P3Dv5...first blush. The good, the bad, and the ugly..

Featured Replies

Yesterday I purchased and installed P3Dv5. Today I flew it for the first time after a sample flight yesterday..

The Good

This morning I installed Orbx Libraries and Northern California.  I have a flight I use to test things after making changes and/or tweaking a few things.  Today after setting things per my P3Dv4 settings I fired up the Mooney and flew from Gnoss Field in Novato California to KSFO.   I normally fly with my FR set to 32, but for this initial test I set it to unlimited.

The flight was very smooth and the frame rates never varied from 148fps to 155 fps thoroughout the flight.  And while there were a few problem spots with skips and one pause in V4 they were gone in V5.

The Bad

Airport selection.  Am I missing something?  What happened to typing in an IACO code or Airport Name to get to an airport.  This time consuming method of having to scroll country, sate, city, and/or airport lists is a major step backward in convenience.  I hate it!  I am going to have to figure a way to save my favorite aircraft, pre-position them at airports, and enable them from the desktop.  I did that with all of my sims up to v4.

The Ugly.  And this is a biggie...

The San Francisco bridges.  Ever since FS2004 when MS had finely modeled Golden Gate and Bay Bridges they reverted to a tinkertoy Bay Bridge and a Golden Gate Bridge that looks foreshortened and has elephant leg towers.  I don't know if X-pLlane models the bridges correctly, but Orbx does.  Certainly it can't be that difficult or doesn't Lockheed Martin (and formerly MS) care how they look?  Yes, there is a 3rd party bridge available, but for the price you pay you'de think Lockheed-Martin could do it right.

Tomorrow I am going to see if my copying my Kodiak over from v4 will work.  See you then.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

I am not sure how it skipped but we had the cursor default at the search after a hotfix in v4 so i reported it to LM

The Ugly.

I can think of three things:

1) 3D night lighting was as bad as I've ever seen, even with FTXG. The FTX Light Tweaker is INOP in v5.

2) Most of the ORBX regions I tested the textures looked washed out. Without PTA support or REX EF I would not even consider trying P3D v5 again.

3) The cockpit of my L-39 looked fuzzy and the VC lighting did not look right. I know that it's not a supported airplane and that alone is enough for me stick with v4.5.

Bonus: The water color is way off in tropical destinations making this sim a downgrade from my v4.5. What makes P3D outstanding is the way that it renders photo sceneries and water in tropical destinations. I'll put my images against any real ones or anything that many claim to look more realistic. I was born in PR and have flown IRL in many of the Caribbean Islands so I have an idea of what it looks like.

Performance was excellent, but too many negatives to keep in my SSD.

I was able to just copy my P3Dv4 Kodiaks and gauges to P3Dv5 and they worked perfectly.

I'm still looking around.  The scenery around the San Francisco Bay Area looks good in Orbx's Northern California.  But I would like to tone down the colors a bit.

v4 still installed in case I have to go back.

Another positive.  Load times.  Loading from the desktop to an aircraft ready fly from an airport (using the same existing scenario).

P3Dv4 on the SSD - 2:23 (Only Orbx North American loaded).

P3Dv5 on the HDD - 0:42 (All Orbx Scenery except the True Earth sceneries loaded.)

If it’s the lionheart kodiak you can install it directly to v5 with the installer.
