June 28, 20205 yr I'm on P3d V5 HF2, latest nvidia driver, Win 10 2004, .. I have GSX and Level 2 expansion installed.. everything works fine.. but none of the airport or airline specific logos appear on the vehicles.. I tried with disable RTT on/off.. cleared shaders too.. it always gives me default vehicle textures, no company specific logos.. I even manually tried to select texture from C:\x86\addon-manager\gsx\texture, but still doesnt work.. i will post in fsdt forum too after i sign up, but i get solutions on avsim much faster.. can someone help? @virtuali- can you help? thanks.. GSX is automatically disabled when you are flying higher than 10k feet and/or faster than 250 kts. And even when it's active, it won't do much other than checking your position in case you need to pre-select a gate in flight for a nearby airport. Since GSX runs completely externally to the sim ( it's written in Python, so it runs entirely inside the Couatl.exe program, which is a Python interpreter ), it won't take any memory or take cpu cycles from the simulator compared to when its disabled from the menu. The only reason you might want to disable it from there, is if you find a problem on a certain airport that for some reason cause an error, which still won't affect the sim but might be annoying to see, and by disabling you remove the errors while waiting to sort them out. So, the option is there only for troubleshooting, not regular use. Generally speaking, GSX never does anything on its own, it's always you that must call it first, with the hotkey. But I am also not seeing any logo´s used anymore. I knew he had explained and I recalled it also. And hoped for an update within a few months. Unfortunately Umberto seem not to find any time/resources to update this. I do have a clue why, and I respect his shift! They must earn money too. And with "free updates", which costs lot´s of time, they simply won´t. But maybe he will surprise us in the next few weeks/quarter. February 19, 20215 yr Commercial Member None of these comments has any relationship to the reality of the facts, which we have explained multiple times on our forum. - Operator logos were made in P3D4.5 using the much more efficient Render to texture feature, that used DirectX 11. P3D V5 doesn't support DirectX 11 anymore and, if anybody recall how many issues there were ( not sure if they are 100% fixed now ) with other developers that converted their existing DirectX 11 code to DirectX 12, for example TrueGlass, you might understand why we decided to not touch DirectX 12 until it's 100% rock solid. - Even when DirectX 12 will be finally usable without fear of DXGI errors due to VRAM exhaustion, it might not the best choice to use it for what we need because, in addition to logos, we used DirectX 11 to create text on the fly, which allows things like working panels, running indicators like the fuel quantity counter, but also the jetway numbers. This feature required DirectWrite, which is a Windows API that acts as a bridge between the Windows Font rendering system and DirectX. This API has been REMOVED FROM DX12, Microsoft suggests to use an hybrid approach, and call a compatibility layer for DX11 calls in DX12. Obviously, this has a cost in performance, and not only that: IT STEALS EVEN MORE VRAM. Do we want to consume more VRAM in P3D V5, especially now, since you basically can't buy a new video card ? - You all have seen how much pain LM is going through in trying to make DX12 more reliable, and that's because it gives full control to the developer about VRAM memory handling, something that in DX11 was automatically made by DirectX 11 itself and the video drivers. Video drivers are constantly improved, tested and researched by an army of developers which work for the company that *made* the video card, and DirectX 11 had the full backing of Microsoft. DirectX 11 was hard enough to use ( nobody in the real world of games use it anymore, they all use game engines like Unreal or Unity ) but I have no problem saying DirectX 12 is basically out of reach for a small developer like we are, considering even LM ( which IS a multi-billions corporation after all ) is having an hard time getting to grips with it. Do you want, as GSX users, to rely on a technology that is so complex and dangerous, since even the small mistake can DXGI-crash the sim ? LM has realized this and, they are adding HTML5 Render To Texture features, which means we can probably get BOTH our missing features ( dynamic textures and dynamic font rendering ) WITHOUT having to deal with DirectX at all so, as soon it was released, in 5.1, looking at the SDK, we decided to stop even considering eventually moving to DirectX 12, and wait for this new feature to mature. Because, as normal ( the MSFS 2020 SDK is not any different ), when new features are added, they are not usable immediately, because they need to be tested and bugfixed first, you must have noticed there's a known bug in the new HTML5 menu system, which misleads users assuming "GSX menu has stuck", when in fact is the simulator menu that sometimes gets stuck and, the current solution is to temporarily switch to the old Scaleform menu. Also, the HTML Render to Texture feature currently lack two crucial features - higher resolution textures ( we need a large texture atlas to create jetway logos and jetway numbers, otherwise they would be impossibly slow if we tried to create a separate texture for each single jetway and each single jetway number stand at the airport ) - support for non-square textures. Each and every logo texture is non-square, for the obvious reason that we can obtain the best possible pixel/memory allocation. If we need a logo that is 1024x256, because those are its proportions, it would be highly inefficient creating a 1024x1024 with 80% of empty space. Again, do we want to *waste* VRAM in P3D V5 ? And of course, even if we decided to switch to all square textures and eat up the extra VRAM consumption ( because of course anybody can just go out and buy a 3090, sure... ), we'd lose compatibility with every custom logo users ever made for GSX in the past so no, we REQUIRE support for non-square texture, which right now is not there. So, just like many other developers in MSFS, announcing long delay, waiting for the SDK limitations to be removed or tested, we ARE waiting until we can get back to P3D and reinstate the Render to Texture option and, WHILE WE WAIT, we are working on MSFS because, it's not as if we can just bankrupt "while we waiting"... February 19, 20215 yr Commercial Member And yes, we are also considering a backup strategy, in the worse case scenario, which is LM won't improve HTML Render to Texture as we need, and is going back to the FSX-style of multiple repaints. We are not going to do this *now*, because it has many drawbacks; - It will increase the number of Simobject variations installed in the sim quite a bit, about 7000 objects more, and they will continue to grow each time a new operator is added, because you must multiply the number of operators times the number of objects variations so, each new operator adds about 200 new Simobjects so, is not really sustainable. - It will prevent easy creation of custom operator logos like in P3D4, since we won't be able to just convert a .PNG to .DDS on the fly and show it dynamically, but a full set of repaints would need to be prepared offline. - It won't have any Font/Text rendering feature, so no active panels, no running counters and no Jetways numbers too. That's why this should be considered only a last resort measure, in case we are sure the HTML rendering features won't be improved with the things we need to do the same things we did with DirectX 11. February 19, 20215 yr It's just a shame no update is given, particularly as they still advertise GSX with "every vehicle is available in many different liveries, chosen automatically by your location in the FSX World."
