. I can't prove this, but I am reasonably sure it was GPU temperature.I replaced it with a Nvidia 6800XT and a third party heatsink cooler (with 3 fans) and have seen no sign of the problem since.Hope you find your solution.RTH
December 15, 200619 yr I noticed this last night on my X1950XTX Crossfires! I only see this when using ASV6, when it loads new weather and writes out the wx stations! With FSX using it's own weather, everything is normal! How many else who has this problem, also uses ASV6? Thanks Tom My Youtube Videos! http://www.youtube.com/user/tf51d
December 16, 200619 yr I'm using FSX's standard weather, no ASV6, and I have the problem. I also have a big fan blowing air into the PC (case is open), so I guess over-heating is not an issue. I think the problem might with just ATI cards.
December 16, 200619 yr I'm running an Nvidia 7800 GPU card and have flashing of clouds when on the ground. Initially thought it was lightning, but after watching it a bit, determined it wasn't. Also thought it might be the infamous airport beacon problem apparent in either FS2002 or FS9, can't remember which. Don't know what causes this as this is the only thing that flashes. Seems to clear up when I get above 1000 ft. Thank you. January 16, 200719 yr Hi guys, yes same problem here. I am using a Nvidia 7600GS and I am getting cloud flashes. The worst is when flying in them and the whole view is obscured by a large blank texture which pops on and off depending on where you look. Bit frustrating as I am finding fsx good on the whole..Steve
January 16, 200719 yr Author I originally had this problem in FS9, and older drivers solved it as mentioned in my original reply. I couldn't get rid of it in FSX until the following measures were taken, in spite of the fact that FSX runs cooler on my system than FS9 does (Addon's I assume).Made a little bit of an upgrade to a NVIDIA 6800 256 Bit 512MB Card. I also added third party cooling to both the video card and to my CPU while I was at it. I am highly suspicious in my case that it may have been a heat problem. In any case, the flashing is gone for me. However, the twinkle bit on trees, some buildings, fences etc. is pretty common. Had this same problem in FS9 but not this bad. Someone had an edit fix for this that I have forgotten in FS9 that virtually got rid of all of the twinkles. Turning MipMapping down got rid of most of it before the edit, but I don't see that option in FSX.Good luck:RTH
January 17, 200719 yr as stated earlier I too have this problem with my ATI X800XL. It happens about 100 feet and lower during approach, and I just discovered that it happens "behind" the prop using VC. So the visible sections of taxiway and runway visible through the spinning prop, gets all flashy and blinks, and sometimes looks torn. Happens sometimes, other times it doesn't. Not cooling related as I have an aftermarket cooler, happened before with stock cooler, and only happens behind the prop area. I love this sim! tweak tweak tweak tweak fly tweak tweak tweak fly!danon O.
