Copyright problem with Disney ??

Featured Replies

A few months ago (08/30), I flew around Disney World in Orlando, Florida. At this time, I still had my GTX 1060 so I was flying in medium display mode. It was working fine but the level of details was not always optimal. At this time, here is the view I had from Disney World and especially the sphere at Epcot Center:

Disney World and Epcot in MEDIUM

Now that I have my brand new RTX 3070, I discover the world again in ULTRA mode now, it is so great !! But as I flew to Disney World again today, I was disappointed to see all the main buildings have disappeared and the scenery is poor:

Same place in ULTRA (November)

Is it because the buildings are not defined the same way in medium and ultra?
Or is it because many patches were released since August and one of them removed Disney World? A copyright reason?

Thanks,
Eric

Did Photogrammatry get turned off on the Data page of the options by mistake?  Perhaps you had an internet disconnect during flight which can cause the sim to turn it off? Check your settings.

Yeah double check that your photogrammetry is enabled, and you're connected to the servers.

The main difference in buildings between medium and ultra is the building LOD.  Close buildings will look almost identical but middle distance and further buildings can disappear in medium settings.

The shot is not about middle distance. This is definately a case of photogrammetry being switched off.

Thank you all for your helpful tips.

I had a look at my settings: photogrammetry was ON but the option was grayed out, so I am not really sure it was on in fact... But "Bing data world graphics" was OFF. Turning it on, the photogrammetry option is not grayed any more and I confirm it is ON.
I will test again with these settings and let you know.

That should fix it Eric. 👍

So you thought it look good in Ultra with Bing OFF? Well now that you turned it on, you'r in for a treat my friend 🙂

Indeed, it works much better, it is beautiful, as shown on this image of Disney World:

Disney World with Photogrammetry

It brings much more detailed data for visual, the problem is that it may bring too much... It also brings strange artifacts that I wouldn't like to see. For example, see what I saw when lining up at Kissimmee airport:

Artifacts at Kissimmee airport

I guess these are trees, but they don't look so nice... Same here on this big boulevard, it looks very real (I have been there several times) but the trees on the borders that look like columns or statues, they are probably designed to be seen from a higher altitude:

Boulevard with trees

In fact, I flew in that area because a friend of mine lives there, in Celebration, Florida, and I wanted to show him his home from the sim.
Without the photogrammetry, I made this screenshot that really looks like the real area:

Area without photogrammetry

With the detailed buildings and photogrammetry turned on, it looks very different from the real thing, way too much houses and trees and the streets are almost not visible any more:

Area with photogrammetry

So I think it is a matter of compromise, to choose the right settings.

I am sure Bing was ON before, it was probably turned off when I switched to Ultra without looking at the settings in details 🙂

I wonder what is the impact of the abominable Freedom (or rather the lack thereof...) of Panorama laws prevalent in a lot of countries in Europe.

It is a bit of a double edged sword unfortunately.  I have my Disney like that (been on most of those rides, the big kid that I am!) but the melted chocolate houses and monolith trees can be disappointing.

Sometimes I see both decent photogrammetry of the larger buildings, and decent 'auto generated' houses and trees, and sometimes it seems to change between the two.  I haven't found the reason for this yet, but for instance, after touring all of the parks (Disney, Sea World, Universal etc.) in all of their photogrammetric beauty, I also landed at Kissimmee, but I don't remember seeing the trees and houses like that.  I need to go back again over the weekend to take a look.  If my trees and houses look different (decent), I will check my settings and get back to you.

Certainly in the Canary Islands last night, the hotels I recognised were done well, even to the level of the little 'Paradise Island' cocktail bars in the middle of the large swimming pools, and then the local small houses (I presume auto-generated) looked good also (down to the detail of air-con units etc.), so I am not sure what is going on sometimes.

So maybe it is an issue we need to discuss and get a handle on.  The sim still holds quite a few mystery's for me - sometimes I am not sure what is a bug and what is a feature! 😄

This is exactly what I was thinking about when I wrote the title of this post. In addition of aviation, photography is also one of my hobbies. I know that photographers are not allowed to publish pictures of existing buildings without an authorization of the architect, or 75 years after his death if he is dead. This is crazy, Europe is going mad with regulations on top of regulations...

The US is worse for IP .

Ever notice how there seem to be a lot less WWII US model aircraft than in the past and way less toys based on them ? It is because Lockheed etc are hitting up toy makers and model makers for huge licencing fees - even though those WWII Dauntless and Wildcats and Hellcats and Lightnings were basically designed and built using US taxpayer money. Same for the Sherman tank. Want to make a toy that kind of looks a bit like a Sherman? Pay Ford a small fortune for every toy you sell.

You found the perfect exact words: this is double edged sword. I also liked your words about "melted chocolate houses" and "monolith trees", absolutely exact 🙂

If you want to test what I saw at Kissimmee, I was lining up on runway 33, not at the beginning of the runway.

Anyway, I confirm what you say. Like you flew in Canary Islands, I flew above Paris with all detailed buildings and it is absolutely wonderful. Sometimes an auto-generated building is positioned on the middle of a road, but globally it works well and the visuals are stunning. I may share some screenshots of Paris if you wish.
