How are your A320 landings?

In a word - tricky.

I had my first IFR flight in the Neo yesterday using Simbrief's excellent new MS2020 flight plan export.

After years of flying Aerosoft's buses I feel I'm learning to fly all over again. Which is a good thing.

Not one single add-on running outside the sim yesterday and the immersion was 100%. A dawn approach into KSFO 25R.

The elevators are too sensitive. Other than that (and some other stuff that Asobo will fix) MSFS 2020 is the best thing that's ever happened to flight simming..

My landings are OK, and especially now that I got the reverse thrust sorted the rollout is fine.  It is takeoffs that I am struggling with. The aircraft just blows through the speeds on climbout.  My understanding of normal Airbus procedure is you pitch up to follow the flight director, and that combined with setting throttles into the climb detent you can maintain V2, retract flaps on schedule and eventually engage autopilot to accelerate per your flight plan. But speed control on climbout does not seem to work very well at all.

I do find I am gradually enjoying the Airbus in MSFS more despite the bugs. It isn't close to any of the payware 'Buses, but it is nice to just hop in and fly to locales that actually look decent out of the box.  If they can fix a few bugs, the Airbus would be an OK "quick fix."

(some of my other landings in the A320 have not exactly been greasers, though you could likely use the aircraft again after the majority of them!)

My first couple landings of the A320neo were pretty bad because of some stuttering I had early on and being very unfamiliar with the A320 cockpit.  I've spent years flying the 737-700 in FSX, so it's definitely a different feel.  The last time I landed was a pretty good except for how hard I set it down...I was very accustomed to how low the 737 sits in comparison so I misjudged the timing of my flare and slammed it down pretty hard.  No crash or damage...but IRL passengers probably would have been very angry.

Yes it handles like those planes in GTA 5. The smaller jets are hilarious as well with a climb rate of 9000+ fpm. The smaller props are quite good though.

Especially considering the fastest Citation, the Citation X only does half that. 🤣

Where is all that night light glowing gone? Wasnt it in the MS Vdeos?

Night lighting changed after the first alpha build. It was the best lighting so hopefully they bring it back via updates.

It goes down like a brick, but manageable if you counteract its willingness to descend instead of just looking at the screen waiting for the SPLAT

I just tried multiple circuits in the A320.  I'm getting the same thing everyone else is.  You're flying along fine at 140 on approach but it's hard to get the nose down (it wants to climb) even if you trim it starting at about 200 ft. So you cut the throttle a little too early to get the thing to drop but then all of a sudden speed drops fast and it drops like a rock. There is something weird about the flaps. If you land with flaps 2 instead of full, you can make a much nicer landing. I also had to make sure that I had less than 20% fuel.

It reminds me of the first iteration of the Majestic Q400. Full flaps required way too much nose down input, so you'd lower the throttle and you'd drop out of the sky.

All the videos I have shown a nose up or level attitude during final approach on the real A320.  I think the flap lift modeling and wind/turbulance modeling are pretty overdone.

I am a former flight instructor with over 2,000 hours of flying time and I agree that the A320 in FS2020 is very difficult to fly.  Here are a few of my tips:

1.  The biggest secret to making a good landing is a good approach.  That is especially true for the A320.  You need a nice steady approach (constant airspeed and constant rate-of-descent all the way down to the point of flare).  Use auto-throttle set to 140kt - that helps a lot.

2. The aircraft doesn’t glide much and doesn’t float much.  You have to “motor” it down the runway with about 25-30% all the way up to the flare.  A flat approach seems to work best with power.

3.  The response to power changes is VERY slow.  When you change the throttle setting, it can take seconds for the engines to spool up or down.  You have to make small, incremental power changes.  I think it works best to keep the power at about 25-30% all the way down to the runway if possible and just make very small adjustments.

Every landing for the past week has been spot on.. no wing drop to the left, and good elevator response compared to the launch aircraft. Only thing i need to watch is the acceleration after take off... AP etc is working fine for me for the same period. (Using the Flybywire version 3.1)

AMD Ryzen 7 5800x3d, MSI X570 Pro, 32 gb DDR4 3600 ram, Gigabyte 6800 16gb GPU, 1x 2tb Samsung  NvMe , 1x 2tb Sabrent NvME, 1x Crucial 4tb Nvme M2 Drive

I only once had the banking to the left problem and once the plane sank like a brick for no obvious reason and I crashed one mile before the runway. Other than that, I’m quite happy with most of my landings. I always proceed as follows: I disengage the autopilot at 1000-150ft, depending on how precise and stable the approach is (and on mood), at close to 20ft I pull up the nose a little and at „retard“ I set the throttle to idle (before that, throttle is always in managed mode). If the glide slope is steeper than normal it gets a bit trickier. I then pull up/idle a bit earlier, which  sometimes results in overshooting the optimal touchdown point. Is this the correct procedure?

What I think is not ideal at the moment is how the touchdown and the rollout feels. Maybe they could add some shaking and better sounds to improve the sensation. But all in all I really enjoy landing this bird.
