Interesting observation Computer Spec wise

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

I have recently upgraded my system to a 10th Generation i7 10700K (not overclocked) and a Z490 motherboard with 16GB DDR4 memory and a M2 SSD .... BUT I am using an old NVidia GTX770 4MB Graphics card ....

The reason being is that I am waiting for the new 30 series graphics to be released very soon

I have updated FS2020 and set the sim to High End settings and I do have to say it is running superbly well with no micro stutters at all!

All I can say is that it must be the CPU doing quite a bit of the work so my advice is don't scrimp on your CPU if you are looking to upgrade in the future  .... it really has surprised me this  🙂

Paul

Can I ask just for professional curiosity what the previous system specs were?

Nice to hear - my new system will come with the same CPU.

Can’t wait for it to arrive...

About to do exactly the same - new mobo, cpu and 32GB but keep the 1060 until a 3070 is available.

Clock speed of CPUs hasn't increased much since my 3570K, but just 4 cores with no HT is now really hurting...

As for previous poster I'd be interested in your previous CPU 🙂

Thanks

...

Well I had a i7 9700K CPU with a Z390 Motherboard using the memory I have on the new Z490 board  .... Unfortunately Flight Sim 2020 hadn't been released before I upgraded my hardware so I can't give a like for like comparison sadly

You went from a 9700 to a 10700? Why?...is the perf diff supposed to be THAT much better?

No .. there probably isn't that much difference and it was a shame that I couldn't test the sim using the 9700K

I am in a position where I can test these things  ....

I am going to warn everyone... IF you go to the 10 series Intel chips MAKE sure you get a mobo that has specifically said that their boards are pcie 4.0 ready.

NONE of ASUS's boards are.

I am not calling out OP or trying to make him/her feel bad, I don't want you to make the same mistake I did!

I have a 9700 coming in tomorrow to replace my i5 7400.  The lack of hyperthreading is definitely affecting me.  I am hoping that hyperthreading will make a difference on main thread performance which is the cause for almost all my stutters.  The new generation has more physical cores so hyperthreading is not a big deal for them.

As for GPU, my AMD 580 is doing quite well.  Of course limiting my self to 30fps in my video driver helps.  The graphics settings I use force my card to use my slower RAM but, since I'm not asking for 60FPS, it keeps up very well at 1080p  with almost everything at Ultra.  If you can settle for 30fps, even the most basic video card will provide surprisingly good visuals.

Yeah I feel like HT is a bigger deal then people thought.  So going from 9th to 10th gen adds that back.

But the i7-9700 doesn't have hyper threading either, FYI. It was added back for the 10th gen.

I went for the Gigabyte Z490 Gaming X Board which indeed has the Pcie 4.0 slot

Yes I know I purchased the K version but I will not be overclocking the CPU

The reason being is I far prefer stability over a few extra frames per second

There is nothing worse than almost completing say a 4 hour flight, you are lined up perfectly on the glideslope, gear down, everything looking good and BOOM your computer crashes back to the desktop ..... Arghhhhhh  😲

I mistyped.  I'm getting the i7-7700 which is the standard clocked version of the Kaby Lake that DOES support hyperthreading.  I wanted a chip upgrade from my i5-7400 and didn't want to buy a new MB
