October 1, 20205 yr Hi, I am struggling now since almost 2 weeks to get MSFS2020 to run properly and NOT CTD. I am getting the crashes totally random, sometimes on start up, sometimes during flight setup and also during a flight. I now saw the posting "Zendesk MSFS guidelines for solving CTD etc" and followed it step by step. Here is what I encountered: When I try to run the SIM in Safe Mode, it will NOT run. So as per post: "This step will help identify if the issues lie with the hardware or software: if the sim doesn't start in safe mode, it is likely a problem with the hardware (for instance: corrupted drivers or overclocking) but if the sim runs normally in safe mode, it's likely a problem with a program (antivirus/firewalls, conflicts). 1) I have the latest Nvidia GameReady video driver installed; 2) I have no overclocking GPU or CPU; 3) I run Windows defender and have a exception set for MSFS2020 My system is: CPU Intel Core i5-6600K; Gigabyte Z170X-Gaming 5 MoBo; 16GB DDR4 3500; Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 GPU; WIN10 v 10.0.19041 build 19041; So I am on my wits end and would appreciate any help Brgds Juergen Mader
October 1, 20205 yr Hello, Try downgrading Nvidia drivers from 456.55 to 456.38. I solved my ctd problems with this not so old driver. What about your power supply ? How much power can it really deliver ? What about your cooling system (Cpu, mainboard, case ...) Zendesk does not mention chkdsk : run cmd as admin, and type chkdsk C: /f ; it needs a reboot, then carry on with all your drives...
October 1, 20205 yr Author hi cdtlg, I will try the downgrading of the video driver. The PSU is EVGA 750W Gold and I don't believe it's a PSU issue. I will check the cooling side of the CPU and see at what temp it's running. ( it's a cooler master aircooler). I have MSI Afterburner, but somewhere it stated that it can cause problems. However, I will use it to check the CPU temp. Can I run ckdsk command on SSD drives? Thanks for reply Brgds Juergen Mader
October 1, 20205 yr What kind of CTD is it Jurgen? Does it just crash, is there anything else accompanying it? Jacek G. Ryzen 5800X3D | Asus RTX4090 OC | 64gb DDR4 3600 | Asus ROG Strix X570E | HX1000w | Fractal Design Torrent RGB | AOC AGON 49' Curved QHD |
October 1, 20205 yr Jürgen I had the same problem, and solved it after 1) I changed SOUND -Text-to-speech setting from "Azure" to "Windows Offline" 2) disable any multiplayer traffic, only "Real-TIME Online" did you check this? https://flightsimulator.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360016027399-KNOWN-ISSUES-Last-modified-Sept-29-2020- AMD 7800X3D, Windows 11, Gigabyte X670 AORUS Elite AX Motherboard, 64GB DDR5 G.SKILL Trident Z5 NEO RGB (AMD Expo), RTX 4090, Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 2 TB PCIe 4.0, Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 1 TB PCIe 4.0, 4K resolution 50" TV @60Hz, VR: Pimax Crystal Light + HP Reverb G2 @ 90 Hz, Honeycomb Bravo Throttle Quadrant, be quiet 1000W PSU, Noctua NH-U12S chromax.black air cooler. 60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking. very nice.
October 2, 20205 yr @ Juergen : Yes, you have to chkdsk all your ssd partitions. Not only for FS 2020. chkdsk checks disk integrity. you should do it once a month. If it reboots alone while checking C drive, this means your partition was corrupted. Using MacOS or Linux : fsck (chkdsk equivalent) is done automatically every 20 reboots. I do not know why this is manual under Windows as most Windows users never think about chkdsk. And you can also defragment all your disks (ssd and others) under W10 : run defrag.exe, a W tool W10 knows a ssd must not be de-fragmented, but it must be trimmed from time to time. Defrag a ssd under W10 = trim it, which is a good thing, even if new ssd generation is better than older ssd generation. We should only avoid defrag an ssd partition under W 7 or W 8.
October 2, 20205 yr I am going to assume here you are NOT using the VFR map as that has a known bug that will cause a CTD. CTD are usually either driver related or faulty memory. Whilst there are other possible causes (such as the VFR map bug I just mentioned) 9 times out of 10 it is one of those two. Run a memory checker just in case. If you rarely run memory intensive software it is possible you have a dodgy memory register that fs2020 tries to access that your normal software does not. October 2, 20205 yr Author Hi, Thanks for all the replies; here is what I did: The crash appears as total shut down of MSFS2020 and I can restart it shortly after the crash. No other issues or displays. I am NOT using the VFR map. 1) I ran the chkdsk command as admin 2) I set Aircraft Traffic to: Real time ONLINE 3) I set Text to Speech to: Windows OFFLINE 4) I used the Windows 10 Memory Diagnostic Tool - tested the computer and detected No Errors 5) I downgraded the video driver to: version 456.38 However, I still have the problem that when I boot in Safe Mode, I can NOT start MSFS2020, it will NOT run [ as per troubleshoot guide: if the sim doesn't start in safe mode, it is likely a problem with the hardware (for instance: corrupted drivers or overclocking)]. Thanks for help Brgds Juergen Mader
October 2, 20205 yr Silly question, have you done a complete uninstall/re-install of MSFS? If it's not HW it certainly sounds like something is corrupt from a file perspective... Have a Wonderful Day -Paul Solk
October 2, 20205 yr Author Hi, On Wednesday I did the 2nd uninstall / re-install. So I am flying a short route right now from KTPA to KMIA in the A320NEO. I have the following data: GPU: 65 deg C - between 90 and 54% - Fans 90 to 100% CPU: 45 to 50 deg C - 50 to 60% I believe this is pretty normal data. But the first load attempt ended in a CTD. I restarted again and am able now to fly Thanks for help Brgds Juergen Mader

Obviously in prior issues in FS deleting/rebuilding your .cfg file often solved a number of issues. Wondering if there is a similar process to follow with MSFS... Have a Wonderful Day -Paul Solk
October 2, 20205 yr Author Hi, Just completed the flight - NO problems, apart from aircraft inherent issues. I have not read anything about the rebuilding the .cfg file. Paul, if you get a chance and are willing, could you check if your simulator starts in WINDOWS SAFE MODE with NETWORK Connection? Thanks for help Brgds Juergen Mader

October 2, 20205 yr Jürgen to identify what your problem was and to better understand the cause and help others with similar problems: try reverting to previous settings and see if problem comes back. then you know exactly what caused those crashes. and reboot in between or at least quit and restart the game/simulator. 2) I set Aircraft Traffic to: Real time ONLINE - change to Multiplayer All 3) I set Text to Speech to: Windows OFFLINE - change to Azure Online I read that Multiplayer might cause the crashes since some users have modded their aircraft using insane/absurd capabilities and performance, that the game/simulator might not be bullet proof against. and if they are in your vicinity you may crash. that would be very difficult to recreate since you may not see them, especially if Multiplayer labels are set to OFF. I had the exact same problem and was an inch away from giving up on MSFS and return to my other previous simulators. October 2, 20205 yr Maybe someone already mentioned it: what does the Windows Event Viewer say after your sim crashes?
