C172: AP tries to kill me

Featured Replies

I've completed 2 vfr flights approx 1 hr each with the G1000 C172.

Flight plans created on Little Navmap and loaded fine in the world screen.

Used only heading and alt modes, no nav / gps source.

Never had a problem. Paused often with the esc key, a few time also with live pause for screenshots.

🤔

The AP functions for a good while. Out of the entire flight from Norway down to italy in a c172 and a 208b, I have had this happen 4 times. It works for maybe an hour or two, and then just goes haywire. It's usually in nav mode (gps) when it happens, but I've also had it happen in heading mode.

Yes, the exact same thing happened to me. Suddenly went nuts. I'm almost too scared to use the autopilot now!

My mouse controls have also become unresponsive a couple of times.

I couldn't judge  not having the sim but some years ago I had issues with the A2A Skylane (182) KAP 140 Two Axis Autopilot with altitude preselection.  Obviously the mistakes were mine. But I found myself a couple of times in dicey situations. One has the feeling sometimes that a A/P is as easy as throwing a switch, not my experience.

I think that some people have specific issues. It may be due to the build (gamepass vs steam etc), or possibly a controller mapping.

I'm experiencing totally unusable autopilots (all Garmins) using gamepass. Steam is currently installing and hopefully this will resolve the issue. I'm very familiar with the G1000 and its quirks & suspect I'm not doing anything wrong in terms of my usage...however - diagnostically - I'm not discounting this.

You'll have to wait for a fix. Right now the AP in every aircraft I've tried is essentially inop.

Im just now figuring that aspect out. Thought at first it was me. But, Done pullin my hair out...LOL

AP works fine for smaller GA aircraft. I have no problem whatsoever. Most trouble are with bigger jets

I think there's a bug with active pause, it messes with the avionics. Try using the pause to menu, it usually works better.

I found when I used active pause in the Baron, once I resumed flight the elevator trim was setup to full down and I immediately nose drives for the ground, happened twice.

Using the AP on the 172 was always an uncomfortable feeling - especially when it takes a minute to figure things out and you have a negative vert speed.

In MSFS2020, however, the autopilot really only operates in CFIT mode.

172 autopilot wasn't mean to follow terrain. In my flying career I used simple S-tec autopilots. Very primitive! Once I used autopilot sync with KLN98B which did the whole ILS approach in IMC (as part of demo) and it was rough and scary!

Make sure that you sync GPS flight plan with your PFD or CDI. It will follow your flight path. Also I prefer to us VS with manual vertical speed. FLC is funny business now. Other than that NAV, APR. HDG, VS work just fine

It was definately a bug, and I havent been flying any of the jets yet. I've been flying for probably around 20 hours now, and Ive seen this bug several times in the smaller GA. Its just like the AP is having a heart attack and is leaning forward on the stick. The plane turns over and plummets. So it's not like it's not sending any commands - it is, but it is stuck.

This is really odd. Did it happen when you first engage it or enroute when AP is already on?

Only enroute, and usually after an hour or so. It was working perfectly up untill it suddenly happened. Flying straight and level at cruise speed.
