March 20, 20206 yr Hi, specs: i7 4490 4ghz 32gb ram 1080 ti I have all pmdg aircraft, aerosoft a320/330, orbx global, orbx Ireland & England and some airports. I was in the pmdg 737ngxu earlier taking off from LHR and got 6fps. Is there any way I can maximise p3d FPS ? thanks
March 20, 20206 yr Way too many unknown variables to provide an informed response. Screen resolution? AA/AF settings? Are you running complex weather? What are your LOD Radius/scenery complexity/autogen density settings? March 20, 20206 yr Moderator @brennanjed, start by moving all scenery sliders to the far left, turn off road vehicle traffic and run with clear skies with no weather program running. Also, switch to a default aircraft. That will give you a good indication of what your system can deliver with the smallest load on it. Come back with a fps when positioned on 27L at EGLL. March 21, 20206 yr Author Hi, all, and thanks for all of your swift replies, much appreciated. I'm not too great on tech specs, but I'll tell you what I know. Intel i7 4490 4.0GHz. No turbo or anything like that. Doing what you said, Ray, I am capable of about 50-60fps. Screen resolution 1920x1080x32. Scenery complexity extremely dense autogen and scenery draw distance high autogen vegetation density dense autogen building density dense. 4xMSAA FXAA off. Texture filtering anisotropic 16x and texture res high. Once again, all your help appreciated. Thanks
March 21, 20206 yr Moderator @brennanjed, I take it you’re not getting 50-60 with the settings you listed. Scenery Complexity of Very Dense etc? Those numbers are with all sliders to the left I would assume. Okay, so this is what you have to do. Change one thing at a time and determine what effect it has on fps. Don’t be tempted to change more than one thing otherwise you won’t know which change caused it. Start by leaving all slides to the left with blue skies at EGLL 27L and switch to a payware aircraft. Check fps and the difference compared to a default aircraft is the penalty of running that aircraft. Is the PMDG better or worse than the Aerosoft? If the fps with either is still reasonable then increase scenery complexity by one notch only. Measure the fps. Work your way through the settings until you find one that has a dramatic effect on performance. Wind that setting back one notch. I can tell you that even on my system I cannot run with Scenery Complexity set to Very Dense so you will have to compromise with Medium I suspect. Finally, add some weather. You can choose a themed weather event such as cold front or heavy thunderstorms. The 1080Ti will be able to work hard on performance so it’s likely it’s your CPU that is holding things back. You have to adjust the settings that are CPU dependent to get acceptable performance. Things like heavy weather should be okay with the 1080Ti. March 21, 20206 yr Author Thanks, Ray, for your swift response. I really do appreciate it as I have no knowledge with performance tweaks! Yes, 50-60 is with all sliders to the left. I will try what you said in the morning, and see what I can find. On the other hand, is there anything on the PC that could be causing FPS to drop such as other games installed or anything like that? Thanks again
March 21, 20206 yr Moderator Welcome to everyone's favorite hobby here at Avsim - tweaking 😉 You already received some great tips, when you have a chance give Avsim's P3D guide a try too. It may look a bit technical, but with the help here in the forums, we'll get you the help you need. March 21, 20206 yr Author Thanks, Peter for this guide. I am sure it will be useful. It looks great as I am just flicking through it now. I will read through it in the morning. Thanks again - have a good evening

I can't add much to the good info you're getting, but I'll address your question above. Other installs should not affect anything unless they load something into memory that uses the cpu. Typically the only thing you should observe would be anti-virus scans going in the background and similar. You should exclude your P3D subfolder from any AV scan (manually scan it while not simming if you want, but exclude it from auto scans). The advice everyone is giving you is good -- only test 1 thing at a time. Probably with your older cpu you will have to be careful with autogen building settings, and autogen radius, and vehicle traffic. Heathrow is a good torture test because it has all of the bad elements -- wave effects, AI from three major airports, road traffic, custom objects (Big Ben, Heathrow buildings etc.), and tons of autogen, particularly autogen buildings. March 21, 20206 yr Are you running complex weather, or are you quite happy to fly in relatively clear skies and calm winds? I am just trying to get a picture based on how I run P3D on my current PC. March 21, 20206 yr Moderator @brennanjed, more excellent advice has followed mine. The guide is very useful because it shows which settings use the CPU and which use the GPU. The GPU being your 1080Ti. You can afford to have higher settings for those things controlled by the GPU since it's a very powerful card. You will need to reduce those reliant on the CPU as it's the weakest element in your system. One final tip. With a default aircraft loaded at 27L EGLL and all sliders to minimum save that scenario. Call it EGLL_System_Test. Make it a favourite. That way you can easily reload those settings. Report back with how you're going. Ray (Cheshire, England). Yes it is but with winds predominantly from the west in the UK 27 runways are more likely to be used than 09. Moot point I grant you. For my own testing I slew up to 1500ft at EGLC and head westwards towards EGLL at 160kts. After passing T5 I close P3D and read the average fps over several minutes in the fsuipc.log. I find that gives a better overall reflection of performance. Testing by pointing east might drag down performance when in reality you wouldn't normally take off in that direction. I suspect once brennanjed reduces Autogen from Very Dense performance will improve dramatically. Ray (Cheshire, England).
