references to real world

Featured Replies

hi everybody
In Xplane, and before in FSX or FS9, I connect google earth with FSUIPC and a little program called MyFSGoogleEarth. This is an old program but it works great. It sends your coordinates in GE so GE tracks your flight in real time.
But you will tell me, why bother with this kind of program since nowadays we have ortho4xp, and soon FS2020 will bring us new level of realism? The reponse is simple: in google earth you have plenty of informations on the flown area, in real time, like cities name, wikipedia references etc...
But what I like the most is the photos: It's really great... when I fly, and I see something interesting like a beautiful mountain or just a village in the middle of nowhere, then I look at some photos in google earth and it transport you there... it's great for immersion.
Flying with google earth is a bit like searching for eastern eggs, it brings what lacks in our sims: some contextual reference.
So I was delighted to see in a MSFS2020 pic a reference to Disney World. But I fear it's only for real big landmarks and with nothing else than the name.
I dream of a sim withe a hotkey, which brings you icons related to where you fly, with names, photos, explications and so on... you get it. The cloud system would be perfect for this.

Reference is good, as we always like to have something that can be to related to when we visit places. But I doubt Microsoft would like us to any reference to Google, their business opponent.

Wasn't there already a screenshot showing Poi's?

I think so too.

Also Aerofly FS had something similar i think. So, it is duable for sure. Especially considering how much people keep repeating like parrots "WORLD SIMULATOR" in almost every post they make 🤣

Oh boy... the demands are really getting out of hand.

They have so much to worry about, that implementing some kind of Wikipedia on the simulator would be just too much.

Just be happy they will do that for well known landmarks. Have informations about a hidden village on far away Mountain would be asking too much.

But hey, you can always ask for a DLC/add-on, or use the SDK to do it yourself. I’m sure if there’s market for that, someone will develop it.

Below is the screenshot.  And I think it is just showing waypoints, not POIs.

I hope they do add a virtual tour guide, where you can learn about places.  Or at the very least show the names of places.  And let us filter what it shows, so we can turn on or off resorts, major roads, lake names, city names, national parks, etc.  And add a key mapping, unassigned, to a quick toggle to turn all on or off.

My brother has Coronavirus, confirmed by testing. On 3/26 he almost didn't survive the night.  He had extreme trouble breathing and was given a steroid inhaler.  He was very weak, had nausea, and other issues that aren't pleasant.  As of this update he is feeling much better, and seems he will be fine.  Stay safe out there.  (Updated 4/6)

I doubt there is a waypoint called Walk Disney World Resort.. Anyway, most of everything else you ask for already exists. It's called Google Earth 😛 And has all those infos and exploring modes as well

I meant maybe the user clicked points on a map to add them to the waypoint list.    Seems we need Bing Earth.

Eeeeeh, I dont know... it's not just callouts, I've always had a dislike of additional windows, popups, icons, so forth on the screen that really shouldn't be there. To me they just seem distracting.

Since this is the only time we have seen them, they must be off by default.  But I agree, I wouldn't want them all the time.  I want to be able to enjoy the view fully uncluttered.

But it is surprising how many flight sim users are more interested in what`s outside than the aircraft itself and fly in spot view.

Really? If that wasn’t the case Orbx wouldn’t have grown so much.

Yeh it's equally important inside and outside.

I must be the only one that enjoys the view when flying in real life.

And I don't think anyone here said they are more interested in what's outside than the aircraft itself.  A pilot should be paying attention to both.  And they are pushing how you can fly VFR in the sim.  Well, some people use landmarks when flying.  And some may use landmarks that they don't even know what they are or the name of.  I could see a real pilot saying, I just learned the name of that building because I flew this route in my simulator the other day, and it told me.
