September 18, 20205 yr Moderator Tonight, the Jewish High Holy Days will commence with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. We reflect on the last year and prepare ourselves for the next one. From a worldwide pandemic to a much needed nationwide conversation about systemic racism, this year has been a challenging one. Yet, even during these uncertain times, ancient tradition teaches us the importance of being a tzadik, a righteous person, and to live our lives in pursuit of tzedek, the Hebrew word for justice. Let us use this time to reflect on the values of righteousness and justice – and recommit to fighting hate for good and improving ourselves through education, compassion and empathy in the coming year. I wish all who celebrate a Shana Tovah U’Metukah. May the year 5781 be happy, healthy and sweet for all. Fr. BTW, I’m not Jewish and don’t know many of the holidays besides the biggest ones that are listed in mainstream calendars. Having said that, when I saw the name Shana Tovah prior to (for my Jewish friends), I thought it was going to be about a Russian girl/lady 😂 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
September 21, 20205 yr My high school had a synagogue nearby and about 40% of our school were from Jewish Families, therefore I knew when all these holidays were from those years 40% of the school went missing during these holidays. Mazel Tov, enjoy time with your families 😎 Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me

September 21, 20205 yr Administrators Yeah, I guess it's only for a Passover seder. We had it whenever Mom decided to make it (Shiksa). Matzo Brie also! Am I allowed some gefilte fish and horseradish? Charlie, you may not only have gefilte fish and horseradish whenever you want, you may also consume my portion as well. I've never managed to develop a taste for it over the past seventy-odd years! Actually I'm not all that fond of fish in general, but some seafood I dearly love includes lobster, scallops, shrimp, and pickled creamed herring! Fr. September 22, 20205 yr Administrators Bill. have I got a seafood pasta dish for you! I normally use calamari, bay scallops, and shrimp. Basic tomato gravy (sauce) with a tablespoon of cuttlefish ink added and stirred until totally coal black. Now add squid ink pasta, which is also black and then chow down! I normally use 3 cloves of chopped garlic to add a little zing. Italians call it spaghetti al nero di seppia. September 22, 20205 yr Author Moderator Charlie that all sounds delicious except for the calamari, which is yet another seafood I've never developed a taste for... Of course, it may simply because of how the Sisters prepared it in the religious community where I was a Novice. They were all native Italians who had emigrated to the U.S. along with some Fathers and Brothers of that same religious community. They were so tough that it felt like I was trying to chew up sliced white garden hose... 👎 Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
September 22, 20205 yr Administrators Definitely not cooked right! Probably making our Jewish friends crazy because they don't eat shellfish! (phooey!) September 22, 20205 yr Author Moderator Oddly enough though, calamari was the only thing they ever fixed that I did not like. I jokingly referred to them as "Redneck Italians" because they all came from deep southern Italy. They used them in a seafood stew and I never could tell if they were overcooked or undercooked. They also would sometimes serve them with garlic butter or alfredo sauce. Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
