Washington D.C. - White House , U.S. Capitol - What Happened

Featured Replies

First of all this post is not meant as a political post , Its meant to discuss whether or not MS and ASOBO purposely and incompletely rendered

The White House and the U.S. Capitol building.(And Yes I know there is a 3rd party addon to fix this) If you haven't seen both for yourselves to top 90 percent or more of both buildings are missing and they end in completely flat surfaces. Its almost as if construction in real life had stopped and never resumed. Its odd because as far as I could tell all the other major buildings in DC were complete in at least their height and dimensions. Like the pentagon and the Lincoln Memorial and the Smithsonian buildings.. I did not see any incomplete built buildings anywhere else. ( yes I know the Washington Monument is goofy).

I realize not every badly rendered object can be discovered and fixed before release but I find it odd that someone didnt mention this during Alpha or Beta and it didnt get fixed. I think its also odd that Washington D.C. did not get photogrammmy treatment.

So did MS and Asobo accidentally screw up  two of the most iconic buildings in America  or did they do it in purpose ?

I am not upset or triggered by this , maybe surprised. This isnt an I love America rant ( Which I do)  or anything like that so please dont go off on this post for me sounding Americentric.

It is a great question.  My nearby local airport suffers from the same neglect.  KESN, Easton-Newnan Field in Easton, Md.  Other than a tower the other buildings are flat blobs of color on the ground.  But get your point as at my airport there is nothing selective.

There was no intentional or purpose to render Washington DC incompletely.  It is simply rendered as any other city lacking photogrammetry.  London is in much the same condition, as is Moscow.

The buildings are autogen, so you are seeing the limitations of autogen, especially Autogen rendering the Washington monument as a very narrow skyscraper.

The next world update is the US, it is possible they may add the Washington DC area as a photogrammetric area, or may add additional hand drawn POI's.

There is payware Washington scenery in the marketplace but i have zero idea if it is good or not as have not tried it.

Careful with that one...

Oh no, it's not that it's bad.  It's just that some works of art here managed to get their panties in a twist over the fact that Drzewiecki Design accurately modeled the Black Lives Matter street-painting that is on 16th Street in reality. 🙄

It would "freeze" the scenery in a specific period.  Which brings up an interesting point, eventually with this technology it should be possible to "go back in time" to earlier photogrammetry and fly historic planes in the historic scenery they flew in.

Yep, that's true, but that's also true of any other aerial imagery.  The complaints were more that it was making a "political statement".   Which, I mean... yes, in the sense that everything in life is a political statement, and representing that reality is also inherently political.  People tend to only complain about "politics getting into it" when their own politics conflict conflict too harshly with the world around them.

I bought the addon scenery in the marketplace and it is very good.  The night textures are also good.

The whole “political” argument is a non issue.  It is a result of using the latest available imagery at the time the scenery was developed.  Had they blurred it out, THAT would have been political.

Plain and simple.

The scenery is fantastic.

It's just the reality of where Bing did or didn't have photogrammetry data available during development.  As someone else mentioned, DC isn't the only major world capital that is mostly auto-gen.

perhaps it will get updated in the coming USA update.  At least we can hope.

Noticed the terrible non buildings/landmarks, thought, they have got to be kidding, hopefully DC is fixed in the upcoming US update, one of the good things about this sim is you don't have to buy addons to make it look realistic.

I'm not sure, but I can imagine that the reason why they didn't handcraft that many points of interest for the US (only 12 according to the map) is that almost every bigger city has photogrammetry (277 in total) and so POIs are already part of the scenery. Dallas and Washington DC are an exception.
I don’t know what their reasoning was, but photogrammetry coverage might have played a role here. In Asia, for instance, there was not a single city with photogrammetry before the Japan update but well over 80 handcrafted POIs (now it’s 104). In Europe many major cities do have photogrammetry (52), but still nowhere near as many as in the US. This would explain why there are more POIs in Europe (40, 12 of which in London and Paris). But this theory only holds for North America, Asia and Europe, as the numbers below show.

Here are the numbers of POIs I counted on the world map (no guarantee that it’s all of them) and number of photogrammetry cities in [].

Asia: 80+ before the update (not 100% sure) [6 after Japan update]
Europe: 40 [52]
Africa: 16 (12 in Egypt) [0]
North America: 12 [288]
Middle and South America: 6 [0]
Australia and New Zealand: 3 [11]

Cities with 2 or more POIs:
Beijing: 9
Paris: 8
Cairo: 8 (depending on which pyramids you include)
Tokyo:    8 (before the update, but not 100% sure)
Hong Kong: 7
Shanghai: 7
Macau: 6
Singapore: 5
Dubai:    5
NYC (photogrammetry): 4
London: 4
Istanbul: 4
Kuala Lumpur: 3
Washington DC: 2
Rio de Janeiro: 2
Warsaw: 2
Amsterdam: 2
Moscow: 2

Based on these numbers I think we can see that there is a certain focus on North America, Europe and Asia, which probably is where their biggest markets are. I understand the frustration of some who like to fly in other regions (or Washington) to some extent, but the great thing about this sim is, I think, that this doesn’t mean that other regions look bad. Not at all. Much of Africa, for instance, has excellent imagery. Moreover, this is an ongoing process and I’m sure we’ll see some great updates in the future that also cover areas that previously weren’t given that much attention.

Back to your question. Since they only had the resources to model a limited number of POIs (say 200), they may have come to the conclusion that it made more sense to focus on regions that aren’t as well covered by photogrammetry as the US and thought 2 POIs for Washington were enough.
