Rolling Cache size

Featured Replies

The reason I do not use the rolling cache is that if you happen to fly over an area you frequently fly at times of extreme server demand it's likely you will receive reduced or incomplete data. And then that's what you are stuck with forever more.

Basic computer rules don’t Bert. An SSD has a finite number of writes. Are you really going to notice any difference in performance by using the HDD? And how frustrating would it be to lose an SSD because of the pagefile?

Ray I have used a 500Gb SSD for page file writes for over 6 years now and it's still functioning normally, all SMART values are fine, etc.  Presumably the total address locations have diminished some, but hardly visible.

I had to scroll back to remind myself of this conversation. Yes, I’ve had an SSD in another computer for 6 years but the software on it is stable and pretty much read-only.

There are other reasons why I’m in no hurry to buy MSFS this being one of the less important reasons. Enough said on that I think.

PAGE FILE WRITES for over 6 years Ray.  IOW, this concern of yours really is much ado about almost nothing!  But you seem bent on seeing things the way to do so best wishes to you.

It's nothing to do with PAGE FILE WRITES Noel.

I think  any memory addresses not functioning well because of pagefile overusage would simply be passed over (the memory addresse themselves, only) regarding any future use and this tiny area of void would not disable the SSD whatsoever

OK, what's it have to do with?

That is certainly my sense as well.  I haven't a clue what Ray is basing his concern on hopefully he will give us some more clues.

Hi folks,

I have MSFS installed pretty much on its own on a 2TB SSD - is there any tangible benefit for manually allocating a large Rolling cache size within MSFS settings (say 1TB for example).

Cheers

Side note:

I'm NVME all the way.   I have two 1gb NVME drives in my system,   and I keep one SSD in a USB enclosure for backup purposes.

The only thing I'd do with a mechanical hard drive is use it for target practice.   One less cable in my PC makes me a happy man.  I don't want to see any SATA cables, or any SATA power cables.

Thank science that the IDE ribbon cables are dead. They were just an ugly airflow obstruction. (yeah I'm old.  And IDE cables made me hate visible cables in pc's)

Although I do keep my old 10,000 rpm WD Raptor around,  for sentimental purposes.  Can't bring myself to smash it.

Edit:  I adopted SSD drives when they were released.   At least 3 or 4 of my old SATA drives were OS drives in my systems,  and they are now still in service as OS drives for my Brother,  and 2 Nephews.

If you have a good connection, I see no sense in using the rolling cache and have disabled it since launch.

I wasn’t going to give my reasons why I won’t be buying MSFS but since you ask...

1) No control over the version I use with forced updates.

2) I still consider MSFS to be in beta given the frequency and size of updates.

3) Third party weather programs not given access.

4) No historical weather service.

And finally, there will probably never be a quality Concorde in that sim.

P3D gives me all I want.

Ray we're definitely not on the same page!  I was only wondering why you were concerned about using an SSD for a page file these days 🙃

I’m not Noel. I don’t give it a second thought. I raised the issue a few months ago as I remember the advice given when SSDs first became available.
