Where Are the Airports?

Featured Replies

Typing the ICAO code isn't working for me either. I have to zoom in to a major airport that's on the map which is close to the feeder airport I actually want.

None given or needed. You were still incorrect and just can't handle that. That's your problem, not mine. The OP and others had this happen to them and you went off half-cocked with an aggressive post suggesting we were personally broken in some way. That is what happened. Period.

No, I was completely correct in how it worked and your suggestion was based off yours not working. You just went on a deeply embarrassing, condescending rant on how it should work and dreadful analogies. Then it turns out, there was no problem and you hadn't even restarted your sim. Even multiple edits of previous posts, one including "Apology accepted", as a condescending remark you quickly edited out. Now, talking about how went off 'half-cocked'? I know it's hard to eat that crow.

What we're saying is, in the search box we anticipated being able to type in the ICAO of any airport and have the database take us there.

Apparently, contrary to standard UI practices, this isn't actually a search box. You instead have to play around with the globe before you can actually find what you want. What we're saying is that this simply isn't as intuitive as just typing in any ICAO in the world and THEN have the globe zoom to take you there.

I'll try this another way. Imagine going to a library and looking up a book, but the only results you get are for a single shelf. Oh, you want to search more than the single shelf? Then go to this OTHER tool and select which shelves you want first and then come back to the search and you'll be able to find what you want. Wouldn't it just make more sense to have the search look at all the shelves and save me the step of having to tell it first which shelves to look at? Like, for example, maybe I have no clue where Kiribati is, but I know it's ICAO. With this setup I can't find it without first going to Google to look it up on a map.

This is clearly a bug on first load. It works after you somehow get the database initialized by zooming on the globe or some other method.

Complete nonsense. Search works fine either by icao or city name

You're reinventing things. You tried to tell us what we experienced we didn't experience. Again, PERIOD. I also did edit that post to be MORE harsh and direct. So I'm not at all sure where you're going with that one. Again, try in the future to avoid telling people that experienced something that they're incorrect and clearly didn't see what they know fully they saw because THEY live in their bodies and not you.

Here we go again. There are now three people in this thread explaining what they saw and you're saying it's nonsense. Nice. Glad you know exactly what we all did or did not experience. What did I have for breakfast, pray tell?

If you look at EDDS in Bing Maps, the whole airport is blurred out. Apparently, governments can request that certain areas be blurred out for national security reasons. There are a number of missing airports in Europe where this is the case. Some new airports are also missing where they were either built after the latest bing data was acquired, or the bing imagery is not sufficient enough for the AI to recognize that there is an airport there.

I did see that. But it still confuses me because it is the only international Airport in Germany where that happened. And I also don't understand why the availabilty of aerial photography does influence whether there is an airport drawn in the sim at all. That is what Airport Charts and Databases are for. If I can build a new airport that was not in the original database of P3D using ADE and various other satelite sources then I expect Asobo to be able to do the same.😉

We did. That's what you're not following. Go ahead and type KPHL into the search box. It won't return a hit. We don't expect 37,000 things in a drop-down. We do expect 37,000 airports to be in the database so that you can use the SEARCH (see, it's right in the name!) box to .... Oh, I don't know... SEARCH for it?

Yes it does, someone in discord asked to search for their local airport and I just typed it and it showed.

This is a partial install issue. I did the same thing when I paused the install halfway and restarted the sim. It then opened up the menu and only a few major airports were there. The rest were not showing up.

I had to fix this by (1) uninstalling the base sim via Add or Remove Programs in system settings, installing again from the MS Store, restarting the sim, setting my packages install location to the same place again, and then clicking update. It kept installing from there.

One problem with that theory: My install worked just fine and the box is working fine now. Something causes the database to not be indexed or available on initial load. My GUESS is that most people jump into the eye candy of the globe and that likely causes it to be indexed. Again, just a guess. In my case I never touched the globe and went straight to the box and it failed to find anything other than the recommended airports. Once past that it seems to be working fine.

Strange, but good to know. Hmm.

Agreed. Just frustrated by people (not you) trying to tell the rest of us what we actually experienced first-hand and to suggest we're somehow mixed up or not very bright. That's just wrong and it's how bugs get mixed and unaddressed.

Yeah that’s not cool at all. Just because it’s not an issue that they had doesn’t mean it’s made up lol

Hi

Same for me, typed in ICAO and nothing... restarted MSFS and bingo search function working, simple solution if anyone has similar?
