October 2, 20205 yr I used to get CTDs until I increased the size of my virtual memory, and I don't remember having a CTD since. Here's the thing you need to understand - virtual memory is required even when you have a lot of physical memory, due to the way Windows handles memory allocation. I'm not an OS designer, so I can't give you more details than that. All I know is that I was getting CTDs, then I increased my swap file size at the advice of someone more knowledgeable in these things (I use a static file for performance sake), and it made all the difference It doesn't hurt to try!
October 2, 20205 yr since he didn't crash again after making the above changes, its unlikely it would have to do anything with virtual memory. one should make only 1 change at a time and then reassess the problem again. Windows 10 handles virtual memory normally automatically, Microsoft recommends that you set virtual memory to be no less than 1.5 times and no more than 3 times the amount of RAM on your computer. October 2, 20205 yr Author Hi All, As I stated in my previous post, after I made all the corrections/adjustments, I still had a CTD when I first started the SIM and pretty much after the "press any key" command. When I started the sim again (no reboot) that's when I could complete a full flight from KTPA to KMIA. So I really don't know if I solved anything! Question to Ricardo41: How do I use the Windows Event Viewer for a CTD? Brgds Juergen Mader
October 2, 20205 yr "So I really don't know if I solved anything! " simply reset those 2 settings I mentioned (Voice and Multiplayer) to what you had before and check if crashes are back, then we'll know. Right click on the windows icon in your start menu, go to search, type in event viewer, open the app, then peruse the "application" and "system" tabs until you find the entry for flightsimulator.exe
October 2, 20205 yr Author Hi, Virtual Memory? I have 32GB of physical memory installed (2 x 8GB sticks). So what would be the setting I should use for VAS in the "INITIAL SIZE" box (in MB) and in the "MAXIMUM SIZE" box (in MB)? According to "turbomax's" post it should be 1.5 x 16GB = 24GB = 24000MB and 3 x 16GB = 48GB = 48000MB. Is this correct? Brgds Juergen Mader
October 2, 20205 yr Hi Jurgen - try as much as possible to leave virtual memory as Windows- managed, just to eliminate another source of issues for the moment (and based on your post, you have 16GB?). Take a look at the Event Manager as Ricardo suggested and see which faults were detected in the crash. Out of curiosity, have you installed the sim in a different directory? And if you can't run the sim in Safe Mode, have you tried running the Windows Store troubleshooter? https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/4027498/microsoft-store-fix-problems-with-apps
October 2, 20205 yr no idea really but I can confirm that setting ATC to Windows offline reduced my CTD basically to zero an a very old i5-2500k. also, in case your pc system language is not set to English, I recall that I read somewhere (unsure whether ATC Azure or Windows Offline related) that for spech synthesis the English "voice pack" shall be installed on non-English systems. again, just to rule out another possibility... easy check would be to disable ATC completely and see whether that helps. Though tbo that should not cause a CTD on the "click any key to continue" screen.... October 2, 20205 yr Author Hi, I do have 16GB memory (2 x 8GB) installed. At this time I will leave it at "Windows Managed" and will try the simulator again, to see if anything changed. Thanks Brgds Juergen Mader
October 2, 20205 yr If it crashes again, let us know what Event Viewer says (right click on Start -> Event Viewer -> Windows Logs -> Application and look for anything MSFS related error)
October 2, 20205 yr Author Hi, I just completed the standard run from KTPA to KMIA w/o any incident. What I did: I checked my VAS settings and found the following - INITIAL SIZE: 8192MB & MAXIMUM SIZE: 32768MB. I set VAS back to WINDOWS MANAGED, rebooted, loaded the sim and performed the flight. So was VAS the culprit. I am not sure and will continue to test. In the meantime thank you very much for help Brgds Juergen Mader
October 3, 20205 yr Author Hi, I just completed the KTPA - KMIA run again. The same scenario, when I load the sim the first time, I get a CTD. I restart the sim and it performs w/o crashing. Here is what I found in the Event Viewer, Application - ERROR: https://www.flickr.com/photos/141330124@N05/shares/0k5039 "Faulting application name: FlightSimulator.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x5f6cce4b Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 10.0.19041.488, time stamp: 0x70e69bad Exception code: 0xc0000006 Fault offset: 0x0000000000023ed2 Faulting process id: 0x2358 Faulting application start time: 0x01d6995e052e41c0 Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_1.9.3.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\FlightSimulator.exe Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll Report Id: 80f4bf4c-91c9-4fc9-b1ed-f78c4f9073e7 Faulting package full name: Microsoft.FlightSimulator_1.9.3.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe Faulting package-relative application ID: App" Maybe someone could make heads and tails out of that description. October 3, 20205 yr Author Hi Rob and Others, My situation is such, that I can complete a flight w/o a CTD. The only time I have seen the CTD now is when I first start the Sim. The weird thing is, I am running P3Dv4 on the same machine and do not experience any CDT. Since I am in the process of building a new PC with better performance (just waiting for the GPU prices to drop) I will utilize the new PC for flight sim and remove it from the machine where I have the problem(s). I will however read the post for this particular error and see if I can solve something So until I have my new PC finished, I can live with status quo. Again thank you for all your help Brgds Juergen Mader
