Beautiful Clouds VFR on Top

Cruising around with "headings my discretion" while on top, and an eventual ILS RWY 16R at KPAE

Man, if only Asobo would open up this flight model to the users...  The avionics are okay, but you really have to watch your weights and airspeeds with this while hand flying.... and watch your AoA!

VFR looks really nice, above, these ferocious clouds...Ryan...🙂...and "headings my discretion" sounds good too....

Such a lovely jet, perfect texturing...it's a pity, you have to hand-fly...but whatever works, for now, and a challenge too......

Yeah I sometimes still feel we're flying a technology demo.  There are some functional pieces...but a lot of dysfunctional items as well.  The sim just looks way better than my decked out P3D (uninstalled for a few months) and my decked out XP11.  It's difficult to not fly MSFS because of the issues.  When I fly my friend's little beech irl it's just incredible how accurate MSFS is compared to previous sims....  what I'm saying is, it's silly to give up flying the new sim when it looks so much like real life.

Gentlemen, thank you!  I'd like to add a bit of discussion to my post.  I posted one of these to Reddit and had a few responses about a Citation being VFR.  VFR on top is actually an IFR clearance.  What I was doing here was a little atypical.  A more typical VFR on top flight would go like this: N12345 files IFR from KPAE to KCLM (Port Angeles WA).  Enroute, while speaking to approach or center, N12345 breaks out of clouds (or is in between layers) and requests "VFR on top."  All ATC has to say is "N12345 maintain VFR on top."  This allows the pilot to remain clear of clouds using airspace requirements, and climb to a VFR altitude, but they must not stray left and right of course.  Sometimes ATC would give something like "headings your discretion" then they could stray away from course.  For me, being an ATC - I loved giving these types of clearances...and more importantly, it would absolve me from IFR separation between you and another IFR aircraft.  I would still issue traffic advisories.

Another option for the pilot, once reaching VFR conditions, is to cancel IFR.  Then you're on your own (or you may continue receiving radar traffic advisories).  If you don't cancel IFR but want to maneuver in and around clouds - you should ask for a quadrant clearance.  You'll hear something like "N12345 cleared to fly the NorthWest quadrant of PAE VOR, maintain block 3000 through 5000, remain between 5 and 20 miles.  That is the only legal way to blast in and out of clouds while changing headings frequently (at least in the USA).

What I was simulating in this flight was a local IFR.  KPAE to KPAE, with a VFR on top segment, and headings my discretion.  This was just all for fun - the in-sim ATC would blow up if I were to request this LOL!  Anyway, once the pilot is finished with VFR on top, they merely say something like "seattle approach, Citation 505TC, RTB Paine with atis Alpha, request vectors for ILS 16R.  And ATC would descend me and turn me towards the ILS.

That's right...Ryan....no RW pilot would be taking such beautiful pictures, while hand-flying this jet...🙂....and watching AoA etc...at the same time...

This reminds me of an (old) episode from "I learned About Flying From That" in the Flying Magazine:

A newbie Pilot, after getting the license to fly solo, for the first time, went up in a Cessna(?), as I recall, with a friend, and was taking a picture/selfie to capture the proud moment, in mid-air, and the plane went out of control...(The pilot somehow recovered control and they both survived, to tell the story...)..
