"And the ILS was tuned in to NAV1?" - Yes.

"Most approaches have the final fixes along the ILS path, so you should have already been lined up. In all the tests where I was using the FMS flightpath", -  I was. I switched to ILS to do the final, but it never followed the glideslope. That's when I tried a test which just used AP heading with Approach - should have been fool-proof. The fact that I started following the FMS when it wasn't even selected as a NAV SRC, brought me back here.

Interested in trying? - VERY short and simple flight plan from Travis AFB (KSUU) RWY 21L to Sacramento (KSMF) RWY 34L. (ILS is 111.10 but of course that is automatically set up). I flew at 2000 feet the entire flight. In four or five attempts, I've never got ILS to bring me in.

Just to try out your route, I did the same flight. I guess double check from my video if those are the same steps you're taking - if so, screenshots or video could help us track it down, but double check if you're following the same steps here.

I'm having an issue with the autopilot. When engaging VS mode shouldn't it set your current vertical speed? When I change from FLC to VS it goes to 0 FPM, which causes the plane to IMMEDIATELY stop the descent until I can roll the wheel to -2,000 FPM. Surely that's not how the real plane works?

I have managed a full flight to plan. Only slight issue was that the auto pilot did not fly down the glide slope so I took over but managed to score one of my softest landings ever - Heathrow at night too. Very pleased with myself and do now feel I am in a position to get to grips with the planes systems having achieved a pretty good auto-pilot based flight. Need to understand better sequence of events for altitude change (was a little too much button mashing until it worked. And also better control of speed. Still a fair start and quite a change from the Airbus at least in which button to press but much easier to manual control as it is so agile.

Same issue here. Flying an ILS approach, APPR mode, plane just keeps getting lower and lower below GS. Have to take over to prevent landing short. Seems the AP still needs work, but getting much more flyable with each update.

AP seemed only seemed to manage horizontal direction nothing on glidescope. Am very used to the A320 so know that flies the full ILS/glidescope no problem. BUT I have not pressed the right button(s) - but on A320 you just need to press approach. Did have the magenta diamonds so the plain certainly picked up the ILS.

Interesting. I just flew into KACY on the RNAV 31 and got no magenta diamonds. I got the little areas where they should be but they never appeared.

Thank you! This was most helpful. So... I was able to do an ILS approach into KSMF as I described. It worked fine. I did it by mimicking you're selection of the NAV swap active - standby frequencies button when I was ready to activate approach mode, which altered my PDF to display the ILS vector and the ILS data info rather than the FMS1 stuff. That is not how I was trying to do this.

Regardless, it worked. Not the behavior I expected from that button. I'm not even sure where the 'Standby Nav Frequency' is set or displayed. The NAV SRC did not change.. it was still FMS. So, I don't know how and why this worked, but it worked. And now I can go about my business of flying ILS approaches when I wish. Thanks!

Ah... yes...that tooltip is wrong. That button changes the active NAV source, not the standby frequency swap. Reminds me we need to get that tooltip changed.... I do not believe there is a standby nav freq in the PL21. It is just set directly on the TUN page of the FMS. Also it is worth pointing out that the correct ILS frequency does not ALWAYS load automatically because the in-sim database sometimes doesn't have the frequency in the database, so while it works most times, it's always good to double check in the TUN page as part of your arrival briefing to be sure you've got the ILS freq tuned...

Before the flight I checked the ILS frequency was in the TUN and I guess that was why I had the magenta diamonds but the plane did not follow the glideslope down as the A320 did. However, there seems to be some discussion here about another button to press in addition to Aprch to get the plane to fly the slope. Not clear which button that is exactly.

Did you check out the videos I shared of doing ILS approaches above in this thread? I ask because the ILS indicators on the PFD are green, not Magenta. Leads me to believe there's something amiss...

Pretty sure if the diamond is magenta you must have selected an RNAV approach!

I find the only way to get a stable descent is using VS mode. What I do, is first select VS mode. Then adjust altitude, then program in rate of descent. Sim brief will program in your TOD, so I follow that and usually start out 2000FPM and then adjust. Just got a whole lot easier with the banana indicator now.

Am I missing something to get the glide slope balls during an RNAV (GPS) approach with LPV mins?  Or is this not modeled yet? OR maybe its Asobo's deal?

Approach is RNAV RWY 10R KFCM

By default RNAV approaches aren't annunciated on the PFD yet. The AP will fly the LPV GS but you get no indication so you can't hand fly it.

RVAV vertical guidance will be deployed with VNAV in the near future. Probably 2-3 weeks.
